Chapter 4

Author: Mister Rhapsody
I had planned to get passersby to help Leonard realize that there was a smell coming from him. That way, he'd agree to go to the hospital with me and find out what was causing it.

Yet now, he was convinced I'd gone mad and was determined to go home. He wouldn't come with me anymore.

I had no idea why random people couldn't smell it, but one thing was for sure—his roommates were dead set against me hiring cleaners because they were definitely hiding something.

Plus, whatever it was had to be causing the odor coming from Leonard.

In my past life, I called in a cleaning service when Leonard's roommates were away. They rushed in to stop me whenever they heard about it from Leonard.

In this life, I would decide to hire a cleaner without telling Leonard. I would find the truth and save him, even if it cost me my life again.

"It's all my fault. If you don't feel like going out, just have this glass of milk and rest at home."

Leonard soon passed out after drinking the milk that had been mixed with sleeping pills.

I rushed to open the door and let the cleaning lady in, telling her to scrub every single room and corner from top to bottom. If she found anything, she would be my witness. Leonard's roommates wouldn't escape justice, even if they beat me to death.

But the cleaning lady's first words after stepping inside hit me like a thunderbolt.

"Why bother cleaning a place that is already this clean?"

Upon seeing the cleaning lady's unbothered expression, I couldn't help but exclaim, "Do you not smell that terrible odor?"

The cleaning lady cast me a brief glance. "What's wrong with your nose? What odor are you talking about?"

In that instant, every suspicion I'd had crumbled. The people on the street couldn't smell the odor coming from Leonard, and the cleaning lady couldn't smell anything in the house either. It was as if no one could smell that overpowering odor.

Could the problem really lie with me? It wasn't possible. If I had a problem, the hospital would have discovered it.

"Get cleaning quickly! I'll help alongside you! Check every inch of this place, including the cabinets and under the bed. Don't miss a single spot! If you find something out of place, let me know immediately! I'll pay you ten times your normal rate!"

I couldn't think about anything else anymore. I had to uncover the strange secret hidden in the apartment.

I rushed into Leonard's roommates' rooms as if I'd gone crazy. I didn't care about their privacy or that I was breaking the law. I opened every drawer and bottle, determined to find the source of the foul odor.

Yet, even after an hour of searching, the cleaning lady and I hadn't found anything strange in any of the places we'd checked.

I looked at the mess scattered around us and collapsed onto the floor, too exhausted to stand.

Did it mean that they did nothing wrong? Did it mean that I was the one who'd gone mad? Had the foul odor I'd been noticing all along been nothing but my imagination?

Just as I began to wonder if I was the problem, Leonard's four roommates stormed back, looking ready for a fight.

"Who told you that you could enter our rooms and mess with our belongings without our permission? I've put up with you long enough! Just because you're Leonard's father doesn't mean you can violate our privacy! Get out of here! You're not welcome here!"

They rushed toward me, roughly grabbing me and trying to shove me outside.

In my past life, I'd been accidentally pushed over during the struggle and died a miserable death. I couldn't let history repeat itself.

I fought to get away from them, moving toward the couch as I explained, "I'm sorry, everyone. I didn't mean to violate your privacy. I smelled a strange odor and wanted to find out where it was coming from—"

I hadn't finished explaining when the cleaning lady, who had been watching the whole commotion, interrupted me. "What nonsense are you talking about? Your place is clean! There's nothing wrong here. Where's this supposed smell coming from?"

Upon hearing the cleaning lady's words, Leonard's roommates seized me by the collar and dragged me outside.

"Did you hear what she said? There's nothing dirty about this place. There's no room here for a filthy person like you! Get out right now! Otherwise, we'll report you to the police and let the whole world know that Leonard has a madman for a father!"

They didn't even bother hiding how much they despised and hated me.

But rather than getting angry, I simply laughed coldly. I'd finally figured out where the foul odor on Leonard was coming from.

