Chapter 3

Author: Goldie Lane
A passing nurse finally noticed the blood.

"Oh my God, she's hemorrhaging! Get a gurney!"

Within minutes, I was in the ER, curled against wave after wave of pain. Whatever pride I had left disappeared with it. I grabbed a nurse's hand and begged her through my tears.

"Please save my baby. Please."

She looked almost as panicked as I felt. "We're trying, but all the doctors were called away for Mrs. Stone's prenatal appointment."

I was shaking so badly my teeth nearly chattered, sweat streaming down my face as I waited. I had no idea how much time passed before a doctor finally rushed in.

His expression changed the moment he examined me.

"She's lost too much blood. The pregnancy can't be saved." He immediately turned to the nurses. "Get her ready for a D&C. Where's her family? We need consent."

"We called every emergency contact she listed," one of the nurses said quietly. "They hung up."

Even through the haze of pain, I heard her.

Of course they had.

My eyes filled with tears, but there wasn't even time to cry. Everything was happening too fast for anesthesia, and when the cold instruments entered my body, I bit down on my lip until I tasted blood.

Somewhere outside the room, people were laughing.

Then Jasmine's voice floated through the door, soft and playful.

"Doctor, can you tell yet? Is it a boy or a girl?"

Yuri gave a low laugh. "I hope it's a girl. I want her to look like you."

A tear slipped into my ear as I stared at the ceiling, trembling on the table.

There had been a time when I couldn't have imagined Yuri saying something like that to another woman.

Yuri and I had known each other since we were kids. Everyone around us had taken it for granted that Yuri Stone and Quinn Xavier would eventually get married, and I'd never questioned it either. As far as I was concerned, there had never been anyone else.

When Yuri decided to start a company after we got married, we put every penny we had into a tiny studio. I hustled for publicity, chased potential investors, and sat through business dinners drinking until I could barely stand if that was what it took to get someone interested.

Seeing me come home drunk after one of those nights had reduced Yuri to tears.

"Quinn, I swear, someday you'll never have to struggle like this again."

And eventually, we made it.

His company grew beyond anything we'd imagined. Around the same time, I got pregnant, and I stepped away from the business to raise our family.

For a while, my life seemed almost embarrassingly perfect. I'd married my first love, we had a healthy little boy, and the business we'd built together was thriving.

I truly thought I'd won at life.

Then Jasmine Shaw appeared at my door with proof that she was pregnant.

"Ms. Xavier, I'm having your husband's baby."

She'd been smiling when she told me.

"He says every day he spends with you feels like an eternity."

An eternity.

I'd once had nothing but contempt for women whose husbands cheated and who still refused to leave. They were weak, I'd thought. Stupid. If they stayed and suffered, that was their own choice.

It was easy to think that until I became one of them.

The news hit me so hard my hands started shaking, and my ears rang. I barely remembered crossing the distance between us. The next thing I knew, my fist was tangled in Jasmine's hair, and we were fighting.

There was nothing dignified about me that day. I screamed, I raged, and I let every ounce of fury inside me spill out.

Then I told Yuri I wanted a divorce.

He dropped to his knees.

"I was drunk, Quinn. It happened once. It was a mistake. You're the only woman I've ever loved."

He signed over every share he owned in the company and swore he'd never betray me again.

Then Xander clung to my leg, sobbing and begging me not to leave.

"Mommy, please. I want you and Daddy together."

My mother called too.

"Men make mistakes. Yuri knows he screwed up, so give him another chance. And think about Xander. You know how hard divorce can be on a child."

So I forced myself to swallow the betrayal, like a mouthful of broken glass I could neither choke down nor spit out. Every day I endured it, the shards seemed to cut me deeper from the inside.

If Yuri came home late, I wondered whether he'd been with Jasmine. If he glanced at his phone, my stomach tightened as I imagined another message from her.

Eventually, I barely recognized myself.

Worse, I hated the woman I'd become.

So when Jasmine appeared on my doorstep pregnant a second time, beneath all the rage was something I hadn't expected.

Relief.

At least the uncertainty was over.

Back then, I never imagined I'd soon be convinced that Xander had died because of me.

By the time the procedure ended, I'd bitten my lip open.

The doctor wanted to admit me, but I refused. I couldn't bear to stay in that hospital another minute.

So I went home alone, barely able to keep myself upright.

