Chapter 4

Autor: June Wilder
Elias looked panicked and quickly covered Zoe's mouth.

I gave a dry, self-mocking smile.

"The terms are all in there. You get the child. I only want what is rightfully mine. Ms. Holden, isn't this exactly what all of you wanted?"

Something flickered behind Naomi's eyes.

Elias began to cry softly. "Naomi, this is all my fault. I'll move out. Please don't be upset with Wyatt..."

Naomi took a deep breath and pushed the alarm out of her eyes.

She picked up the agreement, gave it a glance, and sighed. "Wyatt, you know how I work. Everything has a price."

She slid the agreement back across the desk, her gaze steady.

"If you go to St. Callen's Monastery in the next town and bring back a blessed medallion for Elias, I will sign these papers on the spot.

"The catch is that St. Callen's requires you to kneel at every step, all 999 of them, before they will give you one.

"You've never been one for hardship. If you'd rather not, then—"

"Fine," I cut her off before she could finish.

I put the agreement back in my bag and turned to leave.

Naomi froze.

She probably had not expected me to agree so easily, without even taking the out she had so carefully built into the deal.

"Let him go, Naomi!"

Dad's voice came from behind me. "He's been spoiled rotten since the day he was born. Let's see how long this little tantrum lasts."

I did not look back.

I was not getting that medallion for Elias.

It was for my own freedom.

Once I had it, Naomi would sign the agreement, and I could sever every last tie to all of them.

The closer I got to the neighboring town, the darker the sky became.

A severe storm warning flashed across my phone screen, and I tightened my grip on the steering wheel instinctively. The fever felt like it was surging back.

The rain came down in sheets. The radio kept warning about dangerous road conditions, but there was no turning back now.

St. Callen's sat high in the mountains. The winding road up had turned to mud under the downpour.

A truck came barreling around the bend from the opposite lane, completely out of control.

Its high beams blinded me. I wrenched the steering wheel hard, and the car slammed into the guardrail.

Everything went red.

The airbag pinned me in place. I used the last of my strength to fumble for my phone. Zoe's call came in at that exact moment.

"Zoe, call an ambulance for me... I've been in an accident."

Her voice came through flat and impatient on the other end.

"You're lying again. Mommy's right. You're just a bad man who likes to make trouble over nothing.

"I'm not calling because I care about you. I'm calling to tell you that you'd better bring that medallion back. The sooner you do, the sooner you can get out of the way and make space for Eli."

The line went dead. The phone screen flickered twice and went dark.

As my consciousness slipped away, I felt something close to relief.

There was no one left in this world waiting for me to come home, so maybe it was all right to just let go.

...

Elias had only mentioned a slight discomfort in his chest, and Naomi had treated it like a full-blown emergency, rallying everyone around him and rushing him into an exam room.

Now, she stood in the hospital corridor, staring at her phone in frustration as the call failed to connect for what felt like the hundredth time.

"Still can't get through to Wyatt?" Cassie walked over and handed her a cup of coffee.

"Elias is fine, by the way. The doctor said he just needs rest."

Naomi shoved the phone back into her pocket, her expression cold. "Forget it. He'll come crawling back once he's done sulking."

The words had barely left her mouth when hurried footsteps echoed from the far end of the corridor.

A team of paramedics came sprinting past, pushing a gurney at full speed.

The person on the stretcher was covered in blood, with an oxygen mask strapped over his face.

Naomi stepped aside to let them pass.

As the gurney brushed by her, a drop of blood splashed onto her shoe.

Her phone buzzed again. She snatched it up, but it was not my number. It was an unfamiliar landline.

"Hello, is this a family member of Wyatt Raines?

"This is the emergency department at Ridgeview General. Mr. Raines has been in a serious car accident. He's currently in critical care. We need you to come in immediately to sign the consent forms."

