LOGINChapter 6
BRYCE WINSTON
‘Mr. Charleston went on an emergency business trip this morning’
My fingers clenched around the steering wheel as I sped down the road.
Business trip? No. He can't leave. He's got to tell me where the hell my wife is before he leaves.
Lewis's text came in.
I'd asked him earlier to look into the country Nolan was traveling to since I wasn't able to get words out of his secretary at his law firm. For ‘confidentiality’.
‘I couldn't find anything either, Mr. Winston. I tried to use our source from the immigration service, but they couldn't find anything on Mr. Charleston or Mrs Winston’
I stepped on the brake pad and brought the car to a loud screeching halt, my eyes fixed on the text.
What's going on? How is it possible? Did they not leave the country? Or perhaps they left under a different name?
I squeezed my eyes shut and shook my head, swallowing the lump in my throat.
It's not possible. They couldn't have prepared a different name in twenty four hours.
Could it be the latter?
A sharp pain shot through my head, and I groaned, rubbing my temple.
Fuck! I might collapse if I don't get back to the hospital, but there's no way I'm going back without finding out where Nora is first.
I started the car and drove to the airport anyway. Who knows, I might be able to find something.
I got to the airport minutes later, and started searching through the terminal, combing my way through the crowd until my limbs were heavy and almost numb. Still, I didn't stop.
I stopped to catch my breath, and my phone suddenly started ringing.
Lewis.
I picked on the first ring.
“I found something, Mr. Winston."
“Speak."
“I got a call from our source at the immigration. He found out that the ticket was purchased privately—”
"Give me the details.”
There was silence on the other end for a moment, then, "There's no destination country on the ticket.”
"What?” My jaw dropped. "How is that possible?”
If there's no destination, then that means… He's with Nora.
I choked on my breath at the realization, my fingers curling into my palms.
Why is he going this far? Taking Nora away.
"I think Mr Charleston paid someone to do it. I don't know…" he sighed. “Something is weird."
“Why are you looking into Mr. Charleston by the way? Did something—"
“I don't care how you're going to do it, Lewis. Find something. Anything." Then I ended the call before he could say anything else.
I continued searching around.
A few minutes later, I got another text from Lewis, saying he was sorry. He couldn't find anything else, and Nolan’s flight took off thirty minutes ago.
My knees buckled, and I stumbled, but quickly held the nearest rail for support.
I stared at the text, my heart leaping in my throat. It felt like I was watching my life crumble before my eyes.
Is Nora really gone? Is this the price I have to pay for how I treated her?
Pain exploded through my head, and I let out a wince, holding my forehead as I stumbled back and forth.
“Mr? Are you okay?" A faint voice echoed in my head before my eyes caught the blurry figure of someone standing before me.
"Are you sick? Do you need to go to the hospital?” The person asked, placing a hand on my shoulder.
I blinked and shook my head, trying to snap out of it.
My vision cleared for a moment, and I managed to stand on my feet.
“Thank you. I'm fine.” I managed to say, shrugging the stranger's hand off before dragging myself away.
I got to my car and breathed out shakily, my hands trembling on the steering wheel.
A few minutes had passed before I drove off.
I got home and paused in the foyer as Nora's beautiful smile welcomed me.
“Nora?" My voice cracked barely above a whisper. “Is that really you?"
“Honey… You're home…” She walked up to me with that smile she always had on each time I came home.
“Did something happen? You look pale.” Her eyes swept over me with worries.
“I'm not seeing things, right?" My lips trembled as I moved closer to her, my hands already moving to touch her. "No…ra. I'm sorry. I…”
"I'm sorry…" I closed the distance between us and as I lurched forward to hug her, my arms closed around nothing, and I dropped to the floor with a loud thud.
I lifted my gaze. Nora was not there. It was just myself.
I opened my mouth and closed it back, tears burning at the sides of my eyes.
“Honey… Why are you still there? Come on, dinner is ready.” I was barely getting over what just happened when her voice came from the dining room, and even though I already knew it wasn't real, I stood up and stumbled forward.
My legs stilled in the living room, fingers curling tightly into my palms as I watched her set the table like she always does.
She paused and looked at me, grinning from ear to ear.
“I made your favorite food, honey. You'll love it." She chuckled, beckoning on me to come over.
A drop of tears slid down my cheek, and I quickly wiped it with the back of my palm.
"You are not real… You are a fake. Stop messing with my head, please.” I whispered, but still, I found myself moving towards her, part of me hoping she was real. That I could touch her even if it was just for a second.
I reached out to touch her face, and just like that, she faded into thin air.
My hand dropped to the chair before I dropped to the floor and stared at nothing.
I don't love her?
I scoffed. If I didn't, why the fuck does it hurt this much? Why do I feel like I'm about to die without her here?
What a fucking joke. I've been lying to myself for years.
Yes, I deserve this. Every bit of the pain, but how long do I have to endure this? It's only been twenty-four hours and it already feels like I'm about to die.
My phone buzzed, and I hesitated before reaching for it.
