Chapter 2

مؤلف: Hawthorne
Memories surged around me like a tide, carrying the stale smell of dust from the basement.

When I was five or six, I truly did hate my sister.

If there was one piece of candy in the house, it belonged to her. If there was one apple, it was cut in two, with the larger half for Celia and the smaller half for me. She always received new clothes first. I wore whatever she outgrew. Even the bedtime stories belonged to her.

Mom had a beautiful, gentle voice. She told Celia stories about the Moon Goddess and the First Wolf, about our ancestors crossing frozen plains, and about magical creatures beneath the stars. But she told those stories only to my sister.

I often crouched outside the bedroom and watched through the crack in the door as Mom sat beside Celia's bed.

"What would you like to hear tonight?"

"The story about the Moon Goddess leading the lost wolf home."

Mom would open the picture book, her voice flowing like a stream through a midnight forest. I sat outside with my arms around my knees, listening to every beautiful word while something tightened painfully around my heart.

Why couldn't she read to me too?

One summer, when I was seven, the pack's hunting party delivered a cut of fresh venison. Mom made a large pot of stew and placed the two tenderest pieces of meat in Celia's bowl.

"Eat more, Celia. The priest says you're too weak. You need all the nourishment you can get."

I looked down at the broth and a few pieces of carrot in my own bowl. Tears suddenly began to fall.

"Why does she get both pieces? I want some too!"

Dad slammed his silverware against the table. "Wren Calder, how can you be so selfish? Don't you know your sister is sick? Don't you know she only has..."

He could not finish.

At that age, I did not understand what the countdown meant. I only knew Celia was always pale and could not run as far as the other young wolves. I knew our parents looked at her with a grief that frightened me.

"Why does she get everything?" I screamed, leaping from my chair and pointing at her. "Why don't you just die? Give me back everything you took from me!"

Tears spilled from Celia's eyes and struck her bowl. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out.

Mom sprang to her feet and slapped me. It was the hardest anyone had ever hit me. Celia tried to rush over and protect me, but Mom held her back.

"She needs to learn," Mom shouted through reddened eyes. "She needs to learn what she is and is not allowed to say."

The next day, I hid outside the kitchen and overheard my parents speaking in low voices.

"Nine years left," Mom sobbed.

"I know," Dad said hoarsely.

"Only nine years."

That was when I learned my sister would truly die.

When she was born, the pack priest declared that the Calder family owed the Moon Goddess one life. From that day forward, black numbers visible only to her closest blood relatives floated above Celia's head. They would reach zero at dawn on her sixteenth birthday. Everyone assumed the Goddess would take her.

In the present, our parents led Celia back to her bedroom, both of them red-eyed. I floated behind them, my heart aching.

After Dad closed her door, he glanced toward the basement.

"Maybe we should let Wren out," he murmured.

Mom was silent for a long time. "Let her endure it for one more night. At least Celia can spend her final hours in peace. It's only one night."

She wiped her tears away.

"Wren will understand. When Celia is gone, we'll make everything up to her."

Dad said nothing. He went into the kitchen, took a cold meat pie from the cupboard, and headed toward the basement.

Grandma carried my ashes onto a bus bound for the northern edge of the territory.I floated beside her and watched the city retreat beyond the window. Tall buildings gave way to low houses, and then to unbroken forest and mountains dusted with snow.Grandma never loosened her hold on the urn. Her aged face was reflected in the glass, and bottomless grief seemed to live in every line around her eyes.It was dark when we reached the cabin where she lived alone. No other house stood nearby. There was only the whisper of wind moving through the pines.Grandma lit the fireplace and placed a lamp on the table. Its warm golden glow filled the room. She set my urn beside the hearth, then arranged a laurel branch and a white candle beside it.When everything was ready, she stood before the table in silence. Then she slowly turned toward me."Wren."I froze."Grandma," I answered instinctively before remembering I was dead. The living could not hear me.But she nodded."I can see you."My tears

