Kim Pov.

I’m not trembling.

That’s the first thing I notice when I step into Dr. Derrin’s office.

I’m not gripping my sleeves like a lifeline. I’m not scanning the room for exits or flinching at the sound of the door clicking shut behind me. My breath is steady. My chest doesn’t feel tight.

This time, when I sit on the couch, I sit because I want to, not because I’m trying to be good or obedient or invisible.

I sit because I belong here. Because I want to talk.

“Hello, Kim,” Dr. Derrin sa

Erik – POVThe door clicks shut behind me, but it feels like I’ve stepped into another world. The lights are soft. The air smells faintly of vanilla and something warm, familiar—her. The house is quiet, but not in a cold way. It feels... lived in. Safe. And mine. And hers.I kick off my shoes, shrug off my coat, and rake a hand through my hair.My chest is still tight. The whole damn day I walked around with her kiss burned into my cheek like a brand, every thought circling back to her. To the way her lips lingered. To the way she looked at me before doing it, like she wanted me to feel it.And now I’m home. And she’s here.I catch sight of her in the kitchen, wiping down the counter, wearing one of my hoodies again—too big on her, sleeves falling over her hands, her hair in a loose braid down her back. She looks up when she hears me, and her face lights up. God, that look.“Hey,” she says softly. “You’re back.”

  • Where fear ends   Chapter 41

Erik PovI closed the door behind me with more force than necessary, the soft click of the lock far too gentle to match the chaos in my chest. What the hell just happened? It wasn’t the kiss on the cheek—that had happened once before. But this time… it was something else. Something deeper. Slower. Like she meant it. Like she didn’t want to let go.And God help me, I didn’t want her to.I walked to the car on autopilot, hands clenched into fists as if I needed to physically hold back the storm brewing inside me. The air was cold, but I felt too warm. Too aware of my own skin. Her scent still lingered faintly on my collar—something soft and clean, like wildflowers and morning.I slid into the driver’s seat and sat there for a moment, gripping the steering wheel hard. Breathe, I told myself. Just breathe. But it was already too late. The memory of her lips on my skin was branded into me. Gentle. Hesitant. But fille

  • Where fear ends   Chapter 40

Kim Pov.God knows what got into me after I finished breakfast.Maybe it was the way he smiled when I told him I liked watching him cook. Or the way he looked at me when I said I wanted to study Child Protection—as if I’d just told him I wanted to save the world.Or maybe it was just the soft, slow warmth blooming in my chest every time he was near. After we ate, Erik went to change into his detective clothes. I stayed behind to wash the dishes, humming quietly to myself while warm water ran over my fingers. I was smiling for no reason. When he came back, he looked so... official. His white shirt fit a little too well over his chest and arms, the collar open just enough to show a hint of the strength beneath. His gun holster hung over one shoulder, and I couldn't stop staring.“I’m heading out,” he said, adjusting the cuffs of his sleeves.I turned to him, wiping my hands on the towel. “Be careful today.”He gav

  • Where fear ends   Chapter 39

Kim Pov.The morning after his birthday felt... different. Maybe it was because of the kiss I gave him on the cheek last night—or maybe it was the way he looked at me afterward. Like I had given him something precious. When I woke up, the smell of fresh coffee and toasted bread wrapped around me like a soft blanket. For a moment, I stayed in bed, letting the warmth of the morning sink into my chest before slipping quietly out of the room.Erik was already in the kitchen, his back turned toward me. He wore a soft grey t-shirt and sweatpants, and even in something so casual, he looked... I don’t know. Solid. Safe. Like home.I smiled, leaning against the doorframe, just watching him for a second. He was setting the table with a tenderness that didn’t match his large hands or the seriousness he carried most days.“Good morning,” I said, my voice still a little husky from sleep. He turned, smiling softly. “Morning. Breakfast is ready in two minutes.”“I could’ve made it…” I started, then

  • Where fear ends   Chapter 38

Kim Pov. Erik's birthday is today, and he still went to work, like it was any other Thursday. Typical Erik. I asked him yesterday if he wanted to celebrate, and he just shrugged and smiled like always. “Not really a fan of birthdays,” he’d said. But that didn’t stop me. Maja showed up a little after noon with a bag of groceries and a big grin. “He’s going to love it,” she said, waving a bunch of parsley like a flag of victory. We made a plan. We'd cook his favorite dishes—chicken with rosemary, mashed sweet potatoes, and the chocolate mousse he once told me he dreamed about after a hospital fundraiser. I didn't even know you could dream about mousse, but Erik could. That’s just the kind of man he is—quiet, strong, and a little strange in the sweetest way. While Maja chopped vegetables with practiced ease, I focused on the marinade. The kitchen smelled of garlic, herbs, and warmth. She kept teasing me the entire time. “I’m curious,” she said, licking some mousse off her spoon and

Erik Pov. I haven’t moved since she left the office. Not really. I’m still leaning against the wall, one hand on the edge of my desk, heart thundering in my chest like I just ran a damn marathon. I don’t think I even blinked for a full minute after she closed the door behind her. The echo of her presence is still here—sweet and warm, with the faint scent of her shampoo lingering in the air. What the hell just happened? She walked in like she owned every breath I had. And the moment I saw her—eyes wide, cheeks flushed, her gaze dipping down my arms like she was memorizing me—I knew. She’s starting to feel desire. And not in the abstract way she and Maja have been whispering about. No, this wasn’t curiosity. It wasn’t theory. It was physical. Real. I saw it in the way she shifted on her feet. The way her breath caught when our hands touched. The way she looked at me like I was something she didn’t fully understand but wanted anyway. And damn me—I wanted her too. Not just emotion
