Chapter 8

Author: Blanc Ball
The wedding was lively, and nearly all the elites were present.

Cooper was dressed in a custom white suit and looked blissful as he held Jessica by the waist.

Jessica had changed into her wedding gown. Edgar thought she was simply stunning. Elegant, regal, and poised.

Time seemed to have favored her, leaving not a single mark on her face. 13 years had passed, yet she was just as beautiful as the day she had pulled him out of the wardrobe all those years ago.

His gaze lingered on her to indulge in a few more stolen moments. Only then did he step forward and present his wedding gift with both hands.

"Jess, congratulations on your marriage," Edgar said sincerely.

He truly wished her happiness and good health in the years ahead.

Jessica accepted the gift while casting a searching look at Edgar. Although she said nothing, a tumultuous emotion—something she couldn't allow to surface—seemed to churn wildly in her eyes.

Unfortunately, Edgar didn't see it.

After presenting the gift, he left the wedding quietly as he simply couldn't bear to witness Jessica marrying Cooper with his own eyes.

He didn't have that kind of strength. While he genuinely wished Jess well, he would never accept Cooper.

After leaving the wedding, Edgar went to the cemetery, where he laid one final bouquet of fresh flowers on his parents' graves.

"Mom, I think I finally understand why you chose to end your life. Living is so painful. Why didn't you take me with you? You hated Dad so much, but you took him. You said I was the one you loved most, yet you left me here alone."

The world was so vast, and suddenly he felt unbearably lonely. It seemed that no one had ever truly chosen him and loved him unwaveringly. Not even his mother.

"Never mind. If even you couldn't love me, Jess has already done more than enough. If you and Dad are watching from above, don't bless me. Bless her instead."

With that, Edgar bent down, planted a kiss on the gravestone, and turned to leave. He went to a restaurant and patiently waited for Jessica to join him for what would be his final birthday.

Fireworks erupted in the sky in the distance, their light bright enough to display large characters that read, "Congratulations Jessica and Cooper on your marriage!"

How extravagant. But admittedly, it was romantic.

Jessica was the type to spare no effort to pamper the person she loved. It was just a pity that the person she loved was never him.

As time ticked by, the laughter and noise from the direction of the wedding continued.

Even in the restaurant, people were animatedly discussing the event and marveling over how Cooper's wedding attire cost billions, adorned with real diamonds, and how Jessica had willingly splurged to invite his favorite singer to perform at their wedding.

Edgar listened quietly. The world was so vibrant, yet he was alone and isolated.

When it was finally 3:00 pm, he wondered if Jessica would be arriving soon.

An hour later, the appointed time had passed, yet Jessica was still nowhere to be seen. Perhaps, he thought, something had delayed her.

At 5:00 pm, the wedding had long since ended, and the restaurant patrons had stopped talking about it. However, Edgar still didn't see Jessica.

His phone buzzed with a notification. It was an Instagram post from Cooper.

"The wedding's done, and our honeymoon starts now. First stop, Sadores. Boarding the plane."

The photo showed two stacked plane tickets. The top one bore Cooper's name, and Edgar didn't need to guess to know whose name the bottom one bore.

The flight was scheduled to depart at 5:30 pm. At that moment, Edgar finally understood that Jessica wasn't coming.

The cake on the table had begun to melt. Edgar picked it up, his motions wooden and lifeless, and brought a piece to his mouth.

Why was the frosting salty? It tasted awful.

He forced himself to finish the cake, paid the bill, and left.

"Edgar, I wish you an unhappy birthday. May your death bring an end to your pain."

That was his birthday wish for himself.

Edgar drove to the cryonics lab. Inside, the staff were already waiting for his arrival. No one celebrated his birthday, but at least there were people to witness his death, even if they were strangers.

Reaching into his bag, he pulled out a letter and handed it to Harry. "If someone comes looking for me, give them this letter. If no one does… throw it away."

Nothing important was written anyway.

Harry accepted the letter. "I'll keep it safe."

Then, Edgar turned and walked toward the capsule that would become his coffin. He lay inside, just as he used to hide in the closet as a child whenever his parents fought to seek comfort in the cramped space.

The world was too vast and too complicated. He couldn't cope with it. So, he returned to his "wardrobe."

"All systems ready. Begin the cooling process."

At Harry's command, cold vapor enveloped Edgar, and he lost consciousness instantly.

Goodbye, Jess. Congratulations on your wedding.

