Chapter 23

Author: Windie
“Felix!”

Pinned beneath him, Wendy looked up in shock.

His face was inches from hers, contorted with agony, while flames danced across his back.

She could even smell his burning flesh.

Emergency responders rushed over and quickly extinguished the flames with a fire extinguisher.

Felix's back was badly charred, the burns horrific.

The pain was so intense he nearly passed out.

But he forced himself to stay conscious.

The first thing he did was grab Wendy's arm and anxiously look her over.

  • Where the Wind Takes Her   Chapter 30

A few days later, a German polar research expedition ventured off its planned route and accidentally discovered Felix, almost completely buried beneath the snow and ice.Miraculously, he still showed faint signs of life. The expedition team immediately administered emergency aid and transported him to the best hospital in Reykjavik. After dozens of hours of intensive treatment, Felix miraculously survived. But the damage was devastating.Prolonged exposure to the extreme cold had caused severe frostbite, particularly in his legs. Large areas of tissue had died.Although the doctors managed to save his life, the injuries left him permanently disabled. He would likely need a wheelchair for the rest of his life.A private medical flight brought him back to Harbour City, where he was admitted to the city's most prestigious private hospital and given the finest medical care available. His life had been saved. But the Felix Foster who'd once wielded enormous power throughout Harbou

Her voice was calm, without anger, resentment, or even the slightest hint of emotion.Yet every word cut deeper than any blade.“Felix Foster, just look at yourself.”She paused.“It's pathetic. And ridiculous.”Then her red lips parted, delivering the words that would destroy what little hope he had left.“Falling in love with you was the biggest humiliation of my life.”Her voice turned firm, leaving no room for argument.“Please stay out of my life. Forever.”With that, she turned away without sparing him another glance. She reached for Leo's arm and leaned gently against him.Leo slipped an arm around her waist and cast one last cold look at Felix, who remained kneeling in the snow, looking as though every last bit of life had drained from him. Then he guided Wendy toward the warmly lit glass cabin.Wendy never looked back.Felix remained motionless in the freezing snow, like a statue abandoned to the elements. He watched the two figures in matching white coats disap

In the end, Felix resorted to shady connections and paid an enormous price to uncover Wendy and Leo's itinerary. They'd arrived in Iceland aboard a private jet and checked into an extremely secluded, luxurious glass-dome hotel near Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in southern Iceland.Felix immediately rented an SUV.He didn't even bother getting proper winter clothing.Still wearing his thin suit, he drove straight into the brutal Icelandic winter, desperate to reach them.Outside his windows, a blizzard raged.Visibility was terrible, and the roads were dangerously slippery.Felix floored the accelerator. The SUV skidded across the icy road, threatening to spin out of control, but he didn't care.Only one thought filled his mind.Catch up to her. Stop her. After several grueling hours of driving, during which he nearly crashed more than once, he finally reached the remote hotel after dark. The property consisted of several separate glass-domed cabins scattered across the wilder

Felix remained frozen where he was, like a broken doll abandoned in the middle of nowhere. He watched helplessly as Wendy walked away with another man, her arm linked through his.The ring on her finger glittered painfully beneath the lights.Around him, guests whispered and snickered.Suddenly, Felix coughed up a mouthful of blood. It splattered across the polished floor, leaving a vivid crimson stain. His vision went black. He lost consciousness and collapsed heavily to the ground. The last things he heard were startled cries and the frantic footsteps of people rushing toward him.And the final, cruelest image burned into his mind was Wendy walking away without looking back. After collapsing and coughing up blood at the Paris jewelry exhibition, Felix was rushed to the hospital.Doctors attributed his condition to extreme emotional distress, aggravated by injuries that hadn't fully healed, and ordered him to rest. But Felix stayed in the hospital for only one day. Then h

The color drained from Felix's face. His hand froze in midair, still holding the ring, and his eyes filled with disbelief and panic.“Wendy, I'm not putting on an act. I mean it. I love you.”“You mean it?”Wendy cut him off, her smile growing even colder. She slowly bent down and leaned close to his ear. When she spoke, her voice was barely loud enough for him to hear, but every word was painfully clear.“Then tell me something, Felix. Back when you staged that rescue to trick me into marrying you, when you turned me into a target so you could protect your precious Grace, did you tell yourself you were doing it out of love, too?”Felix went rigid. The words hit him like a bolt of lightning. His pupils contracted, and he stared at her in horror. He opened his mouth, but nothing came out.Panic and regret crashed over him, leaving him utterly speechless.Wendy straightened. This time, she raised her voice so everyone around them could hear.“But there's one very important

In the days that followed, Felix began the long, difficult process of making amends.First, he committed to regular, long-term therapy with a leading psychologist, determined to understand his own flaws, the roots of his need for control, and what it truly meant to love someone in a healthy way.He was no longer the arrogant head of the Foster family who believed everything could be controlled through rules. He worked hard to set aside his pride, to understand Wendy, and to accept her for who she was.He stopped interfering with her career.Instead, he used every resource at his disposal to clear obstacles from her path and support her ambitions. He never asked for recognition or credit. He simply stayed quietly in the background, hoping to become someone she could always rely on.He accompanied her on adventures she'd once dreamed of but he'd forbidden, including bungee jumping.Standing at the edge of the platform, his face pale with fear, he held her hand tightly as they ju
