Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Space Journey
After I was done giving instructions to Clifford, I lay in bed and finally slept soundly for the first time in 20-something years.

When I opened my eyes again the next day, it was already noon.

I groggily reached for my phone on the bedside table and realized that my phone was brimming with countless abusive text messages and unknown missed calls.

While wondering who it could be playing such a prank on me, I went online and saw that the hashtag, "#evilDebbieEverett", was trending on social media. I clicked in and saw a snippet of Albert and Thelma tearfully accusing me of abuse on a television interview.

Thelma wiped her tears away on-screen, and her withering hands trembled uncontrollably.

Albert said, "We don't want anything from Debbie. We don't even expect her to pay for our medical treatment. We just want our home back."

He then proceeded to cough so hard that he couldn't even straighten himself up anymore.

"Our son is dead. We have nowhere to go, and we're truly desperate now. We can only place our hope in the law to reclaim our legal rights."

Albert then showed the camera a court summons for a hearing that was scheduled in seven days. He finally said emotionally, "If Debbie is willing to repent within the next seven days, then we will still acknowledge her as our daughter-in-law, and we will still be a supportive family to her."

The comment section under the video exploded with thousands of comments from the netizens.

"How could such a heartless woman even exist? This kind of person deserves to rot in hell!"

"That poor old lady! I felt so sorry for her that I nearly cried!"

"Doxx this ungrateful woman! Expose all her details online! We must get justice for the old couple!"

There was even a truckload of kind-hearted people who offered to raise money to pay for Albert's and Thelma's medical bills.

I scrolled through the horrible comments bordering on cyberbullying me. Then, I yawned in boredom before tossing my phone aside and putting on my skincare products while sipping on red wine.

Over the next few days, I kept receiving a lot of hate mail and hate packages in my mailbox, like voodoo dolls, dead rats, and even threatening notes. Some people had even edited my photo onto a tombstone and spread it online.

I also got a call from my boss, Paul Blackwell, who subtly informed me that the scandal and hateful comments were starting to affect the company as well, and he suggested that I take a temporary leave of absence until it all died down.

I just told him that I would resign. I spoke without hesitation and readily headed out to the company to file the resignation paperwork.

A group of nosy influencers, who were livestreaming, caught me outside my house and swarmed around me.

"Ms. Everett! Don't you feel any remorse for abusing your in-laws like this?"

"Remorse?" I asked. "Why would I feel any remorse? They're just a pair of insufferable, undead monsters who would be much better off dead. They're such a waste of food and oxygen.

"If you feel sorry for them, then you have my blessing to bring them home with you so you can care for them instead!"

My shocking statement instantly provided these nosy influencers with a surefire way to generate more traffic on their livestreaming platforms. At once, they got even more excited and practically shoved their cameras and phones in my face. They filmed my every movement.

I pushed my way through the crowd and suddenly turned around to face them with a smile.

"The court hearing is in three days. I'll see all of you there!"

Sounds of suppressed sobs drifted from the gallery.I turned to look and saw Thelma slumped over in her seat with tears streaming down her wrinkled face.Meanwhile, Albert was staring intently at Matt, whom he had raised so carefully for years. His murky eyes finally welled up with tears of resentment and regret."Take him away!" the judge demanded. As the bailiffs led Matt away, he suddenly turned back and grinned maliciously at me."Did you think you've won, Deborah Everett? You'll carry the stigma of almost being sent to the psychiatric hospital for the rest of your life!"I adjusted my collar a little, revealing a silver brooch on the left side of my chest. It was the symbol of courage that had been awarded to me by the women's rights organization."I will carry this symbol with me to help more women avoid abusers and gaslighters like you," I said.As the police cars sped away, I reached into my pocket for my recent health check-up report from the hospital. The doctor had

