Chapter 2

作者: Washing Wheat
When Alex finished, Hazel wrapped her arms around him, and they broke down in tears.

The gallery exploded with fury.

"That's right! We're all witnesses! Let him be when he gets old!"

I clenched my fists, forcing myself to speak. "I didn't cheat. The court will deliver nothing but justice."

The man I had grown up with hurled a water bottle straight at my head. "Justice? Please. You've been cutting corners your whole life. Everyone knows!"

That was enough to ignite the room. Bottles flew toward me from every direction, and the courtroom descended into chaos.

Several bottles struck me square in the forehead. I clutched my head and crouched down. My chest convulsed with pain, my breath came in gasps, and I crumpled to the floor, groaning.

Hazel noticed my heart condition was acting up and rushed over. She waved frantically at the crowd. "Stop! Please stop. No matter what, he's still my husband."

Her words only made things worse.

Someone in the gallery shouted, "He's an animal! Don't pity him, Hazel!"

Court security quickly restrained those who had lost control.

When the crowd finally settled, I was lying on the floor, my body twitching.

"Dear, are you alright?" Hazel kneeled beside me, pressing her hands against my chest, shaking me desperately. "Please be okay! I'll agree to the divorce, alright? Your well-being is all that matters!"

Alex pulled her away. "Mom, let him be."

"No matter what, he's still your father."

"No. He's not my father. He doesn't deserve to call himself that," Alex answered and pulled her aside.

My hands shook as I took out the emergency heart medication from my pocket and swallowed it.

Once the order was restored, the guards in the court helped me up.

"Order!" the judge said. "Any further disruptions will be punished. The trial will now begin. The plaintiff, Bryan Zimmer, and the defendant, Hazel Cooper, prepare to proceed!"

I forced myself upright and returned to the plaintiff's table.

Hazel wiped her tears and slowly moved to the defendant's side. "So all these years together don't mean a thing compared to a few words from that woman?"

I pressed a hand to my chest, memories surfacing one after another.

Indeed, she had taken care of everything—home, family, all of it. I was always away, either away on business or sent to another city for work.

The gallery had settled down, but the muttering and taunts continued.

"Go through with it, Hazel. You'll win! Choose the death penalty and be done with him."

"That's right. Alex has a bright future. Don't waste your life on a lousy man like him!"

Hazel hesitated. Tears slid down her face as she looked at me. "If you withdraw the case, we can go back and be together again. If you lose the case, you'll suffer terribly."

The people in the gallery groaned in frustration.

"Hazel is too kind! That's how he keeps taking advantage of her."

Suddenly, I stood. I clutched the bottle of pills tightly and uttered through clenched teeth, "I agree! Let the death penalty be the punishment!"

Laughter rippled through the room.

"Another man rushing to his own grave. Might as well sit back and enjoy the show."

Hazel let out a long sigh and tightened her grip on Alex's hand. "If that's the punishment you've chosen, then I accept it."

The judge struck the gavel. "Both parties have agreed on the same consequence. Death will be imposed on the losing side. The trial will now proceed."

Court staff rolled in the memory extraction equipment.

Hazel straightened, putting on a brave face. "I consent to the public release of my extracted memories. I ask the court to judge fairly."

The judge nodded. "The court will conduct a fair and transparent trial. All proceedings are subject to review."

"Alright. What's done is done. Study hard. I'll support you through college. Once you're earning your own money, you can pay me back for your education," I said to Alex. His hand trembled as he placed it in mine, feeling the warmth in my palm. He didn't say a word and followed me out of the courtroom. The light beyond the doors brushed past my weakened frame and fell on him instead. He quickly wiped his eyes and hurried over, taking my arm as we left the darkness behind.…Alex's Point-of-ViewMy name was Alex Cooper.Growing up, people always called me a child without a father.Whenever they shouted that no one wanted me, that I was an orphan, I fought them. I insisted I had a father. It was simply that he was busy with work and always traveling.Over time, the other kids stopped hanging out with me. I grew quiet, withdrawn. I poured everything into studying instead. My father was always busy, and my mother didn't seem to like me either.Whenever she finished one of her phon

