Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: yb
The organizer called for me to get onstage and prepare for my opening speech.

I hurried to the dressing room to put on my custom necklace, only to find the jewelry box empty.

Looking up toward the end of the hallway, I saw Victoria wearing my necklace, leaning into Enzo's arms with a bright smile.

That necklace was a custom piece I'd designed three months ago to match Enzo's.

The moment Victoria noticed me looking, the smile on her face froze.

Enzo frowned and instinctively shielded her behind him. "It's just a necklace. I'll order you a new one tonight."

But before I could tell him not to bother, Victoria's foot slipped, and she lunged straight into the display. As she fell, she "accidentally" splashed red wine across the painting in front of her. The frame crashed to the floor and broke.

The painting was my proudest piece. I'd stayed up countless nights to finish it and planned to make it the grand finale of the exhibition.

Victoria sat on the floor, her eyes red as she began to cry in panic. "I'm sorry, Franca. I didn't mean to. I just wanted to get a closer look at your painting…"

Enzo rushed to her immediately, wrapping her in his arms and murmuring soft, comforting words.

The guests gathered around her, all comforting the poor Principessa. No one cared about the painting I'd poured my heart into or even noticed me standing right beside it.

Mamma had been looking at Victoria with concern, but when she turned and saw my indifferent expression, she suddenly stiffened.

"Franca, I remember you used to love collecting famous paintings." Her voice softened. "How about I have your Papa cancel the family meeting tonight and go to the auction house to bid on that genuine Picasso for you?"

It sounded like a mother spoiling her daughter. But I knew she was only trying to keep me from making a scene over Victoria like I used to.

They had forgotten that I no longer had the right to compete with Victoria, let alone challenge their real daughter.

I shook my head with a wry smile. "I'm not a Moretti by blood, so I have no right to accept a gift this expensive. The painting is already ruined. There's no point making a fuss over it."

Mamma's smile froze. A complicated look flashed across her eyes.

By then, Victoria had completely stolen the spotlight at my exhibition. After enjoying the attention and flattery from the guests, she walked toward me, smiling as she held a bouquet of blue roses from one of them.

"Franca, congratulations on a successful show," she said, pulling a dried leaf from the bouquet and handing it to me.

Every eye in the room turned toward me. I calmly took the leaf and thanked her.

Seeing that I didn't lose my temper like I used to, a flicker of disappointment crossed Victoria's eyes.

She immediately threw herself into Papa's arms and said, "Papa, did you forget to prepare a gift for Franca? Don't neglect her just because I've woken up."

The entire room fell silent. Papa's expression turned awkward, and Mamma looked away.

Before Victoria woke up, my parents had indeed prepared an extravagant gift for me—20 percent of the Moretti family's assets in Enwora.

It was even more than the share my older brother Giovanni Moretti had received. But after Victoria woke up, everyone quietly acted as if it had never happened.

My parents went quiet, clearly at a loss for words. I broke the silence for them. "I'm only an adopted daughter. I have no blood ties to you, so I don't deserve something this valuable. It was always meant for Victoria."

Enzo stood nearby, his brow furrowed. I followed his gaze to the blue diamond ring gleaming on Victoria's ring finger.

He had once promised to propose to me with that very ring in front of everyone at my exhibition. But now it was on Victoria's finger instead.

I looked away, unusually calm. I had nothing left to lose.

I had turned down an offer to become chief designer at Slento's leading design institute, all so I could stay home and be by Enzo's side. Now, it was finally time to get my life back on track.

Tears streamed down Victoria's face as she said, "I've had people keeping an eye on Franca to protect her. I never thought she'd stoop this low after moving to Slento. If our enemies find out, our name will be ruined."Victoria expected our parents and Giovanni to fly into a rage like they always did and then have me dealt with for bringing shame on the family. But when she looked up, she found three pairs of icy eyes staring back at her. Her scheme fell apart instantly.Giovanni had always had his men keeping watch around my apartment.Everyone in the family except Victoria knew that I spent my days either at the design institute or working at a local bakery. My life was completely ordinary, with nothing to hide.Victoria had only brought about her own downfall. Once she was kicked out of the family, she had no idea how to support herself after years of living in luxury. With nowhere else to go, she turned to her doctor. But Giovanni moved faster and had Dr. Evans charged with m

