Chapter 2

Author: Skye Marin
Ronan stopped drying his hair and stared at me in disbelief. "Calista, what’s wrong with you? Is this really about what happened earlier?

"Brynn just likes to joke around. Besides, you threw cake at her, and she didn’t even hold it against you. Don’t push your luck just because you’re pregnant."

He turned as if to get into bed. I grabbed a pillow and hurled it at him.

"I’m not joking. You shoved me today. I almost lost my life and the baby. If Brynn matters more to you than your wife and child, then fine. I’ll step aside and let you have each other."

I turned away, twisting my body so I wouldn’t have to look at him anymore.

He was silent for a moment, then walked over and gently stroked my hair. "Calista, don’t be mad. I’m a CEO now. You embarrassed me in front of my friends. That hurt too. Tell you what, I’ll take you out tomorrow to relax. Let our son get out and see the world a little."

I had just opened my mouth to respond when his lips suddenly pressed against mine.

His eyes were gentle as he said, "It’s late. Get some rest. Staying up is bad for you and the baby."

Drowsy, I drifted off to sleep.

In the middle of the night, a noise from the bathroom woke me. I crept over quietly and heard a conversation that made my skin crawl.

"Good boy, sneaking a video call with me. Aren’t you afraid your wife will find out?"

Ronan sounded completely unconcerned. "Women are easy. Just say a few sweet things, and they calm down. I’ve got her wrapped around my finger now. I say jump, she asks how high."

Laughter came from the other end.

"No matter how impressive you act in front of others, you’re still just a well-behaved little pet for Daddy."

To my horror, Ronan actually barked—a low, obedient "woof, woof"—sending chills down my spine. It was like he was a completely different person from the serious, dignified husband I knew.

I didn’t sleep for the rest of the night.

Early the next morning, Ronan woke me. After breakfast, he said he was taking me out.

The moment I got into the car, a sharp scent hit me, and I couldn’t help sneezing. I noticed a lily-scented air freshener clipped to the vent. Since I was allergic to lilies, I reached out instinctively to throw it away.

Ronan reacted instantly and grabbed my wrist. "Don’t touch that! Brynn put it there because she said my car stinks. If she notices it’s gone next time, she’ll never let me hear the end of it."

Clearly, he had forgotten all about my allergy. Right now, Brynn was the only thing on his mind. He must have noticed my expression, because he put the air freshener back in place and tried to reassure me.

"It expires in a month anyway. We can throw it out then."

He drove me to a basketball court, parked, and led me inside hand in hand.

When Brynn saw us, she ran over and pinched Ronan’s chest.

"Looks like you've been training hard. Those pecs are rock hard. Get on the court and play with me. Let’s wipe the floor with these losers today."

Ronan immediately pulled clothes from his bag and changed on the spot, then guided me to sit down on the bench.

"Calista, let our son watch my skills. Think of it as prenatal education."

After a while, hives began spreading across my body. It had to be the fragrance from earlier.

I shouted desperately, "Ronan, I think I’m having an allergic reaction. Take me to the hospital!"

Brynn yelled across the court instead, "Ronan, pass the ball! Hurry! Daddy’s going to show you a monster dunk!"

Focused on the game, Ronan didn’t hear me at all.

Even as my eyelids grew heavy and slowly closed, he never once looked in my direction.

Seeing the situation turning against her, Brynn suddenly dropped to the ground and burst into tears."I wasn’t willing to do that. He forced me! He got close to me under the excuse of being my best friend, but secretly had ulterior motives. I’m the real victim here. Heaven knows who’s right and who’s wrong!"Ronan’s face flushed with rage. He kicked her hard. "You shameless woman. If you hadn’t used that ‘best friend’ act as a cover to seduce me little by little, do you think I would have ended up with you?"She put on a pitiful expression. "Everyone, judge for yourselves. Every time I didn’t want to be with him, he beat me and abused me like this."He finally snapped. Pulling out his phone, he opened a video. "Look, this is what she’s done to me. Every time it was to satisfy her twisted desires."As he spoke, he ripped off his shirt, revealing scars of all sizes across his body. "Every one of these was left by you. You’re a lunatic. You belong in a psychiatric hospital!"At that