Hazel continued, "I named my son Alex to make sure he always remembers who his real father is!"Alex stared at Hazel in horror, shaking his head before dropping to his knees. "My mother killed my grandmother… How could this have happened? Why?""Why? She did raise you, but why did you get attached to her? You're not related to her by blood!" Hazel yelled.Alex looked at her in disbelief, unable to reconcile this with the mother he thought he knew.Hazel's crazed ranting ignited public outrage even further. This time, no one laid a hand on her. Instead, they mocked her."You got pregnant out of wedlock. Do you not know shame?""No one here is on your side today. Don't forget, you're facing the death penalty."Hazel seemed to have just realized it, and her expression changed instantly. She began crying and begging, "Bryan, you wouldn't just let me die, right? We've been together for so long. If I die, who's going to take care of Alex?"I let out a cold laugh, amazed she had the g

Someone gasped. "W-What? Murder Bryan?""I knew Hazel was up to no good. She used us to stir things up and drown Byran in public outrage. What a vicious woman!"The moment Hazel heard that, she denied it outright. "I didn't! Don't accuse me falsely!"I sneered and met her gaze head-on. "Didn't you? You know exactly what you did."She immediately looked away, unable to meet my eyes.Court staff brought over the equipment and extracted another segment of my memory. It didn't take long for the footage to appear on the large screen. The scene was unmistakably from earlier in the courtroom.I was arguing my case, clearly losing ground. Egged on by James, everyone turned on me, rising as one and hurling water bottles. The courtroom dissolved into chaos. Several bottles struck me square in the forehead. I clutched my head and crouched down. My chest convulsed with pain, my breath came in gasps, and I crumpled to the floor, groaning.Hazel noticed my heart condition acting up and rush

Hazel's face tightened, eyes wide, her voice caught in her throat. After a while, she muttered, "That's impossible. How could you have proof?"Alex was visibly shaken. "Was it really you? Did you really do it?"People said that Alex was raised by Hazel alone, but that was hardly true. He was raised by my mother. Hazel spent most of her time indulging herself. The one who actually took care of him was my mother. The judge immediately projected all of my photo and video evidence onto the screen.Every single photo showed Hazel meeting men in secret, behaving shamelessly and unrestrained. Most of them were with the man she publicly called her brother-in-law.After that came the photos with James and Joel. The indecent images made several people in the gallery bow their heads in embarrassment.Hazel stared at the screen, then suddenly screamed hysterically, "Stop it! Stop it now! You're not allowed to show any more!"But the judge had no reason to listen to her.The video from my U

Someone in the gallery scoffed. "Didn't someone say that man was Hazel's brother-in-law?""Hazel's an orphan. How could she have a brother-in-law? Alex definitely knew. Back then, he never addressed him as his uncle."Alex panicked and rushed to defend himself. "I didn't know any of this. I swear, I really didn't."Hazel immediately backed him up. "I kept everything to myself. Alex knows nothing. And don't listen to Bryan's nonsense. I didn't kill his mother. I can barely lift anything. How could I possibly kill someone?"The moment she said that, several of Hazel's most loyal supporters in the gallery jumped to her defense. One said, "Exactly. Even if she did some things wrong, that doesn't mean she broke the law."I let out a cold laugh and asked the judge to continue playing the memory clips. "Whether she did or didn't, you'll see for yourselves."The judge nodded and resumed the playback. This was a more recent memory, from the banquet celebrating Alex's college admission.

  • Wife v. Husband   Chapter 5

"Hazel, are you feeling better?" I asked.Hazel's face was downcast. "Why are you back? Didn't you say you were on a business trip?"I wiped the sweat from my brow and glanced at the tiny baby nestled in the crib beside her. I smiled and replied, "Of course I'd come back. You just gave birth to our child."She launched into a barrage of questions, worried I wouldn't secure the bonus. "And the business deal? Will they penalize you? What about the bonus?"I didn't notice anything unusual, thinking she was merely irritable from just having the baby. "Don't worry. I told my boss you were in labor, and he let me leave immediately. He even gave me a generous monetary gift."I pulled an envelope from my pocket and handed it to her, then slipped a gold necklace around her neck. "Thank you for everything, honey."Hazel's expression softened after that. "Alright. Help me bring the baby over to the bed. And you—go rinse your face first. You're dripping with sweat. Don't get it on the baby."
