~Lyra's POV~

Arden woke on a Wednesday morning, three days after the last ritual session with Anders.

I wasn't in the healer's wing when it happened. Mama was. She had been there every morning since the battle, not keeping vigil exactly, just present, the way she was present for everything, quietly and without announcement and with the particular quality of someone who had decided where they were going to be and didn't require acknowledgement for it.

The runner found me in the east wing at half

  • Wolfless Luna Rebirth: The Alpha King's Lethal Queen    Mobilisation

~Lyra's POV~The war room at midnight had the particular atmosphere of people who have been awake too long making decisions that matter anyway.Cal had the Nightshade intelligence feeds overlaid on the tactical screen, the passive monitoring data that ran independent of Vivienne's house and had therefore not been compromised. The picture it was building was not good. Nightshade was moving. Not the city operation, not the alliance-facing capacity, but the deep infrastructure, supply chains, internal troop rotations, the communication patterns that preceded large-scale coordinated action.Kira was on secure video from the north, a small rectangle in the top corner of the tactical display, her face lit by the monitor in her own workspace."The movement patterns go back at least three weeks," Cal said. "What we saw starting this morning is the public-facing edge of something that's been building since before Vivienne was confronted."I looked at the feeds."He planned this while the Vivie

  • Wolfless Luna Rebirth: The Alpha King's Lethal Queen    Coming Home

~Lyra's POV~The gate was the right height for the dusk light. That sounds like a small thing and it is, but I noticed it when I came through, the way the amber evening light hit the stone pillars at an angle that made the compound look like itself rather than like something dramatic or imposing or worthy of a photograph. Just the Silverfang compound at dusk, doing what it did every evening, lit for function rather than effect.I stopped in the courtyard for a moment. Not for a reason. Just stopped. Let the place settle around me and breathed the air, which smelled like city and evening and the faint cold of a season turning, and let the six days at Silvercrest sit where they had landed.I was back.Xavier was on the low wall at the garden's edge, not at the door, not in a corridor, outside, which was an odd choice for waiting but a very specific one. He had a tablet in his hand and he was working, which told me he hadn't been standing at the window tracking my arrival. He had simply

  • Wolfless Luna Rebirth: The Alpha King's Lethal Queen    Next Move

~Ivan's POV~The eastern building's feed went dark at 3:14 AM.I was already awake when it happened. I had been at the desk in the eastern suite since two, reviewing the updated Nightshade territorial maps and the draft protocol for the accelerated operational phase, because sleep had not been available to me with the specificity that I required it.When the feed indicator dropped off the monitoring screen, I looked at it for a moment and then set down my pen.Not because I was surprised. Because I wanted to mark the moment properly. The loss of a six-month intelligence stream deserved a beat of acknowledgement before the loss assessment began.I gave it the beat. Then I started the assessment.----------Vivienne's house had provided the intelligence flow indirectly, not a direct arrangement between us, which would have created a trail too obvious for either party's comfort, but through the council's existing architecture. The council and I had what could be described as parallel int

  • Wolfless Luna Rebirth: The Alpha King's Lethal Queen    Mira

~Lyra's POV~I was already in my car before Mama picked up.Xavier was two floors behind me in the Silverfang building when I left, moving fast but not trying to stop me, he knew better, and he already had Cal on a separate line when I passed him in the corridor. The response team would be rolling within four minutes. I didn't need to wait for them. The phone connected on the first ring."Lyra." Mama's voice. Normal. Alert but not alarmed, she was awake, which at this hour meant she had been awake for a while, which meant she was doing the thing she did when she couldn't sleep, which was work. She was fine.I felt it and kept moving."Don't go anywhere," I said. "Lock the inner gates. I need you in the secure room.""Lyra, what…""Please," I said. "I'll explain when I get there. Inner gates and the secure room. Right now."A brief pause. Mama processed things fast, she always had. "All right," she said. "I'll have Dane's replacement unlock the secure room. How long?""Forty minutes,"

  • Wolfless Luna Rebirth: The Alpha King's Lethal Queen    Conversation

~Lyra's POV~We used the secure interrogation room on the third floor. Not because it was the most comfortable space, it wasn't. It was designed for exactly this kind of conversation, which meant it had no windows, two chairs across a table, and the particular atmosphere of a room that has been used for difficult things and carries the residue of that. We had told Vivienne there was an urgent intelligence briefing, which was true in every way except the word briefing. She came in the way she always came, laptop under one arm, coffee in her hand, the composed efficiency of someone who had been doing this for years and didn't require warm-up. She was wearing the dark jacket she usually wore for briefings. Her hair was the same. Her posture was the same. She stepped through the door and saw the room. She saw Xavier on one side of the table and me on the other and the specific way we were both already seated, not the arrangement of a briefing, the arrangement of an interview. She saw the

  • Wolfless Luna Rebirth: The Alpha King's Lethal Queen    Wrong Kind of Fine

~Lyra's POV~Kira picked up on the second call."Lyra?" Her voice was normal. Slightly distracted, which was how she sounded when she was in the middle of something she hadn't quite finished. "Sorry, signal is terrible in this building. I've been trying to get a callback to Runa for twenty minutes."I was on the road north, doing seventy on a stretch that suggested fifty, and I pulled my foot back on the accelerator when I heard her voice because the immediate physical response to relief is apparently to stop trying to kill yourself."You're fine," "I'm doing a resource audit. Which is not fine, exactly, but I'm alive and in possession of all my limbs, if that's what you're asking." A pause. "Lyra. What happened?""Signal issue on my end," I said. "It's nothing. I'll explain later.""That sounds like it's something," she said."It's something that resolved itself in the last forty seconds, I'll call you tomorrow."I ended the call and drove for a few minutes with both hands on the wh

~Lyra's POV~I did not want to go.I said this clearly, twice, and both times my parents listened politely and then continued preparing as if I had said something mildly interesting that didn't require a response. ~Lyra's POV~The first thing I notice is the smell.Pancakes. Warm butter.
