Chapter 4

Author: Fickle
When it came to spending the night with the King, I had already prepared myself for what might happen, yet I was still nervous. So, I lit a candle, hoping it would calm my nerves.

To my surprise, Alexander did nothing at all; he simply slept by my side. He slept deeply and peacefully.

I let out a sigh of relief. A matter like this was best delayed for as long as possible.

When I woke up early the next morning, Alexander was already fully dressed, and I quickly rose to help him put on his crown.

"I slept well last night. I will return to your bedchambers tonight," Alexander said to me.

I nodded, smoothing out the folds of his robes. "Shall I have dinner prepared, Your Majesty?"

"There is no need." Alexander waved his hand. "I have important matters to attend to in the evening, so I'll only come over to sleep."

For fifteen consecutive nights, Alexander slept in my bedchambers. Wild rumors about me began spreading throughout the court, claiming that the tyrannical King had changed his ways. They said he had taken a new beauty, whom he hadn't beaten to death, but instead doted on endlessly, favoring her night after night.

To all this, I simply wished to clarify: we really were just sleeping, and nothing more. Yet in the eyes of outsiders, I remained deeply favored. Because of my presence, Alexander had hardly scolded or beaten anyone recently.

And thanks to his favor, I could stroll freely through the castle grounds. What I never expected, however, was running into Arthur. My maid had returned to the castle quarters to fetch my cloak, so for a moment, it was just the two of us, staring at each other.

I turned on my heel, intending to walk away. However, Arthur stepped forward and grabbed my wrist.

"Claire, why are you here? How could you hide this from me? Didn't we agree that you'd wait for me to marry you?"

I shook off his grip and finally got a clear look at his face. He looked considerably gaunt and worn down recently.

"Your Lordship, where are your manners?" I glared at him with disgust. "I am now a Baroness who serves His Majesty. If you keep tugging at me like this, you might not care about your reputation, but I do!"

"You were supposed to be my wife!" Arthur grew emotional.

I thought the man was out of his mind. "Lord Stevenson, please conduct yourself with respect!"

Arthur's face turned pale. "I went to propose to you that day, only for your father to tell me you had entered the castle! Claire, why didn't you tell me? All I did was teach you a small lesson that day. Did you really have to punish me like this?"

"And what kind of lesson did you teach Lady Fletcher, Lord Stevenson?"

Alexander's voice suddenly rang out. I turned around and saw him approaching, accompanied by another nobleman and two attendants.

I quickly created a distance between myself and Arthur. "Your Majesty."

Arthur bowed his head as well. "Your Majesty."

Then, he nodded toward the nobleman behind Alexander. "Good day, Lord Commander Reed."

"Good day, Lord Stevenson." The Lord Commander, Cedric Reed, nodded back to Arthur.

So he was Cedric Reed. I couldn't help but look up and steal a glance at him—the legendary war hero who had subdued the northern frontiers at the age of seventeen. He was the god of war of our kingdom, yet why did he look so fair and refined?

"I heard Lord Stevenson speak of teaching Lady Fletcher a lesson?" Alexander spoke in a casual, indifferent tone. "You sure have the guts to command my woman!"

Although Alexander's tone remained calm, Arthur was terrified enough to drop to his knees. "No, Your Majesty. I was merely joking with Her Highness. I beg Your Majesty's forgiveness."

Alexander looked at me, then looked at Arthur, and suddenly chuckled.

"Lady Fletcher has served me for some time now. It is time to raise her status, lest someone decide to casually ‘teach' her a lesson again." Alexander turned his gaze and spoke to the young attendant beside him. "From now on, Lady Claire Fletcher shall be bestowed with the title of a Duchess."