Sandra;
‘I just got discharged from the hospital. Can I come over to your place? I'm scared I would fall sick again if I stay alone’
Anger rose in my throat as I read the text…
Chapter 41NORA CARTER ‘I don't know how I'm going to do it, but I will earn your forgiveness. I have to’I scoffed and rolled my eyes.Earn my forgiveness? After everything he's made me pass through years ago? He must think that I'm a fool.I'm never going to forgive him. It doesn't matter what he does or the effort he puts into it. He can go to hell for all I care.My phone chimed, disrupting my thoughts.A smile spread across my face when I saw it was Nolan.‘Hey. I'm sorry I didn't reach out all day. I've been busy’Nora: It's fine. I understand. How's work?Nolan: Not bad. Should we have dinner together tomorrow? I discovered a nice place.I blinked at the screen.“Dinner together? Is he back in the country?" Nora: Are you back?Nolan: First flight tomorrow. I'll come pick you up after work, so don't drive to the office.I stared at the screen for a moment, then smiled and replied to his text.We stayed on the phone for a few more minutes before I finally got off and went into
Chapter 40NORA CARTER I shouldn't have agreed to drive Bryce home, but I did anyway.I couldn't have left him there or allowed him to drive himself after he'd practically begged me to drive him.I glanced at him and sighed almost quietly. He looked sick. Far worse than what any stress could cause, and yet the doctor insisted it was stress? Why do I have a feeling that he was mistaken? Maybe something else was wrong with him? Besides, it wasn't the first time he was going to collapse. For a second, I almost asked about his health, but brushed the thought off, and told myself there was no need.I didn't have a reason to ask.“Thank you for today." He broke the awkward silence. "I told you that you didn't have to take me to the hospital. It wasn't something serious.” I glanced at him and scoffed. Not something serious? Who knows, maybe something terrible would've happened if I'd listened to him not to go to the hospital.“Next time, don't collapse around me or where I can see you." I
Chapter 39BRYCE WINSTONThe pain in my head had reduced when I opened my eyes, but my body was still weak.A low groan tore from my throat as I rubbed my eyes gently.Fuck! Why do I always have to fall sick in front of her?I heard the door creaked open, and I sat up as Nora walked in.She paused, her eyes sweeping over me once before she rushed over to me.“Hey." She sat on the bed, her eyes scanning me. “Are you okay? How are you feeling? The doctor said that you would be fine after a long sleep. Do you feel better now?" That was when I noticed that it was already evening.“How long have I been sleeping?" She glanced at her wristwatch, and back at me. "About six hours.”Shit! That's the longest I've slept in years.I ran my fingers through my hair, squeezing my eyes shut."Do you need me to get the doctor?”"No. I'm fine.” I forced a smile, and she nodded. My eyes narrowed as something suddenly crossed my mind.No. She can't find out what's wrong with me."Did the doctor tell yo
Chapter 38NORA CARTER “We got two offers from top-tier companies, Ms. Carter. They're both worth at least two billion dollars. What do we do?” I almost screamed at the top of my voice when I heard Xavier's voice over the phone. Before I left Canada, I'd handed my company to a trusted friend I'd own when I just got into this business.Xavier had been Nolan's close friend for years. He'd introduced us to each other when I left the country. We both had the same dream, and we clicked right away.We started Dynasty Holdings together as a small real estate company, with me as the President, being the one with more knowledge, and Xavier as the vice President.“You know we can't lose this, Ms. Carter. This is a life-changing opportunity for us. For the company." Yes! That would change the future of Dynasty Holdings entirely. There's no way I'm letting this go.“The CEOs of the two companies would love to meet in person and discuss the project as soon as possible." “I would've loved to go
Chapter 37BRYCE WINSTON I stared at Lewis for a moment, trying to process what he just said.He sighed.“I didn't mean to look into her, Sir, but you left me with no choice." He said. “You keep thinking about her, so I got curious and did my background check on her." I opened my mouth and closed it back.“I'm sorry if it offended you." He sighed. “It's just that I didn't like how constantly sad you were. Trust me, I mean no harm. I was trying to check if things could work out between you two…" “You've been to almost third blind dates in the last seven years yet none ever clicked, and the chairman has been on your neck to get married, so—”"So, you're saying she's not seeing anyone at the moment?” I cut him off.It didn't matter to me that he secretly looked into her when I didn't ask her to. At least not now.“You… are not mad at me, Sir?”Mad at him? Is this even the time for that?“Tell me everything you know, Lewis.” I held his hand, squeezing it tightly. "From the moment you s
Chapter 36BRYCE WINSTON “Hi, uncle." Finn's bright smile welcomed me the moment I pulled the door open.“Hey, Finn? You're here." He nodded.“Can I come in?" “Oh, yes. Sure." I opened the door wide for him, and he walked in.I followed him inside.“Did you sneak out of the house again?" He turned to me and nodded.“Mommy was taking a nap, so I snuck out to come and see you." “That's not nice, Finn." I went to sit on the couch. “Your mom might be worried if she finds out that you left the house…" I reached for him and pulled him close, holding his shoulders, my eyes fixed on him.“And you can't go to anyone's apartment like this, alright? You can't trust anyone…" “Not all adults are nice and trustworthy.”He nodded. "I just came to say thank you for helping Mommy.”I raised a brow, confused. "What do you mean, Finn?”"I saw the news. You exposed the bad uncle.” He smiled. "I'm glad mommy has been smiling more now.”Oh. He was talking about Jasper."Didn't I tell you that I wo