I couldn’t be bothered to deal with him and told security to throw him out, but while they weren’t paying attention, he rushed inside.Holding the roses, he dropped to his knees in front of me."Calista, please give me one more chance. I can’t live without you."At that moment, one of the employees suddenly saw a news alert and shouted, "The Kade Group’s stock is crashing, and they’re facing massive debt!"President Virel, don’t let him fool you. He’s desperate now. He just wants to drain you dry. A scumbag like that is best avoided for life. He’s absolutely disgusting."Ronan shot the woman a furious glare. "This is between Calista and me. What does it have to do with you?"I answered decisively, "We’re divorced. We have nothing to do with each other anymore. Please stop harassing me."After hearing my rejection, his eyes filled with tears. "Please don’t treat me like this. Only after you left did I realize how much I love you. These days, I can’t sleep at night. You’re all I t

Ronan and Brynn immediately started fighting, and the people around them struggled to pull them apart. At that moment, I took photos out of my bag and held them up for the reporters to see. They showed him in the private karaoke room wearing nothing but his underwear. The camera flashes grew more intense, shutters clicking nonstop.I pointed straight at him."This is the CEO of the Kade Group secretly playing strip games with his so-called best friend."And the woman next to him, Brynn, is his affair partner. They’ve been involved for a long time."Employees nearby covered their mouths, whispering among themselves."He always acted like the perfect husband. Turns out it was all an act.""I never expected him to be this wild behind closed doors. You really can’t judge a person by appearances."Reporters shoved microphones toward him."Mr. Kade, care to explain this photo? How could a businessman of your stature be involved in something like this?""The woman in the picture ap

Ronan opened the folder. The moment he recognized his own handwriting, his eyes widened."How… how is this possible? When did I sign this?"Afraid he might tear up the agreement, I snatched it back and held it up for the reporters to see. They surged forward immediately. The divorce of a billionaire heiress was front-page material; there was no way gossip-hungry journalists would miss it.Brynn grabbed his shoulder. "Ronan, what are you scared of? Women are replaceable. No one will look down on you for it."It’s just a contract. If this deal falls through, there are others. You don’t have to hang yourself on a single tree."If you can’t stay at the top, then your bros will walk the hard road with you again."This time, he didn’t treat her words like gospel. Having built everything from nothing, he understood exactly how important this project was. And someone as obsessed with his career as he was would never willingly fall from the top.He shoved her aside, glaring at her impat

After Cassian finished speaking, another authoritative voice rang out."So you’re the animal who killed my grandson?"I turned and saw my father, Lucien Virel, stepping out from behind Cassian. The tension I had been holding in snapped instantly. I threw myself into his arms."Dad! You’re finally here. I missed you so much." I clung to him tightly, just like I had when I was little.Ronan sounded irritated. "Calista, you’ve really got nerve. Don’t think sharing the same last name means you can cozy up to President Virel just like that. He’s my biggest client today. You’d better step aside before you make him angry."Brynn picked up the miscarriage report from the floor and let out a disdainful laugh. "Calista, you’ve got some skill, getting the famous President Virel to put on this little show for you. Honestly ridiculous."She sauntered over to my father and said lazily, "President Virel, how much did she pay you? I’ll double it. I’m the vice president of Kade Group now."She

Brynn looked bashful as she slapped his back lightly. "That’s my good boy, always so loyal. Daddy won’t forget this. I’ll reward you properly later."Just as Ronan reached down and yanked off his underwear, I kicked the door open.I strode in, grabbed a glass of red wine, and hurled it straight at him. "You scumbag! Our son is dead because of you, and you’re still here flirting with another woman?!"Brynn immediately shielded him, chin lifted arrogantly. "Calista, what do you think you’re doing? He stood up for me. Anyone who goes after him is going against me."I let out a cold laugh, picked up another glass, and splashed it across her face. "You’re no better. Look at what you’re wearing. Anyone would think you’re for sale."Her expression twisted instantly. She clenched her fist and swung at me. "I respected you as his wife before, but don’t push your luck!"He shoved me hard. "Stop making a scene. And what’s this nonsense about our son being dead? Have you lost your mind? You’
