Chapter 3

Author: Ding
In that instant, everyone in the room fell silent. Marco's chest heaved with rage, his face alternating between pale and flushed. I didn't pay him any attention and headed upstairs to pack my things.

Marco had probably forgotten this. He had signed an agreement when he kneeled before Papa to ask for my hand, stating that I had the right to cancel the engagement and claim triple the assets the Morettis had put into the DeLuca Famiglia if he ever betrayed me before the marriage.

That agreement had now become his punishment.

I left the penthouse in Aethelgard and returned to the Famiglia estate in Bellevue.

Papa was momentarily stunned the moment he spotted me. He then approached me with a smile, asking, "How come you didn't let me know ahead of time that you'd come back, Lina? Have you eaten breakfast yet?"

He noticed the luggage I was carrying, his smile slowly vanishing. "What happened, Lina?"

I broke down completely as the tears streamed down my face. "I want to call off the engagement, Papa. I've also lost the child."

Papa was in the dark about Marco and Fiora.

I was consumed by indignation and hurt then, but I couldn't bring myself to be ruthless. I kept it to myself and endured everything in silence.

Papa fell silent for a long time after hearing what I said. He then walked toward the window and lit a cigarette; the Don of the Moretti Famiglia—the ruler of the criminal underworld of Bellevue's port—now looked like a typical old man with his hunched back.

Mamma, Sofia Esposito, stepped out of the kitchen, her eyes welling up with tears the moment she heard what I said. She then gathered me into her arms and asked, "Are you in a lot of pain, my darling Lina?"

I wept even more uncontrollably. I then laid out the entire situation regarding Marco and Fiora to Mamma and Papa.

I was aware that the partnership between the Moretti Famiglia and the DeLuca Famiglia was intricate. If the engagement was called off, their alliance would fall apart, followed by a full redistribution of power and interests. It was more than a personal issue; it was a restructuring of the criminal underworld of Novaris.

Papa stubbed out his cigarette and brought his hand down hard on the table. "You can just call off the engagement, Lina! I'm already 62 years old—I've got nothing to lose! If it's a fight the DeLucas want, we'll give it to them. If it's a talk, we'll listen.

"You ought to know that the Moretti Famiglia has ruled Bellevue for four decades, and we didn't do it by marrying off our Principessas! You're back now, so you don't have to worry about a thing, Lina!"

I broke down and wept even more after hearing what Papa said. I moved back into the estate, letting Marco's calls go to voicemail one after another. I just wanted some quiet time to focus on my own physical recovery before addressing the fallout.

Papa suddenly returned one day, looking absolutely livid. "That bastard Marco!"

I found out through Papa that the DeLuca Famiglia had begun to target the Moretti Famiglia's port business. They were hijacking shipments, paying off snitches, and had even turned two of our captains against us.

I hit my breaking point and bolted out the door to confront Marco. I couldn't believe how shameless Marco was.

I returned to the penthouse in Aethelgard, and the moment I opened the door, I found someone else in the living room—Fiora, whom Marco claimed to have sent to the western side of Arinthia.

Marco's expression immediately hardened the moment I returned.

Fiora flinched slightly, but she didn't retreat behind Marco. She remained seated on the couch, tracing the edge of her coffee cup with her fingers while keeping her gaze fixed downward in silence.

Marco's expression soured even further. "You've got a lot of nerve coming back after what you did, Lina."

I regarded him with an indifferent expression. "Why should I be ashamed to return, Marco? You're the one who openly brought your mistress into our home. Where do you get the gall to blame me? You didn't need to sabotage the Moretti Famiglia's operations, even if the engagement is called off, Marco!"

Marco's gaze hardened. "You should consider this a warning and a consequence for your actions, Lina. You had no business going after Fiora, especially when she was already set to depart."

I fixed my gaze on Marco, finding the whole situation incredulous. "You think I went after Fiora? I wouldn't want to dirty my hands on someone like her, Marco."

Marco interrogated me sharply. "Who else could it have been? You sent men to corner her at the Levant Airport with the order to break her legs! If I hadn't provided her with security, Fiora would be in a hospital bed right now!"

He looked at me coldly, a mocking smile touching his lips. "You told me yourself that you were going to destroy her, Lina."

I had indeed been crazy enough about Marco once to swear to destroy Fiora even if it meant destroying myself. I had changed, though. I glanced at Fiora, who sat perfectly still like a fragile porcelain figurine; her long eyelashes created a shadow that masked the emotions in her eyes.

I noticed Fiora lifting her gaze to meet mine the moment Marco looked away. I found no malice or victory in her expression, only a great weariness and a slight, almost invisible guilt. I was momentarily dazed by that gaze.

Marco continued speaking. "I'll have Fiora relocated to Lansport so that you won't cross paths again. You can consider this the price for the harm you did to her, Lina."

He then softened his tone, continuing, "I'll let it slide this once, Lina; after all, I know you only acted out because you love me. I'll hold a meeting to stabilize the situation while the Moretti and DeLuca partnership stays in place. You're still carrying my child, so please just take care of yourself and stop causing trouble, Lina."

I knew then that he had no idea that I had lost the child when he chose to go to Fiora's side. I refused to waste any more words on him, and since he didn't care about his own dignity, I didn't care about sparing his feelings.

