Daniel's nostrils flared. He had felt something tickling his consciousness, off and on. It was the feeling he had when he was being watched, a feeling that hinted at danger, but each time it came today, it was brief.
This feeling was frustratingly normal any time he came to a large city such as this one, which was one of the main reasons he hated to do it. It left him feeling exposed and always on alert, never able to relax or let down his guard.
He had a brief meeting over lunch with Lucas and Thomas, his CFO. Thomas was just as thrilled as Lucas about the ninety-day stipend for terminated employees, but Daniel had already factored it into the cost of acquiring Elevated Financials. He showed them where he negotiated it into the price of the acquisition. He expected to lose more people initially, so as for right now, they were still in the black of projected expenses.
He understood numbers and math, but they bored him. He knew Lucas was the same way, but Lucas didn't wholly approve of anything unless he was convinced that Daniel and Clearfork came out ahead. Thomas, though...
Daniel had known Thomas for a while. Not as long as Lucas, but Thomas had been in Daniel and Lucas's platoon in the military. Once battle buddy bonds as strong as theirs were forged, it takes an act of God to break them.
Which is almost what happened. Coming home held a nasty surprise for both Daniel and Lucas that changed all three of their lives forever. Ironically, though, Daniel grudgingly thanked that Christian God, the one he didn't fully trust, every day that those bonds with Lucas and Thomas remained. Thomas had become such an important piece to their success.
Thomas looked at numbers like a puzzle, using his instincts to sniff out anything amiss and the best places to invest. He also seemed to sense when to pull the plug on a bad endeavor to minimize losses, even when Daniel himself didn't see it. He hadn't been wrong yet, and the one time Daniel didn't heed his advice cost him dearly. He wasn't going to make that mistake again.
Now that the review of the updated expenditures was compared to the overall, he needed to check on the status of things back at home base. But that tickle was becoming an itch he was beginning to feel between his shoulder blades. Right at the moment it strengthened enough to irritate him, it would disappear. It was on the verge of driving him crazy.
He didn't usually work in the open in public like this, but he refused to go back to the office today and be accessible to people popping in with questions, and everyone that wanted to kiss the boss's ass. He'd deal with it all at the next meeting. Until then, this was Lucas’s responsibility, and Daniel planned on making himself scarce.
The hotel was an option, but he was restless and needed the fresh air and sunshine. It wasn't the open air of home, but it was still better than being locked away, and he liked the simple feel of this restaurant. It blended old world simplicity with contemporary designs to give it an overall clean and subtly refined atmosphere. He was seated at a table in the corner that allowed him to look over the other patrons outside, the door to the restaurant, and pedestrians on the sidewalks.
It added to his sense of unease that Elevated Financials was the first business he acquired without executing his usual plan: absorbing key assets before shutting down operations and relocating them closer to his home base. Plus, it was an extremely long way from home, and it left him feeling slightly out of control. It also pained him knowing he would not have Lucas readily accessible for the near future. Lucas was his brother, his number two, but that is also why he trusted him enough to put him in charge here for the time being.
As for back at home, he left Justin in charge of everything while he was gone. Although Justin was in a higher position, he wasn’t in the upper echelon of leadership. Daniel preferred having one of his top guys in charge, but that wasn’t an option since he needed them here to ensure things went as smoothly as possible. Everything was set to run like clockwork at Clearfork, and Justin was more than capable. Even better, he was dependable, and Daniel knew Justin wouldn't hesitate to contact him if needed.
Besides, Donna, his assistant, was there, and she would make sure Justin stayed on track. He was just getting ready to call her when the light tickling became a burning sensation, one he couldn't ignore this time. He knew with full certainty that he had been singled out, and the person watching him just got sloppy.
They did not know who they were dealing with.
He took a moment to focus and felt the direction the attention was coming from and snapped his head up to catch the culprit in the act of spying on him, ready to take action if he needed to. His body vibrated at the intrusion as he prepared for six different scenarios, each one of them potentially life-threatening.