My funeral was simple.Grandma went into town and bought me a pale pink dress. The fabric was soft, and tiny white winter flowers were embroidered around the collar. I had never worn anything so beautiful while I was alive.Grandma dressed me herself, moving slowly and gently.Mom tried to help, but Grandma barred her from the room."You don't deserve to touch her."Mom stood outside with a hand over her mouth, crying but no longer daring to enter.According to pack tradition, our dead were returned to the Moon beneath the night sky. My body was placed in a small birchwood casket with a laurel branch on my chest. The lid remained open so the family could say goodbye.Dad knelt beside it for an entire day. He stroked the edge of the casket again and again."I was wrong," he kept whispering. "Wake up, Wren. If you wake up, I'll open the door."Celia sat curled in a corner, her eyes swollen. Since my body had been found, she had barely spoken. She only stared into the casket as if waiting

Members of the pack began arriving for Celia's First Moon Rite. They carried flowers, gifts, and blessings for her, but the moment they entered our living room, they smelled death.Mrs. Harper from next door was the first to notice the body in Grandma's arms."Moon Goddess," she whispered, covering her mouth. "She couldn't make it after all? Celia had only just turned sixteen.""It isn't Celia," Grandma said.Mrs. Harper stared. She took two steps closer and finally saw my face."Wren?" Her voice shot upward. "How can it be Wren? Celia was the one with the countdown."The living room fell silent.Every eye turned to my sister. Nothing floated above her head now, but her living wolf spirit was unmistakable. The elderly pack priest among the guests closed his eyes and searched the currents of magic that remained in the house."The debt has been paid," he said solemnly. "The prophecy said the Moon Goddess would take one daughter of the Calder family when Celia turned sixteen. We assumed t

The pack healer arrived soon afterward. He examined me for only a few minutes before confirming that I had died before midnight."Wolfsbane poisoning," he said, studying the black wound on my arm. "She had not completed her first shift, so her body could not break down the toxin. If she had received antiserum when the fever began, she would have survived."Mom collapsed when she heard him. Dad behaved as though he had heard nothing. He lifted me from the cold basement and carried me into the living room.Celia woke around noon.Mom sat beside her bed with swollen eyes, clutching her hand."It's all right, Celia," she repeated. "You're alive. You really survived."Celia stared at the ceiling for a long time."Where is my sister?" she asked quietly.Mom's tears struck the back of her hand. "Wren..."She could not finish.Celia sat up and threw back the blankets."Don't move," Mom said, trying to hold her down. "You fainted. You need to rest.""Where is Wren?" Celia's voice rose into a sh

"Wrong about what?" Mom released Celia's hand and stepped toward the threshold.Dad raised an arm to stop her."Wait."His voice was barely a breath, as if he feared waking someone. With the morning light behind him, I could not see his face. I saw only the trembling of his shoulders as he stared at the small body curled in the corner.Celia peered past Mom, her face turning even paler."Wren?" she called carefully. "Can you hear me? The curse is gone. I'm not going to die. We can stay together now."My body did not move. There was no breath and no heartbeat of a young wolf.Mom's smile slowly froze. She moved around Dad and entered the room one uncertain step at a time. Then she crouched beside me."Wren?"She touched my shoulder and gave it a gentle shake. My body rolled limply toward her. My eyes were closed. My lips were blue. The wound on my arm was completely black."Wren?"Her voice rose as she pressed a palm to my cheek.Cold. Rigid. Empty of life. She jerked her hand away as i

The color drained from Mom's face."She's doing homework in her room." She avoided Grandma's eyes and fussed with the silver ribbons on the table.Grandma said nothing. She only watched her."Homework? I'll go see her.""Mom!"Mom hurried to stop her. "Wren was throwing a tantrum. I was afraid she'd upset Celia, so I put her in the basement storage room to think about her behavior."Grandma stopped moving."You did what?" she asked, each word distinct. "You locked Wren in the basement?""She kept claiming she was sick and pounding on the door. She knew tonight was Celia's last..."Mom's voice dwindled until even she could no longer defend herself.Grandma's expression darkened. She rose so quickly that she swayed. When Mom reached to steady her, she shoved the hand away."Laura! Wren is your daughter too. I know Celia has suffered. She was born carrying that damned Moon-Debt Curse, and you have spent sixteen years fearing you would lose her. You wanted to place every good thing in the
