Macie boarded the subway and kept glancing over her shoulder to see if the man had followed her. Fortunately, she didn't see him anywhere.

Even so, her breathing remained unsteady. Her brows knit together as she realized just how on edge she'd been lately.

When she finally reached her company building, she paused at the entrance and glanced down the road once more. Most of the cars parked on the street were black or gray. There were a few white ones, but none matched the model she remembered.

Macie let out a soft sigh of relief and stepped inside. "Maybe I really am just overthinking it," she thought to herself. It would take a while for her nerves to settle.

Across the street, the man was still watching her, but now he was in a gray van. Just as he'd suspected, the target wasn't just suspicious of him; she was aware and on guard. He lowered his cap, lit a cigarette, and closed his eyes for a short rest.