But the culprit was closer, and much less lethal, than he imagined, and he found himself locked onto a pair of brown, beautiful almond shaped eyes tinted by sunglasses. Most people wouldn't have been able to see past the dark lenses, but he wasn't most people and peered through them with ease.
What he saw was bottomless pain in those depths, a tread-worn soul that was weary. The woman didn't move, or even blink, as he held her gaze, silently commanding her to let him see. Her eyes stirred the demon within him, igniting a fierce fire to protect her and destroy whoever dared hurt her.
He saw through the shades that she truly was hurt, and not with just internal, emotional pain. The left side of her face was swollen, and the tender skin under her eye looked like it was still in the process of darkening. He noticed where her makeup was heavier on that side in an attempt to cover it up.
When his attention shifted to the rest of her face, he noticed as she visibly wilted, like their connection was the only thing that had been holding her up, and now that it was broken, her strength failed her. She looked down and away, letting her dark locks fall forward as if she were trying to hide.
I see you, he thought silently.
We see you, the demon corrected.
Daniel definitely wasn’t expecting to find Samantha on the other end of that stare! Who do you think was more surprised by that intense connection? Him or Her? Next chapter will explore the immediate aftermath of this unexpected encounter. Will Daniel act on his instincts?
The week was dragging on. The wolf kept urging Daniel to make contact with Samantha, but Daniel knew he shouldn’t. He silently promised to protect her from himself as much as anything else he could. We can protect her better if we’re with her, his wolf insisted. It was insufferable now that Daniel had spent a considerable amount of time with her.Daniel was tired of this same argument, so he did what he could to shut the wolf out. They weren’t usually at odds like this, but the wolf couldn’t understand the complexity of the situation Daniel was in.Daniel had reached out to Donna. Emmanuel and his team were expected to be down by Saturday or Sunday at the latest. He’d make sure Samantha’s house was their first priority at the beginning of next week.As for now, he was waiting for Paige. They had appointments to see the lofts she and Lucas had picked out. Daniel had the security team throw in extra basic equipment in hopes that one of these were going to suffice. His door was open, and
Richard came into work bright and early on Monday morning, opening his office and sorting through his files. He already had the most and the biggest accounts, so he didn’t have too much to do, but it was time for him to start being seen and noticed. But his concentration lagged, no matter how many cups of coffee he had. He kept thinking back to yesterday. It wasn’t the first time he’d slept with someone other than Samantha or Mari, but this Rosalyn chick, something about her was exciting and terrifying all in one. In some ways, she reminded him of Mari. The way she took control, the way she made him feel like scum. But if his night with her made Mari look like a nun, it made Samantha look like a virgin. He didn’t know what to think of Jaxson having a membership at that place. The upstairs area, the Aeria, was classy, with seduction as an underlying tone in the decor and atmosphere.Jaxson had come back from the pisser to find Rosalyn coiled around him on the lounge couch they had bee
We can’t help that, he told the wolf. His wolf retreated, but he could feel it unhappily simmering just below the surface. He turned around and saw a nervous look on Samantha’s face.“Sorry,” he apologized. I just had a thought, and I get wrapped up in my work sometimes. She paused before nodding slowly. When she was setting up an event space, her own tendency to stop as ideas and visualizations hit her, so she shrugged off her initial concern.“I get that,” she laughed. “I can get pretty wrapped up when I work, too.”Daniel continued making notes and now small talk. “Oh yeah?” He asked. “What do you do?”Samantha sighed. “It seems like nothing at the moment. I went to school for graphic design and marketing, but I’ve been organizing and setting up for events for the past few years. I enjoy it, but work has been slow lately.”“Oh, that seems like it would be a lot of fun,” Daniel said politely with a half smile. Putting on parties for weddings and social events was way out of his lea