I looked him in the eyes and nodded with a smile, thinking that it was time for me to deliver a grand gift to Marco.

It was the third month since we settled in Nobilis. There were now two cats and one dog in our house, and the yard was filled with lemon trees and bougainvillea.I would wake up every morning to a view of the sea through my window.Papa went to the dock to fish every day. He would occasionally bring home a large grouper, which we would fry for dinner. Mamma grew vegetables in the backyard—tomatoes, basil, and chili peppers—picking a handful whenever she cooked pasta. They couldn't have been fresher.Vincenzo showed up during our fourth month in Nobilis. He had traded his suits for a white linen shirt, khakis, and canvas sneakers. He didn't look like a Don anymore; he just looked like a good-looking Ilyrian man. "I just happened to pass by, Lina. Is that coffee still on the table?"I lightly stepped aside and said, "Sure."He walked into the yard and settled into the wicker chair beneath the lemon tree. He took a sip of the coffee that I had brewed for him and poured it into one of

In the end, only Marco, Vincenzo, and I were left in the warehouse.Marco was still holding me, his hands trembling while asking, "Are you alright, Lina?"I pushed him away, saying, "Let go of me, Marco."Marco looked devastated. "I really had no idea that my mother would go this far, Lina. I—""You're clueless about so many things, Marco," I said as I rose to my feet, Vincenzo draping his coat around me. I then glared at Marco and continued, "Do you know that your mother was just about to kill me? Do you know that if Vincenzo hadn't arrived, I would be at the bottom of the Sanguine River right now? You don't. You're clueless about everything. You only care about Fiora, your 'last time,' and how hard everything is for you."Marco's eyes welled up with tears. "I'm sorry, Lina. I—"I cut him off, saying, "You don't have to apologize to me, Marco. You know, my biggest mistake wasn't loving you—it was staying after the first time you cheated. You lied every time you promised me tha

I was hurled onto the floor, struggling desperately as I tried to crawl back.Donna approached and assumed a crouching position to observe me. She was dressed in a Chanel outfit with her hair meticulously styled and a brand-new manicure. She appeared to be a socialite who had just finished playing bridge at the country club, but her eyes were devoid of warmth. She spoke in a very light tone, as if she were discussing a trivial matter. "You little tramp! You really thought you could wreck my son's Famiglia, huh? Did you think you could just walk out on the DeLuca Famiglia, Lina?"I looked her in the eye, feeling utterly incredulous. "Your son was the one who cheated on me first, Donna."Donna sneered. "You call that cheating? You ought to know that I was the one who told him before the wedding that it is normal for a man to have someone else on the outside. I mean, his father had nearly seven or eight mistresses, and I had never complained about it. "Who cares about a mere strippe

I stated coldly, "You'd better keep your people in check, Marco."Marco hesitated on the other end of the line before stating cautiously, "There's really nothing going on between Fiora and me, Lina."I couldn't be bothered to argue with him anymore, so I said, "You should go look at the posts online. You guys made the first move, so don't blame me for being ruthless, Marco."I immediately ended the call after saying that.Marco instantly checked the posts on his phone, his face paling as he looked through them. He called me back almost immediately, saying, "I truly had no knowledge of this, Lina. You have to believe me!"I sneered. "It was your people who pulled this, regardless of whether you were in the loop. You'd better not blame me for hitting back since they wanted to start something, Marco."Marco's voice carried a hint of pleading while saying, "You can rest assured that I'll take care of this situation, Lina."He then went silent for a good while before finally asking t

Fiora appeared thinner than before, her high cheekbones casting shadows over deep-set eyes. She was dressed in a black turtleneck that contrasted with her increasingly pallid face."Have you no shame, Lina? Why are you still involved with Marco after calling off the engagement?" Fiora's voice was gravelly, her expression weary instead of the expected radiance.I immediately understood what was happening and looked at her with pure derision. I was no longer standing in their way, so all that drama—the pining, the pity, and the "final goodbyes"—lost its justification. "I don't like picking up trash that others have thrown away, Fiora. If you are so capable, then keep a tighter leash on your man."Flora's eyes went bloodshot with rage, her face twisting in fury. She tried to swing her hand to slap me, but someone grabbed her arm from behind in a vice-like grip."Is it that even just any random, insignificant person dares to act in Bellevue now?"I looked on as Vincenzo tossed Fiora

  • Why's the Don Crying After I Dumped Him?   Chapter 5

Upon returning to the estate in Bellevue, Mamma had already seen to it that the kitchen prepared a feast; after all, we had won a decisive victory.I had actually consulted with Papa the day I returned from Aethelgard. He was well into his years, and all I ever wanted was for him to live out his retirement in comfort.I knew that Marco had betrayed my trust, but staying in that relationship would have cost me Papa's legacy and everything three generations of the Moretti Famiglia had built. I decided it wasn't worth the sacrifice.Having spent the whole night smoking, Papa spoke to me the following morning. "You should go seek out the Luciano Famiglia. They've been after the port for years, so it's better to sell it to them for a high price now than to let the DeLuca Famiglia slowly pick it apart."I reached out to Vincenzo Luciano, the Don of the Luciano Famiglia. He was a cunning middle-aged man, as shrewd as they come. He processed my proposal in silence for a long time before sa
