Samantha examined her face in the mirror. Her left eye was bruised, and her face was swollen. She covered it the best she could with makeup and then, unsatisfied and exasperated, snagged the largest pair of sunglasses she owned. She eyed a scarf hanging on the wall, then dismissed it, afraid that in the effort of trying not to draw attention to herself, she would inadvertently draw even more.

Richard never came back home last night. No call, no text, no apology, just silence. A pit had settled in her stomach from his absence, but she was also relieved because she didn't want to see him right now. She was afraid to ask him to leave, unsure how he would react.

It left her feeling restless and fighting the need to get out of here against the urge to curl into a miserable ball and disappear. Thoughts of going to sleep and never waking up teased the peripheral of her consciousness, but she refused to let them settle.

Unsure where to go, after driving aimlessly for almost an hour, she found herself downtown and maneuvered the car into one of the smaller parking garages. It was open and less daunting than the larger ones, although it was further away.

Richard had bought the BMW X3, but the somber Phytonic Blue Metallic he chose lacked the cheery personality of the one she originally wanted in the Sao Paulo Yellow. He claimed the bright color was ‘unprofessional’.

This whole little excursion felt like she was doing something wrong. She had budgeted herself so strictly the past few years, trying to save every penny she could towards buying out Uncle Eddie. Growing up with frugal parents and being mostly self-sufficient in college, combined with studiously saving, left her uneasy about frivolously spending money. She thought about the bills Richard had thrown down that she'd hesitated about picking up off the floor this morning.

She was stubborn and spiteful enough not to spend them. But she wasn't going to sit at home and cower, waiting for him to return, so she decided to compromise and treat herself to a nice lunch she wouldn't normally indulge in. It felt extremely selfish, but after last night, she decided she had the right to be.

Fuck him, she thought. He wanted her to entertain herself and give her money to play, then she would.

She remembered Richard’s barb about not having any friends. They had each moved on with their careers and families, and she felt like they had outgrown her as the distance between them widened. She had canceled plans too many times when Richard had needed her, so eventually, they stopped asking.

After she parked, she made it out to the street with her shame hidden firmly behind her sunglasses. She couldn't comprehend that this was the same city she walked in every other day before this. The sights and smells were still the same, but everything felt so different.

The raw, unfiltered noises of the busy street assaulted her ears, and the quick movements of the people around her made her jump. She focused on the lines of cars as their stop-and-go patterns were dictated by the lights on every corner. It gave the surrounding chaos a semblance of organization that helped soothe her.

She spied a little Italian place with small tables outside behind a low wooden fence that had colorful flowers in planter boxes along the top. A sign above the striped awning read Abbaticchio in swooping black letters on a stark white background, and there was a stylized rendering of a priest.

The smells of garlic and bread seeping out had her mouth watering. She asked the hostess for an outdoor seat so she wouldn't have to remove her shades. She had seen this place many times, but it was a fine establishment with a carefree, old-world feel to it, which meant it was too expensive for her to enjoy alone, and not good enough for Richard or his clients, so she never booked here.

It was perfect for today, though.

She ordered the Cozze al Vino Bianco, a light dish of mussels in a garlicky white wine, and paired it with a 2022 Terlan Quarz Sauvignon Blanc. She was delighted by the complex notes of citrus, mango, and tropical fruits when the server poured a sample, and she nodded, indicating she was pleased with the selection.

With all the turmoil inside, she began finding a bit of peace in quietly observing the crowd around her. She felt unseen yet still a part of the whole. How long had it been since she'd done this? Just sat alone and took in the world around her? Somewhere along the way, she'd gone from being confident and comfortable on her own to a nervous wreck of constantly ensuring Richard was content and happy.

In a concentrated effort to be loving and strong and supportive, she'd lost herself. She yearned for those days; she felt adventurous and untouchable, so she refused to let the hell that had become her life darken this beautiful afternoon.

