"Daniel," the sandy-haired man called out as he entered the brightly lit office without knocking. He handed a few files to the dark-eyed man behind the massive, well-polished mahogany desk that left faint traces of citrus in the air.
"Lucas," Daniel acknowledged. "What are we looking at?"
"The top folder contains the files for the main agents," Lucas said as he took a seat and leaned back, crossing his legs and putting his hands behind his head. Daniel may be the big dog, but they had been friends since childhood. "The second is the list to let go."
Daniel scanned each folder briefly, starting with the second one. Fifteen employees, most of them in secretarial or data entry positions. They wouldn't need this many with the new systems he was installing.
"These are fine. Pick the five strongest people, if they're worth a damn, they should be able to handle the workload of the whole fifteen. Make sure the ones being let go get a decent severance and a ninety-day stipend."
"Ninety days?" Lucas coughed.
"Yes," Daniel sighed. "These changes aren’t their fault, so I don’t want them to ultimately feel as if they are being punished. Everybody is nervous as it is, and we need to show that we can be trusted and have their best interests at heart so we don’t have an en masse bailing of the ship." Daniel opened the next folder. Each file had a headshot attached to a personnel page.
"Yes, boss," Lucas said with a twist to his mouth, clearly not happy with that decision.
"Don't worry," Daniel smirked. "It won't eat into your profits. You act like I don't pay you enough."
"You don't," Lucas snorted without missing a beat, but the roll of his eyes betrayed his sarcasm.
"After you get the cutbacks squared away, get me some face time with these guys," Daniel instructed, tapping the first folder. "You've done a great job heading everything up, but I think it's time for these guys to meet the wolf in the henhouse."
"Right away," Lucas grinned and left.
It's all well and good to treat the people he's letting go with care, but for the people staying... he needed to make sure they knew who was running the show now.
And he also needed to locate this final shareholder, Alan Merrick. He wasn’t sure why Edward was deliberately vague about him, just mentioning it was his nephew, but Daniel didn’t want any potential issues to complicate business, so the sooner he found him, the better. All attempts to reach out had been left unanswered, and it gave him the impression that something was off.
Almost fifty people altogether were gathered for the meeting. It looked like Lucas added a few faces. It made seating far too close for comfort, and others were standing, but they wouldn't be here long. He could hear their clothing rustling against each other’s and the leather of the chairs, and whisper across the smooth surface of the table. Small creaks came from the seats as people adjusted.
Daniel eyed them over. He noticed the ones that fidgeted in their seats or where they stood, too nervous to look at him, as well as the ones that raised their heads confidently, some daring to look him in the eye. He didn't appreciate the latter and glared at each one until they unconsciously submitted by dropping their eyes.
But one man kept his eyes on him the longest, his stare meant to challenge and intimidate. He had green eyes and was tall and trim, just slightly smaller than Daniel.
And he was pissing Daniel the fuck off.
Daniel steeled his gaze and let a fraction of his power seep through. The man's face paled, and he dropped his eyes involuntarily and swallowed. Satisfied, Daniel began his meeting.
"I know this is a difficult time for everyone here, but I'm pleased to announce that once we're officially integrated, you'll find working under Clearfork Securities not that different than before."I'm Daniel Sanford. Most of you have already met your Chief of Operations, Lucas Dunn. You'll be seeing more of him than me most of the time, as he'll be running things here in my stead.
"But, to begin with, we've let some of your support staff go with severance pay and a ninety-day stipend. If any of you wish to leave now, you'll be getting the same offer. We hope you won't go, but we understand change can be difficult, and I will be honest here - there will be a significant amount of change as we upgrade, organize, and restructure."
Daniel loathed these meetings and the overwhelming smells of the different body odors and perfumes in the tight confines of the room choked him. He wasn't for long speeches anyway and was already itching to leave. They've seen his face now. They know he means business.