Xander tore his hand from Ethan the moment he saw Yuri and ran to him, sobbing so hard he could barely get the words out."Daddy, they put Mommy in that little bottle. They said she's never coming back. Is that true?"He clung to Yuri, struggling for breath between sobs."I miss Mommy. I won't lie to scare her ever again. I'll be good from now on, I promise. Can you make her come back?"Yuri didn't answer. His eyes were fixed on the urn in Ethan's arms, so bloodshot they looked almost raw."You cremated her?"His voice rose sharply. "I didn't even get to see her one last time. How could you cremate her before I saw her?"He lunged for the urn, but Ethan turned away to protect it and punched him across the face."You think you have the right? You and Quinn have nothing to do with each other anymore!"Yuri made no attempt to dodge. The blow split his lip, sending blood down his chin, but he kept coming, reaching desperately for the urn."Give her back to me. Please... give her back."His

Diane suddenly scrambled to her feet and bolted down the hall.Ethan stayed behind because my body was still in the trauma room. He called after her, but he didn't follow.Diane stumbled all the way to Jasmine's room. Jasmine was propped up against the pillows, and the moment she saw her, tears spilled down her face. She reached out pitifully."Diane, it hurts so much. I lost the baby..."Diane slapped her across the face with all her strength. Before Jasmine could even process what had happened, Diane lunged at her and wrapped both hands around her throat."Give me back my daughter!" Her scream was raw with grief and rage. "Give me my daughter back!"Jasmine couldn't breathe. Her face darkened as she struggled in Diane's grip, and by the time the nurses rushed in, it took several of them to pull the two women apart.Even after they dragged her away, Diane sat on the floor pointing at Jasmine."You slept with a married man! Watching them, I felt nothing but bitter contempt. When I was alive, none of them could spare me a second glance. Now that I was dead, they were falling apart one after another. After coughing up blood, Yuri seemed to lose whatever had been holding him upright. He collapsed to his knees, and the doctor immediately called for help.Yuri ignored him. Wiping his mouth with the back of his hand, he grabbed the doctor's coat and begged from the floor."Please try again. Just one more time. She's strong. She can make it!"The doctor couldn't get him to stand."Mr. Stone, there's nothing more we can do. Your wife was already in extremely poor condition. She'd just undergone a D&C, and with only one kidney, her body couldn't withstand this kind of trauma. The fact that she survived long enough to reach the hospital was remarkable."Yuri's head snapped up."What did you say? A D&C?""You didn't know?" The doctor looked taken aback. "The procedure was clearly very recent. Combined with the fact

The ambulance finally arrived to find chaos waiting for them. For a moment, even the paramedics seemed stunned by the number of injured people.Yuri grabbed one of them by the arm with a blood-slick hand. "My wife first. And her mother. Take care of them first!"The paramedic glanced down and realized Yuri still had a stab wound in his abdomen, his shirt completely soaked with blood."We need another ambulance," he immediately called over the radio. "Multiple patients at the scene."Diane and I were loaded into the first ambulance. Just before the doors closed, Yuri shouted after the paramedics, "I'll take the next one. Just save her!"Red and blue lights flashed through the darkness as we raced to the hospital.I was taken straight into the trauma room.Diane regained consciousness soon afterward, and the first words out of her mouth were, "Where's Quinn? Where's my daughter?"The nurses tried to keep her in bed, but she tore the IV from her hand and stumbled into the hall. By the tim

The wind roared in my ears.I hit the ground below, the back of my head catching the edge of a flower bed. Pain swallowed me whole. Blood spread beneath my body as I drifted in and out, darkness closing over me only to recede again.Screams erupted from upstairs."Quinn!"They came running down moments later, Yuri reaching me first. The knife was still buried in his stomach, and his shirt was soaked through with blood, but he seemed oblivious to his own injury. He dropped to his knees beside me, eyes bloodshot, tears falling hot against my face."Quinn. Quinn!"His hands hovered helplessly over me. He wanted to pick me up, but he was terrified of hurting me more, and his entire body shook with the effort of holding himself together.I tried to smile.Something wet and thick caught in my throat. A coughing fit seized me, and blood sprayed across Yuri's face.He flinched as if I'd struck him.My blood clung to his lashes as he leaned closer, his voice so hoarse I could barely hear him."

I could hear laughter from inside the house before I even reached the door. The moment I walked in, though, the conversation died.Jasmine sat in the middle of the couch with everyone gathered around her, the center of attention in my own home. She looked up and gave me a sweet, welcoming smile."Quinn, you're back."For one disorienting second, I felt like the guest. Then something at her throat caught the light.I stopped cold.Grandma's pendant. On the day she died, she'd placed it around my neck with shaking hands and told me it was all she had to leave me."I don't have money or property to give you, sweetheart. But I've worn this my whole life. You keep it now. When I'm gone, let it watch over you for me."I crossed the room before anyone could stop me and ripped it from Jasmine's neck."This belongs to me. Who gave you the right to wear it?"Her startled cry had barely left her mouth when Yuri dragged me back, and tears immediately welled in her eyes."For God's sake, Quinn, eno
