Chapter 3

Author: Through Meteorites
It wasn't long before Donald came home.

He was carrying a small jewelry box, which he carefully held out to me.

"Summer, buying the wrong ring was my fault.

"So I bought you a new one."

As he spoke, he slipped the ring onto my finger.

This time, it fit perfectly.

But when I lowered my eyes, I noticed a tiny engraving inside the band.

C & R.

Donald Cole and Cecily Reynauld.

I stared at the letters and let out a mocking smile.

Donald followed my gaze, and his expression stiffened for a split second.

"The salesperson must've given me the wrong one.

"Don't overthink it."

Just then, another receipt slipped out of the box.

I picked it up.

Same day.

Same jewelry store.

Donald had purchased two rings.

This one cost three times as much as the other.

In that instant, I understood.

The expensive ring engraved with his and Cecily's initials...

Had never been meant for me.

Donald paused before gently patting my head in reassurance.

"When we get married, I'll buy you another one."

Another one.

Next time.

There was always a next time.

Donald always believed every disappointment he caused could be made up for later.

Suddenly, I remembered the first trip we'd ever planned together.

I'd spent two full weeks putting together the perfect itinerary.

Which evening we'd watch the sunset.

Which seafood restaurant we had to try.

Which beach would be the quietest.

But on the day we left, I got to the airport only to discover...

My name wasn't on either plane ticket.

Donald stood there in stunned silence for a long moment before finally saying,

"I think I mixed up your ID information with Cecily's.

"The flights are booked, and the hotel isn't refundable.

"Summer, I'll take you next time."

That island vacation...

Ended with the two of them going without me.

Cecily posted photo after photo.

Golden sunsets.

Palm trees.

And one picture of Donald standing barefoot at the water's edge, carrying her sandals.

I remember staring at that photo, the sadness lingering for so long.

When Donald came home, all he brought me was a box of duty-free chocolates from the airport.

"Don't be upset," he said.

"I'll definitely take you next time."

Later, my favorite singer—someone I'd loved for years—finally came to town on tour.

Donald managed to get two seats together.

I was so excited I couldn't sleep all night.

But when we arrived at the venue, the attendant politely looked at the tickets and said,

"These tickets are registered to Mr. Cole and Ms. Reynauld."

Donald rubbed his forehead awkwardly.

"I mixed them up again."

In the end...

He and Cecily sat in the front row.

After the concert, Cecily posted a photo online.

She was leaning against Donald's shoulder, waving a glow stick.

She captioned: "Listening to my favorite songs with the person who knows me best."

I confronted Donald afterward.

He only sighed.

"Summer, you're reading too much into this.

"Cecily's your best friend. She's not a stranger.

"I couldn't just let her go to a concert by herself."

He always had an explanation.

And I was always expected to be the understanding one.

With that thought, I took off the new ring and placed it back into its box.

Then I turned and walked into the bedroom.

I began packing.

As I did, I realized...

There weren't actually that many things in this house that truly belonged to me.

The cashmere throw draped over the couch?

Cecily had once mentioned she'd get cold when visiting us in the winter.

Donald bought it the very next day.

When I reached my vanity, I spotted a silver bracelet inside the drawer.

It was Donald's birthday gift to me last year.

It cost a little over thirty dollars, and even the gift box had dented corners.

He'd smiled and said,

"It's the thought that counts. The price doesn't matter."

But for Cecily's birthday this year, he'd given her a custom-made necklace.

She'd carelessly tucked the receipt inside a book, and it had eventually fallen between the cushions of our couch.

$3,000.

More than ten times the price of my bracelet.

Even our refrigerator was stocked with Cecily's favorite low-sugar yogurt and fresh cherries.

The jasmine tea I liked had been gone for weeks.

I'd reminded Donald several times.

He always answered the same way.

"I'll pick some up next time."

Eventually, he never did "next time."

Donald stood in the bedroom doorway, watching me fold clothes into my suitcase.

For the first time, impatience crept into his voice.

"How long are you going to keep this up?

"I bought you another ring.

"I apologized.

"What more do you want?"

I quietly zipped up my suitcase.

Then I looked down and spoke in an almost whisper.

"Donald.

"There isn't going to be a next time."

He shoved the door open and stormed out.

I didn't go after him.

In my inbox, the confirmation email for the overseas long-term assignment sat quietly, waiting.

My flight was tomorrow.

Donald and I...

Would never have a next time again.