"I need.... Smith, Johnson, Brown, Covington, Williams, and Mendez to stay behind. The rest of you are excused. Lucas will be around to touch base with you, or feel free to reach out and let him know your decision."
Everyone other than the ones he called got up and left.
"Gentlemen," Daniel addressed them quickly. He noticed the green-eyed man was one of the ones who remained. Great. "You are the quarterbacks. The success here rides on you. You have a fresh start under Clearfork's name, so you need to explain to your current clients that nothing's changed, and to the clients you’ve lost, that everything has changed, and see what we can do to reel them back in. I'll be looking for an Accounts Manager, I need someone strong at closing who can handle their workload and not hesitate to lend a hand where it's needed."
Daniel noticed how a few of them shifted their eyes to the green-eyed man. They didn't say anything, and he continued.
"In one month, I'll be setting up personal interviews, but until then, I'll be going over all of your work, past and present, with a fine-toothed comb. I want to know everything about you, your families, and what causes you to lie awake at night.
"Let's be clear. I'm not one of your refined CEOs. I built Clearfork by providing security details and tech to high-profile figureheads. Reading people and situations is my specialty, so as long as you are open and honest, we'll get along just fine. I will let you know that through Clearfork, I have high-level contact with potential clients that would benefit from Elevated Financials’ services, and I would love to see you provide them with your expertise.
"Now, I look forward to speaking with you all individually, but today's session is just an informal meeting. Do any of you have any quick questions for me?"
He could tell that he had unbalanced them. He knew it would take them a minute to digest everything he said, and he planned to be long gone by the time they did. He could already see the wheels turning, excited about the new potential accounts. While everybody was still wearing a blank expression on their faces, he stood as his stomach growled.
"Alright," Daniel wrapped up. "It's been a pleasure, but I'm leaving for lunch. Get with Lucas if you need anything and have a good day."
Say Hello to Daniel! He's not afraid to come in hot and ruffle a few feathers!
Samantha examined her face in the mirror. Her left eye was bruised, and her face was swollen. She covered it the best she could with makeup and then, unsatisfied and exasperated, snagged the largest pair of sunglasses she owned. She eyed a scarf hanging on the wall, then dismissed it, afraid that in the effort of trying not to draw attention to herself, she would inadvertently draw even more.Richard never came back home last night. No call, no text, no apology, just silence. A pit had settled in her stomach from his absence, but she was also relieved because she didn't want to see him right now. She was afraid to ask him to leave, unsure how he would react. It left her feeling restless and fighting the need to get out of here against the urge to curl into a miserable ball and disappear. Thoughts of going to sleep and never waking up teased the peripheral of her consciousness, but she refused to let them settle.Unsure where to go, after driving aimlessly for almost an hour, she found
Daniel's nostrils flared. He had felt something tickling his consciousness, off and on. It was the feeling he had when he was being watched, a feeling that hinted at danger, but each time it came today, it was brief. This feeling was frustratingly normal any time he came to a large city such as this one, which was one of the main reasons he hated to do it. It left him feeling exposed and always on alert, never able to relax or let down his guard. He had a brief meeting over lunch with Lucas and Thomas, his CFO. Thomas was just as thrilled as Lucas about the ninety-day stipend for terminated employees, but Daniel had already factored it into the cost of acquiring Elevated Financials. He showed them where he negotiated it into the price of the acquisition. He expected to lose more people initially, so as for right now, they were still in the black of projected expenses. He understood numbers and math, but they bored him. He knew Lucas was the same way, but Lucas didn't wholly approve of
You need to go to her right now, the demon urged. No, Daniel argued patiently. That will scare her.Yes. It insisted. She is already scared and hurt. Let me kill whoever did it.That's not how it works, Daniel groaned. You know this. I thought we tempered your bloodlust a long time ago.YOU tempered the bloodlust. Daniel had an image of jaws snapping, running red with blood, flashing through his mind, followed by a wolfish grin. I didn't necessarily agree to it.Daniel began to sweat with the effort of sitting in his chair and quarreling with the demon. He picked up his phone and pretended to scroll so he wouldn't be confused with a madman, muttering to himself while he stared at nothing.Enough! Daniel ordered sternly and heard a protesting growl in response. She is timid, and I'm going to bet it was a man, probably her husband, that did that to her. Didn’t you see the ring? It means she already has a mate, and she's not going to appreciate some strange, random man walking up to her.