  • Wind, Rain, and the Years Between Us   Chapter 10

The day before I left the city, I went back to St. Callen's.A year ago, I had crashed my car on the road leading up to this place and nearly died in the pouring rain. Now, the sky in fall was clear and bright, and sunlight filtered through the gaps in the leaves, falling in patches across the stone steps.I lit a candle at the altar. I did not pray for love or for wealth. I only asked for peace in whatever years I had left.I had barely stepped out of the chapel when I saw Naomi standing at the bottom of the steps. She looked worse than the last time. Her hair was tangled, and she was clutching a red blessed medallion in her fist. The moment she saw me, she staggered up the stairs."Wyatt..." She dropped to her knees in front of me, her voice wrecked. "I got the medallion. You said if I brought it back, you'd forgive me."Her hands were trembling as she held it out to me.I looked at the medallion that had been stained with sweat and dirt."Ms. Holden, you're remembering

I heard about Elias' ending from Cassie. After Naomi cut him off for good, he fled to some rural backwater to hide from the loan sharks. They found him anyway.During a scuffle, he fell down a flight of stairs, broke his leg, and triggered his old condition. He had no money for treatment and no one willing to help. The last anyone heard, he was bedridden in a rented room, surviving on handouts from neighbors."Wyatt, I'm so sorry. I really am. If I hadn't helped them cover up what happened, you never would've gone through all of this."I was watering the succulents on my balcony. The sun was warm on my skin."Dr. Raines," I cut off Cassie's apology. "What's done is done. Going forward, let's just be distant relatives. I'll send you a text on the holidays."The line went quiet for a long time, then came a single bitter sigh."All right. I respect your decision."After I hung up, Ava came out of the kitchen carrying two mugs of warm milk. "Dealing with more of that mess?"

I moved into a studio apartment that Ava had helped me find. It was far from the city center, but it was quiet.Naomi did not come pounding on my door. She found another way into my life instead. Every morning, a breakfast I had apparently loved would appear at the security booth. Every evening, a handwritten letter would be stuffed into my mailbox. She wrote about eating the fondant cake I had left behind, having an allergic reaction to the peanuts in it, and ending up in the emergency room that same night. She wrote about sending Zoe to boarding school because the girl was still calling me a bad man. She wrote about kneeling in front of Dad and Cassie and demanding they answer for what they had done to me.I locked every letter, unopened, in a drawer. I threw every breakfast in the trash.A month later, it was my birthday.Ava booked a quiet restaurant and sat with me while I cut a small cake."Make a wish."Ava lit the candle, her gaze warm.I closed my eyes and clasp

Mr. Gentry did not come alone. When the doorbell rang, Naomi was trying to slide the wedding ring back onto my finger. I pulled my hand away and went to answer the door.Standing outside next to Mr. Gentry in his tailored suit was Ava Lennox. Back in college, Ava was a year ahead of me. We later worked together at a design firm before she moved abroad to start her own company. She happened to be back in the country when I had the accident and recognized me at the hospital."Wyatt."Ava was wearing a simple white blouse and carrying a small thermos bag. She did not ask how my recovery was going. She just held out the bag, as naturally as if she had done it a hundred times before."Butterscotch pudding from that old bakery on the south side. Less sugar, no cinnamon. I know you hate it."I blinked, then took it from her. "Thanks, Ava."Naomi came out of the living room. The moment she saw Ava, her eyes went cold."Who are you?"She strode over to my side and reached for my

The day I was discharged, Naomi drove me home. The house was full of traces Elias had left behind.A pair of dark gray slippers by the front door, a designated mug on the coffee table, and his favorite gardenias on the balcony. Naomi scrambled to shove them all into the trash."Wyatt, those were all things the housekeeper picked up. I'll have everything replaced by tomorrow."I gave them a passing glance. "It's fine. However you'd like to handle it, Ms. Holden."Ms. Holden.Naomi went rigid. She turned to face me, a flash of pain in her eyes. "Wyatt, you used to call me Naomi.""Did I?" I walked over and sat down on the couch, my tone pleasant but detached. "I suppose it'll take some time to adjust."Over the days that followed, Naomi cancelled every engagement and came home on time every evening to be with me. She tried to do what I had apparently done for years and stood in the kitchen making soup. She cut her finger slicing vegetables, rinsed it carelessly, and still b

The coffee cup slipped from Naomi's grip and crashed to the floor. She turned toward the emergency room doors that had just swung shut, unable to believe what she had just heard. She did not know yet that those doors had not only sealed off the doctors who were fighting for my life. They had also sealed off everything between us that could never be taken back. The red light above the emergency room stayed on for seven straight hours. Naomi stood outside the entire time. The blood on her shoe had dried to a dark brown.Cassie was holding my medical chart, her hands shaking so badly that she could barely keep the paper still. "How did this happen... How could he get into an accident..."Her voice cracked. "I just wanted him to be a little more considerate toward Elias..."Dad sat on a bench with his face buried in his hands, sobbing.Naomi stared at the sealed doors, her mind completely blank. She thought about how just a few hours ago, she had sent a voice message accusing