After that...I never saw Donald again.Years passed.I heard he never got married.I heard he sold the house we'd once shared.I heard that every year on my birthday, he bought a ring.Every one of them was the right size.Every one was engraved with my name. But in the end...They all remained locked away in a drawer.Never worn by anyone.Cecily left our hometown too.She used to post constantly on social media.Later, the updates became few and far between. Some people said she wasn't doing well.Others said she'd finally realized that affection that was never truly hers to begin with...Would eventually become the very thing that destroyed her.I never looked into it.My own life grew busier with each passing year. When the project ended, I was offered a permanent position.I finally had an office of my own.And I found new friends. One day, during a team dinner, someone was ordering dessert.A coworker casually asked,"Summer, are there any foods you can't eat?"Before I could an

Six months later...Donald came anyway.I'd just finished presenting at a project launch event. He was waiting outside the venue.Dressed in a black overcoat, he looked noticeably thinner. In his hands was a bouquet of white lisianthus. This time, he'd finally bought the right flowers. The moment he saw me, his eyes turned red."Summer."I stopped walking."What are you doing here?"He held the bouquet out to me, his voice rough with emotion."I know now."Your favorite flowers are lisianthus."Not roses."You love jasmine tea."You don't like osmanthus oolong."You hate crowded places, but you always went along with Cecily because of me."You weren't someone who never got angry."You just loved me too much."He spoke slowly. As if he were reciting answers he'd learned far too late.Listening to him, I found it almost laughable."Donald."What good does remembering all of that do now?"His eyes brimmed with tears."I know it's too late."But I really do see my mistakes now."Summer, pl

Later, I heard from our mutual friends...After returning home, Cecily completely fell out with Donald. She went to his company to confront him.Crying, she accused him of being responsible for losing her best friend. She demanded that he take responsibility. But in front of the company receptionist, Donald said,"Cecily Reynauld, we were never actually together."I was the one who failed to maintain proper boundaries."That won't happen again."Cecily broke down and threw her bag at him."Never together?"Donald, then why didn't you say that when you held me while we slept?"Why didn't you say that when you bought me a ring?"Why didn't you say that when you pushed Summer away to protect me?"The receptionist and the employees nearby heard everything. All the blurred lines they'd once hidden behind jokes...Were finally exposed by Cecily herself. The news spread quickly through their social circle.Cecily became the punchline of everyone's conversations. The project she had nearly use

A month later...Cecily came to see me.I had no idea how she found my address. When I saw her standing outside my apartment building, she was wearing a thin trench coat, her face pale and exhausted. The moment she saw me, tears began streaming down her cheeks."Summer..."I'm sorry."I stopped and looked at her.She was crying hard.Just like every other time she'd done something wrong. She knew that whenever she cried, I'd always forgive her.She knew that. That's why she'd always been so good at crying."Summer, I really didn't mean for any of this to happen."I was just afraid of losing both of you."You and Donald are the two most important people in my life."I never wanted to hurt you."I looked at her.For the first time, it all felt painfully ironic."Cecily."When you walked out of the bedroom wearing Donald's shirt..."Did you never once think that would hurt me?"Her face turned pale."That was just a misunderstanding.""What about joking that the ring was your size?"What

During my first week overseas, I was so busy that I barely had time to think about everything I'd left behind. The project moved at a relentless pace.Meetings started at eight every morning and often didn't end until ten at night.Everyone on the team was a stranger. No one knew I'd once had a boyfriend I was only steps away from marrying. No one knew my best friend had stolen the seven-year relationship we'd built together. And that was a good thing. For the first time...I didn't have to explain why I was unhappy.I didn't have to hear people say,"Cecily was only joking.""Donald was just being careless.""You're being too sensitive."That weekend, I went grocery shopping. As I passed a florist, I noticed a bouquet of white lisianthus displayed outside.I stopped walking. They were my favorite flowers.I'd told Donald that countless times. He always said,"Flowers wilt after a couple of days. It's a waste of money."Later, Cecily mentioned that she loved tulips. From then on, Donal

Cecily called while Donald was still standing outside my mother's apartment building. Her voice was soft, carrying the familiar note of wounded innocence."Donald, is Summer still angry?"Is she blaming me again?"Donald didn't answer. After a brief pause, Cecily spoke again, her voice trembling as though she were about to cry."My hand still hurts."The doctor said it might leave a scar."In the past, Donald would have rushed to her side without a second thought. But this time, he only asked hoarsely,"Cecily..."Why were you wearing my shirt that night?"Silence lingered on the other end of the line. Then Cecily let out a small laugh."You already know why."Mochi threw up all over my pajamas, so I just grabbed something to wear."You don't think I did it on purpose too, do you?"Donald slowly closed his eyes."Then why did you tell Summer that it wasn't the first time we'd slept together?"Cecily's voice quivered."I was joking."Haven't we always joked like that?"Donald tightened