Daniel shifted in his chair. Killing was necessary sometimes, the werewolves were no strangers to death. But killing innocent families, especially children, was inexcusable. Any rogue wolf guilty of killing the innocent was hunted down and dispatched. They were all human, once. Every werewolf in existence had been turned by another through virtue or malfeasance throughout the years. Rogue wolves on killing sprees could create irreparable chaos, like they did for centuries in Europe during the Renaissance and Reformation. Alphas were responsible for keeping their packs in line, and those who couldn't were dealt with by another, higher power."That is a very bold accusation, Ms. Donna," Daniel said carefully. He didn't want to call her a liar, but there was no way the Blue Ridge Alpha would have let something like that happen without putting down the rogue and giving reparations to the existing family.Donna drew herself up and was ready to unleash her temper on Daniel, but Lucas chose a
Daniel sat quietly as he processed Donna's story. Lucas brought her the tea and sank back down in the chair he had claimed earlier. Henry was looking down at his hands, and Daniel could smell sadness, anger, and despair as they rolled off of Henry and narrowed down to one emotion. Hate. He shook his head. Poor kid."First things first. Henry, you will become a part of my pack. You will accept me, listen and obey me as your Alpha. I will teach you to control, live, and thrive with your wolf."Henry looked up at Daniel. Uncertainty and hope began to dawn on his face."Sir? How can I?" he whispered. “I lost my family, my home. I’m a monster! I’m the same as that thing that destroyed my life! I want to kill myself, and I can’t even do that!” He sobbed, and Donna's emotions overtook her as well, his pain adding to her own, causing her to quiver next to him as she hugged him tightly."You'll do no such thing," Daniel reinforced softly. "We are not monsters. Sometimes, there are bad things ou
Samantha was embarrassed that she was caught staring at the man. She didn't know how long it lasted. He could have been dangerous with that acute predatory look in his eyes that seemed to stop time and make the world around her disappear, but the steadiness of his gaze, which should have daunted her, felt like the first solid thing she'd seen since her life began falling apart. The feeling he was seeing the things she was trying to hide was unnerving, so when his attention shifted and released its hold on her, she let her hair fall in front of her face, an effective curtain to shield her. She made it a point not to look his way again, but it was like she could feel his high energy and presence. It wasn't oppressive. It felt as if it was sunshine, but if the light had weight, a soft pressure against her skin. After he seemed to dive back into work, she began to relax again. The sun on her face after the meal and wine was heavenly, and soon she forgot about her faux pas. Unfortunately, s
"What are you sniffing at, Alpha?" Donna had asked sharply through the phone. "It sounds like that nose is going to get you in trouble."Daniel wasn't aware he had his nose in the air, like a dog or wolf, that came across something interesting, until Donna mentioned it. The wily bastard had locked onto a scent that was sweet and lightly citric. What the hell? He frowned as he traced it back to the woman with the sunglasses. He could feel his wolf's contented purr as the smell became stronger when she lifted her face to the sun and shook her hair, letting the dark, loose waves fall behind her. His wolf was drunk on her pleasant fragrance, rolling around as it wrapped around them. Daniel leaned into his notepad on the table, exasperated at its antics. The woman looked radiant, basking in the sun with her head tilted slightly back. He enjoyed the way a smile hinted at the corners of her mouth and wondered briefly what her lips tasted like as his eyes traced their curves. He admitted his w