The lights in the courtroom were a harsh, glaring white.Matt stood in the defendant's dock in handcuffs. His wrinkled suit was a far cry from his former grace and eliteness. As the judge read the final verdict, Matt's face slowly contorted in horror before he completely crumbled."Matt Blanchard, you are hereby sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment due to multiple charges of fraud, forgery, intentional assault, and many more."Laura nearly collapsed to the ground when she heard it, but the bailiffs held her up.Meanwhile, Matt suddenly flew into a rage, his handcuffs clanging loudly against the bars as he roared, "It's all your fault!"He glared at his parents in the gallery as his eyes bulged from their sockets. "If you didn't suddenly get a heart attack and had to be hospitalized, and if you never let that bitch, Deborah, catch you red-handed, none of this would have happened!"Albert clutched at his heart and leaned back in terror, while Thelma's lips trembled as if this was

The camera flashes went off again.I was still standing before the cameras, but I was no longer wearing the faded, worn-out sweater. Instead, I was wearing a beige-colored suit this time. The reporters swarmed around me, holding out their microphones toward me. This time, though, there were no sharp questions, malicious speculations, or hostile insults—only gentle encouragement and restrained respect."Ms. Everett, may we know what your plans are for the future?"A young female reporter asked me that question, and her eyes were sparkling with genuine concern for me.I smiled lightly at her as my gaze swept over the rest of the audience below the stage. There were no more radical netizens holding up signs demanding that I be put to death anymore. Instead, I could see several young women holding up sunflowers and waving them at me in encouragement.I spoke in a clear yet gentle voice."I will continue living just like a normal person."Just three months ago, my social media acco

Matt stormed into the ward with four or five doctors in white coats and two police officers. His eyes were bloodshot, and he pointed at me at once, shouting, "It's her! She's the one who wanted to kill my parents! Arrest her!"Before I could even react, two doctors had grabbed me by my arms, one on each side. One of the doctors, who was wearing gold-rimmed glasses, shouted at the top of his lungs, "The patient's condition has deteriorated rapidly! She must be admitted to the psychiatric hospital at once, no matter what!"Thelma's face fell. She threw herself at the police officer, wailing, "Help us, officer! Debbie just pulled out my husband's oxygen tube! She always goes berserk every time she has a mental breakdown, and nobody can ever stop her!"It was only then that I noticed that Albert's oxygen mask had been torn off, and it was now lying to the side.I also realized that a mysterious syringe had just appeared inside my bag too!"The evidence is conclusive! She just confess

The ward reeked of disinfectant and a hint of malice and hostility.Albert lay in bed. The ECG monitor was beeping steadily next to him while showing alarmingly high numbers for his blood pressure. Yet, his eyes were eerily clear and bright.Thelma was sitting next to him on the bed, holding a stack of documents in her hand with such a tight grip that her knuckles turned white. It looked like she was clutching them like they were her lifeline."Debbie, I was wrong…"She suddenly spoke in a soft, trembling voice. Her eyes instantly reddened as if she'd rehearsed it a thousand times before. She tried to hold my hand, but I avoided her. Yet, she didn't seem mad at that. She just lowered her head and wiped away her nonexistent tears before handing me the documents in her hand."I'm sorry for letting you down. I never should have hidden this medical report from you," she continued, sounding a little sorry for me.I looked at the documents and read the title. It was a mental illness

When Matt appeared at the hospital payment counter wearing a crumpled Target shirt, even the nurses there couldn't help but glance at him a couple of times. After all, he was someone who used to wear nothing but Armani shirts every day. He wasn't even wearing an Apple watch on his wrist anymore, and the wallet that he took his bank card out from still had the Goodwill price tag stuck on it."Paying for the full bill?" the cashier asked, typing away on her keyboard."Just for three days first, please."Matt stared at the six-figure amount displayed on the card machine and gulped. His Adam's apple bobbed as he'd just swallowed very hard. This was the money he got from selling his Patek Philippe watch, Hermes belt, and even Laura's Van Cleef necklace at a steep discount.Albert, who was still situated in the VIP ward after having undergone heart stent surgery, angrily disconnected the monitor from himself and pulled out the IV needle. Blood beaded on his skin."You idiot! Who told