They refused to believe that their beloved eldest daughter could be such a monster. But after Giovanni looked into it himself, the truth came out, and they could no longer deny what Victoria had done. The car accident and surgery that had supposedly left her in a coma had been an elaborate lie in the beginning.Rebellious by nature, Victoria had no desire to go to school or shoulder the responsibilities of becoming the family heir, so she paid her doctor a fortune to help her fake her condition.Whenever our parents were away, she lived it up at a luxurious villa outside the hospital. Whenever they came to visit, she would rush back to her room and lie there pretending to be unconscious. To prevent our parents from discovering the truth, the doctor claimed that Victoria's weak immune system made close contact dangerous. So he only allowed them to watch her from a distance.Over the years, the enormous medical bills my parents paid for Victoria's treatment had gone straight into

Victoria pushed Giovanni and Enzo out of the room without giving them a chance to speak."Franca just needed some space. Nothing could have happened to her. What matters now is my engagement party."She has to give the speech, or everyone will think she stayed away because I stole her fiance! Find a replacement for me right now. She has to look just like Franca!"Giovanni and Enzo exchanged a look, both unable to hide their confusion. But after years of spoiling Victoria, catering to her had become second nature. They did what she wanted and immediately launched a frantic search through the black market. By then, I'd spent a fortune erasing my old identity and starting over with a clean slate. I gave myself a new name—Oriana.Victoria could tear up my offer letter, but she couldn't take away my expertise or talent. If I'd earned my place at the institute once, I could earn it again. The day I reported for work, the sun was shining brightly. Amid the crowd outside the company bui

Enzo's face went pale. The news hit him like a bolt from the blue. His tall frame swayed, completely stunned by what he'd just heard."She's dead? No! That can't be! Was it the Gambinos? Or did another family kill her when we were away?"Enzo utterly lost his composure. His mind spiraled with gruesome images of killings and torture, each one more horrifying than the last, until he could barely breathe.Giovanni gripped his phone and took a deep breath, trying to stay calm as the heir to the family. But his voice trembled when he spoke. "Send out everyone we have. Find her. I want to see her, dead or alive!"He grabbed Enzo by the collar. "Get a grip! This is just another one of her games! She's jealous because we've been spoiling Victoria these past three months, so she pulled this stunt just to get under our skin!"Enzo's eyes were bloodshot. "No, Giovanni. You don't get it. If she was only throwing a tantrum, she wouldn't have gone as far as getting a death certificate."Erasin

It was the first time I'd ever seen that expression on his face.Guilt. Shock. Even disbelief.Giovanni stared at me in silence.I kept my head down, letting my tears fall onto the scraps of paper scattered at my feet.He was probably remembering how, whenever I was wronged in the past, I would turn the whole house upside down. But now, even my crying was silent. I didn't dare make a sound.Giovanni suddenly let go of my hand as if he'd been burned."You knew all along?" his voice rasped. "Why didn't you tell us? You used to care so much about us… Why are you just giving up like this?"I found it almost laughable. They were the ones who abandoned me first. To keep Victoria happy after she woke up, they turned a blind eye when Enzo falsified a DNA report to erase my identity. To them, my dignity and suffering meant nothing compared to a single tear from Victoria. After everything they'd done to me, I wasn't going to beg for their affection anymore. I wanted to leave this godfor

When I returned to the manor, I locked my bedroom door and called the design institute in Slento again. After I settled everything over the phone, I suddenly heard laughter from downstairs. My brother, Giovanni, was back. When I was little, I used to cling to him constantly. But after he went abroad to take over one of the family's branches, he became so busy that he barely had time to call me.I had texted him asking if he could come back for my first art exhibition, but he never replied.I certainly wasn't foolish enough to think he'd rushed home to surprise me, since my exhibition was already over.I quietly looked downstairs and saw Giovanni holding Victoria tightly in his arms."I came home too late to celebrate my principessa waking up," he said dotingly. "I deserve to be punished."Victoria pouted playfully and slipped her arm through his. "Then you have to make it up to me. Put your work overseas on hold and spend time with me every day," she teased.Giovanni laughed a
