Samantha examined her face in the mirror. Her left eye was bruised, and her face was swollen. She covered it the best she could with makeup and then, unsatisfied and exasperated, snagged the largest pair of sunglasses she owned. She eyed a scarf hanging on the wall, then dismissed it. In an effort to avoid drawing attention to herself, she feared it would inadvertently draw even more.

Richard never came back home last night. No call, no text, no apology, just silence. A pit had settled in her stomach from his absence, but she was also relieved because she didn't want to see him right now. She was afraid to ask him to leave, unsure how he would react.

It left her feeling restless and fighting the need to get out of here against the urge to curl into a miserable ball and disappear. Thoughts of going to sleep and never waking up teased the peripheral of her consciousness, but she refused to let them settle.

Unsure where to go, after driving aimlessly for almost an hour, she found herself downtown and maneuvered the car into one of the smaller parking garages. It was open and less daunting than the larger ones, although it was further away.

Richard had bought the BMW X3, but the somber Phytonic Blue Metallic he chose lacked the cheery personality of the one she originally wanted in the Sao Paulo Yellow. He claimed the bright color was ‘unprofessional’.

This whole little excursion felt like she was doing something wrong. She had budgeted herself so strictly the past few years, trying to save every penny she could towards buying out Uncle Eddie. Growing up with frugal parents and being mostly self-sufficient in college, combined with studiously saving, left her uneasy about frivolously spending money. She thought about the bills Richard had thrown down that she'd hesitated about picking up off the floor this morning.

She was stubborn and spiteful enough not to spend them. But she wasn't going to sit at home and cower, waiting for him to return, so she decided to compromise and treat herself to a nice lunch she wouldn't normally indulge in. It felt extremely selfish, but after last night, she decided she had the right to be.

Fuck him, she thought. He wanted her to entertain herself and give her money to play, then she would.

She remembered Richard’s barb about not having any friends. They had each moved on with their careers and families, and she felt like they had outgrown her as the distance between them widened. She had canceled plans too many times when Richard had needed her, so eventually, they stopped asking.

After she parked, she made it out to the street with her shame hidden firmly behind her sunglasses. She couldn't comprehend that this was the same city she walked in every other day before this. The sights and smells were still the same, but everything felt so different.

The raw, unfiltered noises of the busy street assaulted her ears, and the quick movements of the people around her made her jump. She focused on the lines of cars as their stop-and-go patterns were dictated by the lights on every corner. It gave the surrounding chaos a semblance of organization that helped soothe her.

She spied a little Italian place with small tables outside behind a low wooden fence that had colorful flowers in planter boxes along the top. A sign above the striped awning read Abbaticchio in swooping black letters on a stark white background, and there was a stylized rendering of a priest.

The smells of garlic and bread seeping out had her mouth watering. She asked the hostess for an outdoor seat so she wouldn't have to remove her shades. She had seen this place many times, but it was a fine establishment with a carefree, old-world feel to it, which meant it was too expensive for her to enjoy alone, and not good enough for Richard or his clients, so she never booked here.

It was perfect for today, though.

She ordered the Cozze al Vino Bianco, a light dish of mussels in a garlicky white wine, and paired it with a 2022 Terlan Quarz Sauvignon Blanc. She was delighted by the complex notes of citrus, mango, and tropical fruits when the server poured a sample, and she nodded, indicating she was pleased with the selection.

With all the turmoil inside, she began finding a bit of peace in quietly observing the crowd around her. She felt unseen yet still a part of the whole. How long had it been since she'd done this? Just sat alone and took in the world around her? Somewhere along the way, she'd gone from being confident and comfortable on her own to a nervous wreck of constantly ensuring Richard was content and happy.

In a concentrated effort to be loving and strong and supportive, she'd lost herself. She yearned for those days; she felt adventurous and untouchable, so she refused to let the hell that had become her life darken this beautiful afternoon.

Samantha enjoyed her wine and grazed on her antipasto as she watched the busy flow of customers begin to trickle down. Only a few tables still had people at them. One table at the far corner of the patio had a dark-eyed man in an expensive suit who had been there when she came in. He had been seated with a few others, including a sandy-haired man who seemed energetic, a sharp contrast to the solemn man before her now.

She could see by the way they interacted that even though they deferred to him, they were still friends. The others had left with the main lunch crowd, and now he was busy as he rotated between talking and typing away on his phone.

After two glasses, she let the server talk her into one more. She knew she shouldn't, but she was reluctant to let go of this moment of peace she'd managed to capture.

She found herself repeatedly drawn back to watching the man as he worked. Something about him fascinated her and stirred an attraction that cut through the fog of years of suppressed hurt, anger, and neglect.

Samantha must have stared at him a little too hard, or a little too long, because he startled her when his head snapped up and his eyes locked onto hers. She found herself paralyzed, unable to tear her eyes away from his powerful gaze.