"My future is bright and full of promise. Men are nothing more than decorations in my life. Why on earth would I choose you? You severed whatever fate or bond existed between us the day of that royal physician selection!"Before that day, if you had taken the time to speak with me for even a moment, you would have known that if I failed to become a royal physician, Father would send me into the castle!"As I spoke, Arthur's face gradually grew paler. In the end, he just stood there quietly and stared blankly at me.I waited for a moment, but with my patience gone, I turned around and walked back into the castle. Her Majesty was still waiting to consult with me on state affairs; I truly had no time to waste here with him.… Three years later, during the early morning court session, I looked up at Alexander, who sat upon the throne. Over the past three years, she had abolished political forced marriages, established schools for women, and pushed for higher education to be open to

I watched as Cedric stared at Alexander's back for a moment before he suddenly raised his sword to his heart, and blood splattered across the floor. I gasped and tried to rush forward, but Alexander reached out an arm to stop me.Only when the last of Cedric's blood had drained away did Alexander finally speak. "Lord Commander Cedric raised an army to force a coup and committed treason against the kingdom. Taking his own life does not erase his sins."She turned back toward the throne calmly, the hem of her robes sweeping across the floor. "I command that Cedric's body be displayed in the public square for three days as a public warning, to proclaim to the world his crime of treason. As for the Reed family… they shall be spared the death penalty but stripped of all titles, stripped of their official positions, and exiled to the frontier. They are never to return to the capital for the rest of their lives."My head snapped up, and my heart skipped a beat. Three days of public display

As time passed, I slowly got the hang of handling state affairs. Sometimes, when Alexander wasn't feeling well, I could handle some of the less critical official reports on her behalf and read the results back to her.Meanwhile, the arguments between Cedric and Alexander grew more and more frequent. The final straw came when Alexander told Cedric never to see her again.Cedric froze for a moment before flicking his sleeves in anger and storming off.I stepped out from behind the curtain and let out a sigh. "You two should have talked things through."Perhaps owing to the sensitivity that comes with pregnancy, Alexander shed a tear. She stared at Cedric's retreating back and ultimately let out a soft chuckle. "Claire, would you believe me when I say he's going to stage a rebellion?"I believed her. Because on the very day I was officially crowned Queen, Cedric marched on the castle with his troops and surrounded the entire royal complex. Three of us stood in the vast castle hall

Alexander was silent for a moment, a trace of weariness on her face, before she said, "Claire… I'm pregnant."Lately, I felt like I was being hit by one revelation after another, each bigger and more shocking than the last."Is it… Cedric's?" I looked at Alexander cautiously.Alexander gently touched her still-flat stomach. "I've been taking medication to suppress my femininity since I was a child, so I thought I'd never be able to have a child. I never expected this child to arrive so unexpectedly.""Does… Lord Commander Cedric know?" I asked suddenly.Alexander fell silent and finally shook her head. She looked at me and said, "I will have this child recognized as yours; from now on, she will be your child. Are you willing to do that?"I nodded without the slightest hesitation. As a physician, no one understood better than I did the immense risks involved in childbirth.Alexander patted my shoulder. "I'm putting you through a lot, Claire.""It is my honor, Your Majesty," I sa

She stared at the plate of desserts, lost in thought. "My mom used to make this for me all the time, long ago."I had figured that "mom" meant mother in her strange phrasing, but not knowing what to say, I could only stand quietly by her side.Alexander picked up the dessert before asking softly, "Do you want to know how I, a woman, managed to ascend the throne?"After a brief hesitation, I replied, "Your Majesty, I would be honored to hear it."Alexander looked down, and her thoughts drifted back to many years ago."The late King had great difficulty producing an heir. He fathered more than a dozen daughters, but not a single prince. As you know, the fate of princesses in our kingdom is rarely kind. Every one of his daughters was sent away into political marriages."My mother, Lady Diana, refused to accept such a fate for me. So, she lied and declared that I was born a boy. Her logic was simple. She assumed that with enough time, the King would eventually have a son. But to her

That was when Alexander woke up.The nearby lamp flickered faintly, but it was still enough for us to see each other's faces and the blood on my hand clearly."Your Majesty… Y-You're a woman?" My voice trembled.Seeing the grim expression on Alexander's face, I dropped to my knees immediately. "Forgive me, Your Majesty! I did not mean to discover this!"Alexander remained silent for a long moment, rubbing her temples in resignation. "Get up. I do not blame you."I raised my eyes timidly, and in that instant, every doubt I had previously harbored found its answer. Now I knew why Alexander was kept her royal household empty and why she had never allowed me to take her pulse.Even the rumors of those highborn noble ladies suddenly dying turned out to be nothing more than a cover-up to hide the truth that Alexander was a woman. How could the ruler of our kingdom be a woman?I was overwhelmed by sheer terror yet deeply bewildered."Go and have the servants prepare a bath for me.