"There really is something dirty in this house, but it isn't me…"

Seeing that I had truly guessed everything, Leonard's roommates turned pale with panic. But since they'd go so far as to kill someone, they weren't the type to stay shaken long. They quickly recovered and pointed at me while threatening the cleaning lady. "You'd better remember this. He's crazy. "You didn't find anything suspicious here or smell anything foul. If you say otherwise, I'll make sure your whole family suffers!"They looked at me again and laughed mockingly. "You lunatic! Go ahead and call the police! We're not afraid of them. We have evidence that you're mentally ill! Do you have any evidence that we murdered your son? "Oh, I almost forgot. Your son gave us a lot of money before he went missing. He really was a good person! If you reunite with him after you die, make sure you thank him for us!"Their flippant, mocking tone filled me with overwhelming anger and grief.I couldn't hold back my grief as I asked, "Why? Why did you have to kill Leonard?"They didn't ans

In that instant, everything became clear to me. I'd fallen right into their trap from the very beginning. Those four roommates had taken hold of Leonard's phone after killing him and faked the appearance of him still being alive. Then they got rid of his body and erased all evidence of the murder.I wanted to surprise Leonard, so I waited until I reached the train station to tell him I was coming. I ran into a ride-hailing driver who offered to give me a discounted ride. I wanted to get to Leonard as quickly as possible, so I got in the car without thinking much of it.In the car, I suddenly felt dizzy and drifted off to sleep. I felt terrible when I woke up. It seemed the driver had been bribed too. I'd been drugged while in the car, and it had caused me to hallucinate. I missed Leonard so much that I "saw" him when he didn't exist and smelled an "odor" that wasn't actually coming from him.My sense of smell was fine, but my mind was messed up, which was why the "odor" on Leona

In that moment, I finally realized the truth. Leonard was dead. He was no longer here, and I was the only one who could see him. Leonard's roommates had forgotten to fill the cleaning lady in on that detail, and that slip-up was what blew a hole in their lie.The cleaning lady panicked and lunged for the door to escape, but I grabbed her by the arm and yanked her back. The next instant, all four of Leonard's roommates charged at me. "You crazy bastard! It's bad enough that you keep harassing us, but you are giving the cleaning lady a hard time! We had no idea you'd called her over. How could we have paid her off in advance?"I gritted my teeth and roared, "Why did you rush back here at the cost of missing class if you really had no idea that I'd called the cleaning lady? I'm guessing you installed quite a few hidden surveillance cameras in the house, didn't you? "You've been spying on everything I do! That's how you knew I'd called the cleaning lady and where I'd hidden those

I had barely finished speaking when someone knocked at the door. I opened the door, revealing the cleaning lady who had come by earlier that day. I'd paid her to come back.Leonard's roommates immediately lost it. "You fucking lunatic! What the hell are you trying to pull here?"If you insist on saying there was an odor in the house, we accepted that too. You searched inside and out of the place behind our backs, and we didn't argue much either—we just drove you away!"You've checked everything, and there's nothing to be found. You even said that the smell you kept complaining about was gone. What's the point of calling the cleaning lady here?"I waited until they had finished shouting before speaking calmly. "The smell in the house is indeed gone, but the smell coming from Leonard is still there."By now, not just the roommates, but even the cleaning lady had reached her limit. "I doubt there's anything wrong with your nose. I think there's something wrong with you mentally. Your

I had figured everything out by then. I knew what was behind the foul odor and why no one but me could detect it. I'd also confirmed my suspicions, but for Leonard's sake, I couldn't tell anyone yet.I visited Leonard's university first and talked to some of his classmates. They said Leonard was kindhearted and would set aside some of his allowance to help children in impoverished areas who couldn't afford an education. As I was leaving campus, a timid young woman gave me a small box and asked me to deliver it to Leonard. "I made this gift for Leonard myself. I hope he'll be back on his feet soon."I asked, "Why don't you hand it to him yourself?"The young woman replied, "Leonard's leg isn't healed yet, so I didn't want to go look for him. I'm afraid he'll move around too much."I accepted the gift and nodded. "I'll make sure Leonard gets it."I wandered around for a while before returning to Leonard's rental after dark. I knocked, but when his roommate saw me, he immediately tr

Leonard's roommates snapped. "You're a madman! Who else could it be if not you? We've been living just fine until you showed up! You've been looking for trouble ever since you got here! "You even sneaked into our rooms and searched through everything without our permission! Do you understand how serious your actions are? We could report you to the police and have you arrested!"They became even angrier. They gritted their teeth as they cursed at me, dragging me toward the door by my collar with all their strength.I refused to leave, fighting them with all my strength as I stared coldly at each of their faces. "Did I start trouble? I brought you all gifts on the very first day I arrived. I kept quiet about the awful smell in this house just to maintain a good relationship with you. I even covered your food and everyday expenses!"But the moment I proposed cleaning the apartment, you all reacted so strongly and cursed me out. You're desperately trying to get me out now!