Daniel stepped off the plane onto the unpaved strip that was a hard-packed crusher run covered in short grass. He enjoyed the familiar buzz of insects, the wind whispering among the leaves, and the distant sound of a mountain creek, all welcoming him home.A local farmer owned the strip. Somewhere along his family tree was a great-uncle who was a werewolf, and the pack had been close to his family for a few decades now. He was standing next to another man by a white, unmarked Tahoe, and Daniel made a beeline for them."Good to see you, Daniel," the farmer greeted him, nodding."Jim, likewise," Daniel replied as he nodded in return. "Thanks for letting us through on short notice, this is a quick trip.""Anytime," Jim waved."Will you be joining us for the barbecue and run tonight?" Daniel asked."My family and I will be there, Alpha," Jim grinned. "For the barbecue, not the run. Justin here came down and grabbed a couple of pigs two days ago and has had them on the ground since yesterda
She knew she shouldn’t jump to any conclusions, but she still felt like a fool. Just because he didn’t have a ring on didn’t mean he wasn’t involved with somebody. She waited by the door while Daniel grabbed what he needed. She couldn’t help but rethink this whole thing. Inviting him to her home. Her instincts said she could trust him, but could she even trust her instincts? What am I even doing here? But before she could work up the courage to just leave, Daniel was back with what he needed.“This should do it for today,” he said as they left the suite and walked to the elevator. “Did you want me to follow you?”“Oh, yes, you need my address,” Samantha said, blushing. “But yes, you can follow me.” She texted him her address and heard the notification ping in his pocket. The elevator stopped on the third floor, and he exited. At first, she was confused, then she remembered the hotel had a parking garage connected to it by a walkway over the street.“Did you park here in the garage?” D
“I.. I..” Samantha licked her lips, unable to look away.Daniel turned down his intensity and laughed.“It’s okay, Samantha, I know I’m intense. But, it’s just who I am,” he said softly, looking down at his own coffee to give her a minute to collect herself. He didn’t know what came over him. He wasn’t the kind to play games or flirtatiously tease like this. She was easy to fluster, but even better, he liked it when she smiled and laughed. It was as if all her troubles melted away.“And who exactly are you?” She asked, peeking up at him with curiosity, but refusing to get caught in his gaze again.Talk about a complicated question. She would never believe, or would run away screaming if she knew the full t
First of all, thank you so much to everyone who has been following along with the story! The journey so far has been filled with excitement, anxiety, partial loss of sanity, sleepless nights, and many, many pushes of the delete button 😂The story and characters are continuously developing, but please know that for right now, this is a first draft. I try to make it as perfect as I can to still post daily, but I know it is still full of mistakes. As the author, your feedback is extremely important to me. The good, the bad, and the ugly.I try to maintain continuity within the story and characters, which is quite a task considering I have elements spanning over almost twenty years, but if you catch anything that seems off (including other, basic mistakes), please let me know! My goal is to deliver a slow-burning, intriguing story with faster-paced action and subplots, hopefully, I'm able to do that! This is also my first published book, so thanks again as I navigate this learning curve!