Samantha enjoyed her wine and grazed on her antipasto as she watched the busy flow of customers begin to trickle down. Only a few tables still had people at them. One table at the far corner of the patio had a dark-eyed man in an expensive suit who had been there when she came in. He had been seated with a few others, including a sandy-haired man who seemed energetic, a sharp contrast to the solemn man before her now.

She could see by the way they interacted that even though they deferred to him, they were still friends. The others had left with the main lunch crowd, and now he was busy as he rotated between talking and typing away on his phone.

After two glasses, she let the server talk her into one more. She knew she shouldn't, but she was reluctant to let go of this moment of peace she'd managed to capture.

She found herself repeatedly drawn back to watching the man as he worked. Something about him fascinated her and stirred an attraction that cut through the fog of years of suppressed hurt, anger, and neglect.

Samantha must have stared at him a little too hard, or a little too long, because he startled her when his head snapped up and his eyes locked onto hers. She found herself paralyzed, unable to tear her eyes away from his powerful gaze.

And although a myriad rush of emotions seemed to fill her, fear of him wasn’t one of them.

Daniel's nostrils flared. He had felt something tickling his consciousness, off and on. It was the feeling he had when he was being watched, a feeling that hinted at danger, but each time it came today, it was brief. This feeling was frustratingly normal any time he came to a large city such as this one, which was one of the main reasons he hated to do it. It left him feeling exposed and always on alert, never able to relax or let down his guard. He had a brief meeting over lunch with Lucas and Thomas, his CFO. Thomas was just as thrilled as Lucas about the ninety-day stipend for terminated employees, but Daniel had already factored it into the cost of acquiring Elevated Financials. He showed them where he negotiated it into the price of the acquisition. He expected to lose more people initially, so as for right now, they were still in the black of projected expenses. He understood numbers and math, but they bored him. He knew Lucas was the same way, but Lucas didn't wholly approve of

You need to go to her right now, the demon urged. No, Daniel argued patiently. That will scare her.Yes. It insisted. She is already scared and hurt. Let me kill whoever did it.That's not how it works, Daniel groaned. You know this. I thought we tempered your bloodlust a long time ago.YOU tempered the bloodlust. Daniel had an image of jaws snapping, running red with blood, flashing through his mind, followed by a wolfish grin. I didn't necessarily agree to it.Daniel began to sweat with the effort of sitting in his chair and quarreling with the demon. He picked up his phone and pretended to scroll so he wouldn't be confused with a madman, muttering to himself while he stared at nothing.Enough! Daniel ordered sternly and heard a protesting growl in response. She is timid, and I'm going to bet it was a man, probably her husband, that did that to her. Didn’t you see the ring? It means she already has a mate, and she's not going to appreciate some strange, random man walking up to her.

Daniel shifted in his chair. Killing was necessary sometimes, the werewolves were no strangers to death. But killing innocent families, especially children, was inexcusable. Any rogue wolf guilty of killing the innocent was hunted down and dispatched. They were all human, once. Every werewolf in existence had been turned by another through virtue or malfeasance throughout the years. Rogue wolves on killing sprees could create irreparable chaos, like they did for centuries in Europe during the Renaissance and Reformation. Alphas were responsible for keeping their packs in line, and those who couldn't were dealt with by another, higher power."That is a very bold accusation, Ms. Donna," Daniel said carefully. He didn't want to call her a liar, but there was no way the Blue Ridge Alpha would have let something like that happen without putting down the rogue and giving reparations to the existing family.Donna drew herself up and was ready to unleash her temper on Daniel, but Lucas chose a

Daniel sat quietly as he processed Donna's story. Lucas brought her the tea and sank back down in the chair he had claimed earlier. Henry was looking down at his hands, and Daniel could smell sadness, anger, and despair as they rolled off of Henry and narrowed down to one emotion. Hate. He shook his head. Poor kid."First things first. Henry, you will become a part of my pack. You will accept me, listen and obey me as your Alpha. I will teach you to control, live, and thrive with your wolf."Henry looked up at Daniel. Uncertainty and hope began to dawn on his face."Sir? How can I?" he whispered. “I lost my family, my home. I’m a monster! I’m the same as that thing that destroyed my life! I want to kill myself, and I can’t even do that!” He sobbed, and Donna's emotions overtook her as well, his pain adding to her own, causing her to quiver next to him as she hugged him tightly."You'll do no such thing," Daniel reinforced softly. "We are not monsters. Sometimes, there are bad things ou

