Chapter 18

Author: Simple Thief
Five days before Thanksgiving, the mood in Room 312 was already starting to lighten.

Brandon ordered a bunch of savory Thanksgiving pies online and was handing them out to everyone. Lauren was at her desk putting together gift boxes of pies, her entire table covered in ribbons and cardboard.

Wanting to join in, Emily had bought a few boxes of Thanksgiving pies herself. She opened one box and set it on her desk, munching as she sorted through her fieldwork notes.

During lunch break, Lauren cam

Cynthia hit save, locked her phone, and set it face-down on her desk. The warm milk in her flask had gone cold. She picked it up, took a sip, and frowned slightly. The temperature was off. Whenever she prepared the milk herself, she always missed the mark by a little.Back then, when Ian warmed milk for her, it was never wrong. Every time he handed it to her, the temperature was perfect. When she asked how he did it, he said he tested it with the inside of his wrist. Doing it enough times made him just know when it was right.Cynthia put the flask down and turned around. She pulled open the left drawer of her desk halfway and took out a letter from the very back. The envelope had yellowed with age, and the corners were creased. She didn't open it. She just held it between her fingers and stared at it for a couple of seconds before sliding it back into place and closing the drawer. Then she turned back to her computer and opened her email. Not her university work account—her other

On Thursday afternoon, Emily was crouched in front of her seat in the classroom, sorting through photos from a fieldwork project. Lauren sat beside her and helped her pick the best ones."This shot of Stonebridge Alley is taken from a great angle. You got all the details on that archway at the entrance," Lauren said."My brother took that one. He says the trick to shooting buildings is all about lighting and angles," Emily answered.Lauren flipped to the next photo and tilted her head. "Your brother's pretty good at taking these photos. This framing screams architecture major.""Of course. My brother can do anything."Emily pulled a plastic container out of her bag and popped the lid. Inside were four neat honey jelly squares with tiny dried blossoms scattered on top. "Here, have some. My brother made them last night."Lauren took one and bit into it. Her eyes lit up. "This is so good. The sweetness is perfect and not cloying at all. What kind of sugar did he use?""He said he u

"Oh, there's one more thing," Emily added. She set her bowl down, her expression turning a little more serious. "After Professor Quill left today, Professor Lynch left that cup of coffee by the door and never touched it."About half an hour later, she came out of her office to get some water. When she walked past the coffee, she glanced at it and told Lauren that anyone could have it if they wanted it."Lauren tried it and said it was really good. Seems Professor Quill's pour-over game is strong. Professor Lynch didn't say a word, though. She just went back into her office with her flask.""What's in the flask?" Ian asked, his voice even."Warm milk." Emily prodded a shrimp with her fork. "The plain kind, no sugar or any other flavor. She has it every day, and she's super picky about the temperature. It can't be too hot or too cold."Lauren helped her get it once, and she complained the milk was too hot. She even added some cold milk herself before drinking it."Ian put down his

Three days passed before Ewan showed up at the humanities building again. This time, he didn't bring flowers. When Emily got home that night, she gave Ian a blow-by-blow of what had happened."A little after 2:00 pm today, Professor Quill came by again," she said.Ian was in the kitchen blanching shrimp. He kept his back to her without turning around and acknowledged her words with a quiet hum."He didn't bring flowers this time. Instead, he brought a cup of coffee—the hand-brewed type. It was in this really pretty glass with a brown heat sleeve around it."Emily leaned against the doorframe, her arms crossed over her chest."When he knocked and came in, the few of us looked at each other, but nobody said a word. Professor Quill walked right up to Professor Lynch's door and said, 'Professor Lynch, I remember you mentioning that you like coffee. I brewed this myself with medium-roasted beans of good quality. Should be right up your alley.'"Ian scooped the shrimp out and onto a p

Emily wasn't done. "By the way, when Professor Quill was leaving today, he stopped to say goodbye to us. He even told us that we could ask him for help if we ever ran into any legal questions about our sources. That was really nice of him."Ian flipped the potatoes in the pan with his spatula. "Go wash your hands.""Alright, alright." Emily walked away.Only the sound of oil sizzling in the pan was left.Ian stared down at the potato slices, the spatula hovering over the side of the pan. His right hand was clenched so tightly around the handle that his knuckles had gone white. He forced himself to loosen and shift his grip, then went back to stirring.A 30-year-old associate professor with a PhD from Merania who came from a good family, had good looks, and was polished and well-mannered. He'd brought 21 white roses wrapped in brown kraft paper and tied with an off-white ribbon. The flowers would wilt, but his sincerity wouldn't.Ian turned off the burner, plated the food, and ca

Three days after Thanksgiving, Emily came home to find Ian slicing potatoes in the kitchen. She tossed her backpack onto the couch, then barreled into the kitchen. She grabbed both sides of the doorway, her whole face lit up with excitement over fresh gossip."Ian.""What?""Breaking news.""You have breaking news every day.""This time, it's actually breaking news. Like, nuclear-level."Ian's hands didn't slow down. The potato slices were all the same thickness and lined up neatly on the chopping board. "Spill."Emily took a deep breath and switched to a serious newscaster voice. "Professor Lynch has a suitor."Ian's knife paused for half a second before coming down again at the same steady pace. "What's that got to do with you?""I live for gossip."She slinked into the kitchen and hopped onto the kitchen counter, her legs swinging back and forth. "Besides, aren't you even a little curious? Somebody actually has the guts to hit on the devil incarnate!""Not at all.""It'