Filled with curiosity, Edgar asked, "What did he say to you? Can you tell me about it?"Jessica leaned down and pecked his forehead, then began to recount the encounter from 50 years ago. After finishing the story, she couldn't help but sigh."It's been 50 years now. I wonder if that young man ever won over his neighbor."Before she could continue, the door to the break room was open. Accompanied by some of the researchers, the head of the research base entered with a walking cane. He was an elderly man with white hair, and though he was old, he appeared to be in great spirits."Ms. Yale, this is Mr. Adrian Scott, the head of our research base," one of the researchers introduced."The laser and steam activation method used on you and Mr. Lawrie for thawing was a concept proposed by Mr. Scott 40 years ago.""Is that so?" Jessica stepped forward and offered Adrian a respectful handshake. "Thank you for helping thaw both me and my lover."Adrian smiled warmly at Jessica. "Ms. Yale,

Edgar's health was relatively poor, and it took a long time for the side effects of the thawing process to gradually subside.During his rest, Jessica patiently explained everything that had happened since his freezing."So it was all a lie? Cooper wasn't your boyfriend at all? He was someone you paid to trick me?" Edgar blinked at her, and Jessica suddenly felt guilty."Edgar," she said, putting on a stern face and acting solemn. "That was 50 years ago! You're not seriously going to hold a grudge over something from 50 years ago, are you?""What 50 years? This was just yesterday!" Edgar huffed.Jessica took out a calendar and pointed to the year 2074. "It's already 2074. Cooper might have already passed away by now. You should just forgive him."Edgar was utterly confused. He thought, "What does Cooper have to do with this? You were the one who hired him to deceive me! Though Cooper had stirred up trouble and insulted my parents, you're the real culprit!"Edgar puffed up his c

"Thawing countdown begins."The electronic female voice echoed through the room, and everyone's breathing caught in unison."I heard that the one being thawed today is the major shareholder of our cryonics lab. Many of our research bases and cryonic capsule storage facilities were funded by her.""That's right. I also heard that she was a super-rich heiress. But her lover was diagnosed with a terminal illness, so she chose to freeze herself so she could be with him.""She's rich and so deeply in love. What an exceptional woman. Her lover is so lucky!"The new lab staff whispered among themselves.Over the past 50 years, the love story of Jessica and Edgar had become a legend within the cryonics lab. Multiple versions of the story had been passed around, with many details omitted.Nonetheless, the core of their love had moved countless people."Five. Four. Three. Two… One. Thawing begins."As the countdown ended, the machines activated, releasing a burst of strong white gas tow

Harry was hoping to persuade Jessica to abandon her decision to freeze herself. However, no matter how much he tried, Jessica only had the same response."No matter if thawing is successful in the future or not, I won't change my mind. I've missed him once. I won't miss him a second time."If, in the future, thawing was successful, she would reunite with him. If not, then she would accompany him through heaven or hell. The deep sea was dark and cold. Without her by his side, how would her little one survive?Harry had said all that he could. With a heavy heart, he brought the consent form for Jessica to sign.Following that, the medical check-up and selection of the cryonic capsule were completed seamlessly. Jessica finished all the procedures in one day with remarkable efficiency. However, she didn't undergo freezing immediately. Before the cryonics, she had a few final matters to arrange. She withdrew all her savings and gave them to Harry, instructing him to build a new cryon

"Ms. Yale, are you serious about this?" You want us to freeze you?" Harry exclaimed in shock.Jessica nodded and answered calmly, "Yes, that's correct. Starting today, I'll be the largest shareholder of your cryonics lab. Ten percent of my company's annual income will be invested into your research base to help you develop thawing technology."Ten percent might not sound like much, but her company's monthly net profit exceeded billions."Ms. Yale, we are very grateful that you're willing to provide funding. But cryonics is mainly intended for patients suffering from terminal illnesses," Harry explained patiently."Currently, there is no cure for conditions like cancer and multiple organ failure with today's medical technology. Many patients suffering from these terminal diseases are still very young."Rather than waiting to die slowly, they prefer to undergo cryonics in the hopes that, in the future, medical advancements will make it possible to cure their conditions and save them

Three days later, Jessica finally stood before Edgar, who she had longed for day and night.Edgar lay in the cryonic capsule with his eyes closed. His expression was peaceful and serene, as though he were merely sleeping.Staring at him, Jessica couldn't help but recall those countless nights when she had gently lulled him to sleep. He had always slept quietly in her arms like this, as beautiful as a doll. The only difference now was that even his lashes were covered in frost. His face was so pale. He must be terribly cold in the capsule."Edgar, don't be afraid. I'll be with you soon. I'm sorry that I lied to you." Jessica reached out to touch his pale cheek, but her hand met only the cold surface of the capsule. She couldn't touch him.Just as he had so many times tried to touch her heart, only to be turned away."Actually, Cooper was never my boyfriend. I never loved him. The one I've always loved… is you. But I couldn't admit it."I thought if I acknowledged my love for yo