Samantha was embarrassed that she was caught staring at the man. She didn't know how long it lasted. He could have been dangerous with that acute predatory look in his eyes that seemed to stop time and make the world around her disappear, but the steadiness of his gaze, which should have daunted her, felt like the first solid thing she'd seen since her life began falling apart. The feeling he was seeing the things she was trying to hide was unnerving, so when his attention shifted and released its hold on her, she let her hair fall in front of her face, an effective curtain to shield her. She made it a point not to look his way again, but it was like she could feel his high energy and presence. It wasn't oppressive. It felt as if it was sunshine, but if the light had weight, a soft pressure against her skin. After he seemed to dive back into work, she began to relax again. The sun on her face after the meal and wine was heavenly, and soon she forgot about her faux pas. Unfortunately, s

"What are you sniffing at, Alpha?" Donna had asked sharply through the phone. "It sounds like that nose is going to get you in trouble."Daniel wasn't aware he had his nose in the air, like a dog or wolf, that came across something interesting, until Donna mentioned it. The wily bastard had locked onto a scent that was sweet and lightly citric. What the hell? He frowned as he traced it back to the woman with the sunglasses. He could feel his wolf's contented purr as the smell became stronger when she lifted her face to the sun and shook her hair, letting the dark, loose waves fall behind her. His wolf was drunk on her pleasant fragrance, rolling around as it wrapped around them. Daniel leaned into his notepad on the table, exasperated at its antics. The woman looked radiant, basking in the sun with her head tilted slightly back. He enjoyed the way a smile hinted at the corners of her mouth and wondered briefly what her lips tasted like as his eyes traced their curves. He admitted his w

Daniel stepped off the plane onto the unpaved strip that was a hard-packed crusher run covered in short grass. He enjoyed the familiar buzz of insects, the wind whispering among the leaves, and the distant sound of a mountain creek, all welcoming him home.A local farmer owned the strip. Somewhere along his family tree was a great-uncle who was a werewolf, and the pack had been close to his family for a few decades now. He was standing next to another man by a white, unmarked Tahoe, and Daniel made a beeline for them."Good to see you, Daniel," the farmer greeted him, nodding."Jim, likewise," Daniel replied as he nodded in return. "Thanks for letting us through on short notice, this is a quick trip.""Anytime," Jim waved."Will you be joining us for the barbecue and run tonight?" Daniel asked."My family and I will be there, Alpha," Jim grinned. "For the barbecue, not the run. The past several days blended into each other as Samantha stayed close to the house. Her attempt to enter the boutique left her feeling broken, defeated, and frustrated. She knew the feelings would persist as long as her eye was this fantastic shade of eggplant. It had been three days now, and each day, the bruise darkened with no sign of abating any time soon. The only saving grace to any of this was that Richard still hadn't come back home or reached out to her. The longer he stayed away, the more she dreaded seeing him again, and the pit in her stomach grew heavier knowing they were going to have to have a very difficult talk eventually. The afternoon she came home from the restaurant, she had looked around the house, lost. She lay on her bed and cried. It didn't get her anywhere, nor did it help ease the dull ache inside. She ran a hot bath and added Himalayan sea salt to it, hoping the warmth would penetrate her chilled core, but sat in the tub with her arms curled around her knee

Inviting him to her home. Her instincts said she could trust him, but could she even trust her instincts? What am I even doing here? But before she could work up the courage to just leave, Daniel was back with what he needed.“This should do it for today,” he said as they left the suite and walked to the elevator. “Did you want me to follow you?”“Oh, yes, you need my address,” Samantha said, blushing. “But yes, you can follow me.” She texted him her address and heard the notification ping in his pocket. The elevator stopped on the third floor, and he exited. At first, she was confused, then she remembered the hotel had a parking garage connected to it by a walkway over the street.“Did you park here in the garage?” D