By Tuesday morning, Samantha was able to cover up her eye with minimal effort. She received a text from Daniel yesterday morning, asking if they were still good to meet at 230 today.Absolutely! Let me send you the address of the coffee shop. She looked it up, then sent him the link. After he responded with ‘Looking forward to seeing you’, a knot settled in her stomach. That ball of feelings was complicated. She was excited. She kept telling herself it was because, even after their brief interaction, he was the first person who felt like a friend in a long time. She ignored the little voice that taunted her with how attractive and sexy she found him, because adding butterflies to the growing knot was a terrible mix. On the other hand, especially after her fight with Richard on Saturday night, she felt guilty. She was going behind his back, and she knew it. But he would never approve and never understand, even though this was a professional meeting in a casual setting. She was hiring D
Long, polished, manicured fingernails tapped the granite counter in sequence, from pinky to forefinger. The clicking noise was grating on his nerves, but he knew better than to say anything to her.Her displeasure was already apparent, and Riordan knew better than to piss off a dragon.“You were careless,” she said contemptuously. Fucking dragons, thinking they were so much better than anyone else. But still, they were better than werewolves.Riordan felt his inner animal’s hate at the thought of those unnatural abominations here, in his city. The reason his grandmother raised him here was that there were no werewolves here. Pack-oriented shifters were condescending enough, but werewolves were the worst, and shouldn’t even exist. They were anathema. “I was only having a bit of fun in the park,” he explained. “I wasn’t going to hurt her.”“You’re a scavenging breed, gnoll,” she waved him off. “If the Clearfork Alpha hadn’t intervened, would you have just left it at the park? Your pref
Paige didn’t have long to wait before she saw the four Clearfork wolves come into view. First was Judd’s brindled colored wolf. He had a striking pattern of tightly woven coffee and caramel colored stripes. His wolf was big and stocky, heavy in the shoulders, much like his human form. And like his human form, he ran silently, but was intimidating with his serious focus. His eyes flicked up to her on the rock, and she crouched lower. She saw that he was aware of her presence and was glad he chose to ignore her.Daniel’s wolf was next. She was surprised his wolf wasn’t dark gray or black. He had the most traditional wolf coloring, with his grays blending from silver to a darker nickel and white markings. Just a few steps behind him was Thomas with his reddish coat.Bringing up the rear was her
Daniel was up early, feeling refreshed on Friday morning. He put on a pot of coffee for everyone, then slipped out and grabbed some bagels before they woke up.Thomas came out of his room while Daniel was setting the bagels out. “Alpha,” he greeted Daniel. Daniel nodded good morning while he bit into a bagel. Paige came out, looking half asleep still, and following her nose to the coffee.“Oh, good,” she crooned as she wrapped her hands around her mug and sipped the hot beverage before adding sugar and creamers to it. After a few more sips, she peeked up at Daniel with a mischievous glint in her eye. “Thanks, Mr. Covington. Did you sleep well last night?”“I slept very well, Paige,” he said carefully, wondering what she was up to. “And you?” It was almost like a switch had been flipped since yesterday. She seemed comfortable around him this morning.“Well, we were up late last night,” she told him. “But I think we narrowed it down to three for your approval.”“I trust the two of you,”
The rest of the dinner and evening with Edward and Mauricio went smoothly, if not necessarily comfortably. Samantha saw Richard was noticing her now, but the looks he kept casting her way were dark and thoughtful. They were making her nervous, but she tried not to show it as she resumed her practiced smile and commented politely when it seemed appropriate. After what felt like forever, dessert was served and cleared. She helped Mauricio with a quick cleanup in the kitchen, then it was time for Samantha and Richard to leave. Mauricio kissed the air next to her cheek, just like when he greeted her, looking for a promise from her to come back and see the horses, and Edward squeezed her hand, letting her know he would be in touch with her soon.Richard opened the car door for Samantha, and she felt he slammed it with more force than necessary. He didn’t look at her
Samantha caught Edward’s comment about being here twice this week. She wondered when and why he was over here, but then realized she didn’t know anything about his whereabouts or motivations anymore. She was anxious to get out of the room and out from under Edward’s scrutiny, so after polite greetings, she retired to the kitchen. She found Mauricio putting some final touches on a charcuterie board. He looked up and smiled widely, holding his hands up in the air.“Ah! Sobrina hermosa!” He exclaimed as he came around the island. He held her shoulders and gave her dos besos, or two kisses, one in the air next to each cheek.“Mauricio,” Samantha greeted him warmly. Maricio always seemed a little more reserved around Richard, but around her, he blossomed like a flower. He claimed she reminded him of his nieces back home, and he was a breath of fresh air after her emotionally tense day.In his presence, she could forget Richard’s oppressive cloud that had been hanging over her. Mauricio was