And although a rush of emotions seemed to fill her, fear of him wasn’t one of them.

Samantha came home Wednesday night after the dinner feeling optimistic and accomplished. She did this. On her own. Uncle Edward, while there, was just moral support and the key to opening the door between her and the new owners. He sat on the sidelines, watching and offering only small comments of advice when he felt they were necessary.By the end of the evening, she had a concrete outline for the May Mixer and needed to build a schedule and guest list. She felt thrilled at working again and realized she’d indeed missed the excitement and challenge it brought her, and the resulting satisfaction of when they were a success. She was late enough that she wasn’t surprised to see Richard had beaten her home. The light was on in his study, and she set down the flower arrangement she rescued in the entryway before moving to the kitchen. Richard came out of his study, acting strangely, but then she realized he was drunk. Not just tipsy, but full-blown inebriated. She let him talk her into on

With shaky hands, he poured a scotch from his bar, filling the glass too much, not caring that he splashed it all over the wood. He tilted it up and swallowed it down like water. He bent over coughing, then did it again. The alcohol put a buzz in his brain, but it didn’t still the pronounced beating of his heart. He didn’t know where to begin. He sat down in his chair and looked at his desk and the mess on the floor. He needed to clean it up, just in case Samantha tried to come in here when he was gone. He sniffed, liquid snot running down his nose from his coughing fit, and opened the bottom right drawer of his desk.Built into the drawer was a fireproof safe. The back half held a hanging folder for important documents, and the front half was open to hold a variety of shapes and items, and the whole thing was lined in black felt. One of those items was a loaded pistol and a small box of ammunition. He gathered all the documents and pictures he received, making very sure he found ever

Richard spent the rest of the week in the office. He touched base with a few of his clients, explaining some of the structural changes, reinforcing that he wanted them to hear it from him and not to be alarmed. Elevated Financials is still solid, and they had a great opportunity with a new investor to make some important updates, and he looked forward to continuing to provide them peace of mind and opportunities to increase their portfolio and plan for their retirement. He swiped his face with his hands. It had been three days of non-stop, the same phone calls and lines. Luckily, none of his clients bailed. He didn’t think they would. He made a few notes on his computer about the call, then moved the Prescott folder over from ‘WILL CALL’ to ‘COMPLETE’. His mouse hovered over the next folder on the list, the Priestleys. He remembered when he secured their contract. Mr. Priestley refused to do anything without the complete approval of his wife. It was one of the first times he’d enliste

Daniel had originally intended to make the dinner to interview an employee tonight, but he decided to wait around while everything was processed. He wanted to receive the key from the realtor as soon as possible so they could start moving in. He was leaving employee details to Lucas, at least until they started bringing in the wolves. He was glad the loft was basically furnished, including basic kitchen items. It was one less thing he had to worry about. He threw the realtor an extra thousand as a tip on her commission to ensure all they had to do was bring their personal items in. That meant finding a decorator this afternoon and filling out the place with linens, towels, and basic decor. He’d already spoken to Donna to set up utilities and billing. The loft was a lot bigger than he’d originally considered getting, but the advantage to that was that it ensured there were enough rooms to accommodate anybody who would be coming by. The downside to that was to make sure Stillman didn’t f

Thomas wasn’t the skinny kid others thought was an easy target anymore. He’d grown into a quiet, reserved man. Taming his wolf had never been the challenge for him, it had been for the others. He supposed he lived with a dual nature his entire life, just the beast within him manifested physically. The wolf enhanced his natural instincts, happy to hunt through piles of information or to make sure all the numbers lined up. And while Elevated’s numbers on paper lined up, he was frustrated that he was missing something. Something obvious. When he met Samantha, he thought he’d figured it out. Here she was, employed but not an employee. Connected to the company, yet not vital to its operations. A shadow job. It was the perfect place to slide in a family employee, and the fact that her funds weren't allocated like the rest was highly suspicious. His wolf was on the hunt, and he was determined to uncover the truth.Even though Samantha Barringer seemed to have no direct correlation to Merrick

Samantha turned to look in the direction of the voice coming from the doorway. She thought she heard a familiar timber to it, reminding her of Daniel, but instead she saw a man with curly brown hair and sharp eyes. Maybe it was his accent, or the way his low voice carried, but it lacked the amusement she would have expected from her new friend. The man strode in purposefully and looked at her as if she were a puzzle piece he’d found, unsure which box she belonged in. He turned to Edward, who’d stepped forward to introduce her.“Samantha, this is Thomas Blevins, the Chief Financial Officer. Thomas, this is Samantha Barringer, our Event Coordinator,” he said succinctly.“Mr. Blevins, it’s a pleasure to meet you,” Samantha said smoothly, although her inability to read him undermined the confidence she’d gathered.Thomas looked at her and back at Edward with a slight disapproving frown. “Mr. Merrick, I don’t recall her name or position in the roster of employees I have.”“Samantha’s positi