He wasn’t the kind to play games or flirtatiously tease like this. She was easy to fluster, but even better, he liked it when she smiled and laughed. First of all, thank you so much to everyone who has been following along with the story! The journey so far has been filled with excitement, anxiety, partial loss of sanity, sleepless nights, and many, many pushes of the delete button 😂The story and characters are continuously developing, but please know that for right now, this is a first draft. I try to make it as perfect as I can to still post daily, but I know it is still full of mistakes. As the author, your feedback is extremely important to me. The good, the bad, and the ugly.I try to maintain continuity within the story and characters, which is quite a task considering I have elements spanning over almost twenty years, but if you catch anything that seems off (including other, basic mistakes), please let me know! My goal is to deliver a slow-burning, intriguing story with faster-paced action and subplots, hopefully, I'm able to do that! This is also my first published book, so thanks again as I navigate this learning curve!

By Tuesday morning, Samantha was able to cover up her eye with minimal effort. She received a text from Daniel yesterday morning, asking if they were still good to meet at 230 today.Absolutely! Let me send you the address of the coffee shop. She looked it up, then sent him the link. After he responded with ‘Looking forward to seeing you’, a knot settled in her stomach. That ball of feelings was complicated. She was excited. She kept telling herself it was because, even after their brief interaction, he was the first person who felt like a friend in a long time. She ignored the little voice that taunted her with how attractive and sexy she found him, because adding butterflies to the growing knot was a terrible mix. On the other hand, especially after her fight with Richard on Saturday night, she felt guilty. She was going behind his back, and she knew it. But he would never approve and never understand, even though this was a professional meeting in a casual setting. She was hiring D

Long, polished, manicured fingernails tapped the granite counter in sequence, from pinky to forefinger. The clicking noise was grating on his nerves, but he knew better than to say anything to her.Her displeasure was already apparent, and Riordan knew better than to piss off a dragon.“You were careless,” she said contemptuously. Fucking dragons, thinking they were so much better than anyone else. But still, they were better than werewolves.Riordan felt his inner animal’s hate at the thought of those unnatural abominations here, in his city. The reason his grandmother raised him here was that there were no werewolves here. Pack-oriented shifters were condescending enough, but werewolves were the worst, and shouldn’t even exist. They were anathema. “I was only having a bit of fun in the park,” he explained. “I wasn’t going to hurt her.”“You’re a scavenging breed, gnoll,” she waved him off. “If the Clearfork Alpha hadn’t intervened, would you have just left it at the park? He had a striking pattern of tightly woven coffee and caramel colored stripes. His wolf was big and stocky, heavy in the shoulders, much like his human form. And like his human form, he ran silently, but was intimidating with his serious focus. His eyes flicked up to her on the rock, and she crouched lower. She saw that he was aware of her presence and was glad he chose to ignore her.Daniel’s wolf was next. Paige came out, looking half asleep still, and following her nose to the coffee.“Oh, good,” she crooned as she wrapped her hands around her mug and sipped the hot beverage before adding sugar and creamers to it. After a few more sips, she peeked up at Daniel with a mischievous glint in her eye. “Thanks, Mr. Covington. She helped Mauricio with a quick cleanup in the kitchen, then it was time for Samantha and Richard to leave. She wondered when and why he was over here, but then realized she didn’t know anything about his whereabouts or motivations anymore. She was anxious to get out of the room and out from under Edward’s scrutiny, so after polite greetings, she retired to the kitchen. She found Mauricio putting some final touches on a charcuterie board. He looked up and smiled widely, holding his hands up in the air.“Ah! Sobrina hermosa!” He exclaimed as he came around the island. He held her shoulders and gave her dos besos, or two kisses, one in the air next to each cheek.“Mauricio,” Samantha greeted him warmly.