She knew she shouldn’t jump to any conclusions, but she still felt like a fool. Just because he didn’t have a ring on didn’t mean he wasn’t involved with somebody. She waited by the door while Daniel grabbed what he needed. She couldn’t help but rethink this whole thing. Inviting him to her home. Her instincts said she could trust him, but could she even trust her instincts? What am I even doing here? But before she could work up the courage to just leave, Daniel was back with what he needed.“This should do it for today,” he said as they left the suite and walked to the elevator. “Did you want me to follow you?”“Oh, yes, you need my address,” Samantha said, blushing. “But yes, you can follow me.” She texted him her address and heard the notification ping in his pocket. The elevator stopped on the third floor, and he exited. At first, she was confused, then she remembered the hotel had a parking garage connected to it by a walkway over the street.“Did you park here in the garage?” D
“I.. I..” Samantha licked her lips, unable to look away.Daniel turned down his intensity and laughed.“It’s okay, Samantha, I know I’m intense. But, it’s just who I am,” he said softly, looking down at his own coffee to give her a minute to collect herself. He didn’t know what came over him. He wasn’t the kind to play games or flirtatiously tease like this. She was easy to fluster, but even better, he liked it when she smiled and laughed. It was as if all her troubles melted away.“And who exactly are you?” She asked, peeking up at him with curiosity, but refusing to get caught in his gaze again.Talk about a complicated question. She would never believe, or would run away screaming if she knew the full t
First of all, thank you so much to everyone who has been following along with the story! The journey so far has been filled with excitement, anxiety, partial loss of sanity, sleepless nights, and many, many pushes of the delete button 😂The story and characters are continuously developing, but please know that for right now, this is a first draft. I try to make it as perfect as I can to still post daily, but I know it is still full of mistakes. As the author, your feedback is extremely important to me. The good, the bad, and the ugly.I try to maintain continuity within the story and characters, which is quite a task considering I have elements spanning over almost twenty years, but if you catch anything that seems off (including other, basic mistakes), please let me know! My goal is to deliver a slow-burning, intriguing story with faster-paced action and subplots, hopefully, I'm able to do that! This is also my first published book, so thanks again as I navigate this learning curve!
By Tuesday morning, Samantha was able to cover up her eye with minimal effort. She received a text from Daniel yesterday morning, asking if they were still good to meet at 230 today.Absolutely! Let me send you the address of the coffee shop. She looked it up, then sent him the link. After he responded with ‘Looking forward to seeing you’, a knot settled in her stomach. That ball of feelings was complicated. She was excited. She kept telling herself it was because, even after their brief interaction, he was the first person who felt like a friend in a long time. She ignored the little voice that taunted her with how attractive and sexy she found him, because adding butterflies to the growing knot was a terrible mix. On the other hand, especially after her fight with Richard on Saturday night, she felt guilty. She was going behind his back, and she knew it. But he would never approve and never understand, even though this was a professional meeting in a casual setting. She was hiring D
Long, polished, manicured fingernails tapped the granite counter in sequence, from pinky to forefinger. The clicking noise was grating on his nerves, but he knew better than to say anything to her.Her displeasure was already apparent, and Riordan knew better than to piss off a dragon.“You were careless,” she said contemptuously. Fucking dragons, thinking they were so much better than anyone else. But still, they were better than werewolves.Riordan felt his inner animal’s hate at the thought of those unnatural abominations here, in his city. The reason his grandmother raised him here was that there were no werewolves here. Pack-oriented shifters were condescending enough, but werewolves were the worst, and shouldn’t even exist. They were anathema. “I was only having a bit of fun in the park,” he explained. “I wasn’t going to hurt her.”“You’re a scavenging breed, gnoll,” she waved him off. “If the Clearfork Alpha hadn’t intervened, would you have just left it at the park? Your pref
Paige didn’t have long to wait before she saw the four Clearfork wolves come into view. First was Judd’s brindled colored wolf. He had a striking pattern of tightly woven coffee and caramel colored stripes. His wolf was big and stocky, heavy in the shoulders, much like his human form. And like his human form, he ran silently, but was intimidating with his serious focus. His eyes flicked up to her on the rock, and she crouched lower. She saw that he was aware of her presence and was glad he chose to ignore her.Daniel’s wolf was next. She was surprised his wolf wasn’t dark gray or black. He had the most traditional wolf coloring, with his grays blending from silver to a darker nickel and white markings. Just a few steps behind him was Thomas with his reddish coat.Bringing up the rear was her
