"For the Capo's room, our team of eight maids were handpicked by Alexa, the housekeeper of this mansion," Rosie said nervously, her voice barely a whisper.

As if on cue, the doors to the room were thrown open with a bang, and a beautiful woman in her thirties stormed in, her face twisted in a scowl. Her eyes burned daggers through Rosie, who let out a startled yelp and scurried away into the bathroom.

The leather whip she held in her hand made her look even more intimidating. When her sharp gaze fell on me, I instinctively took a few steps back. "Donna," she greeted me, a polite word that was completely at odds with the sneer on her lips.

"What's your name?" I asked, trying to sound a little less terrified.

Her scowl deepened as she looked me up and down, a slow, appraising stare that made me feel small. "Macy Loraine," she finally replied, "I'm one of the four housekeepers, and my duty is to manage the maids."

She paused, and I gave a hesitant nod for her to continue.

A groan rumbled in my chest as my feet, heavy with the weight of my indignation, thudded down the marble floor. "I don't want any dessert," I announced, the words tasting like sour grapes on my tongue. The plush carpet of my new room swallowed my footsteps. I grabbed the blanket, a thick, quilted monstrosity that felt suspiciously like it was made from the pelts of a hundred fluffy clouds, and rolled myself into a tight, human-sized burrito. I squeezed my eyes shut, willing my brain to fall into a peaceful, Ryker-less coma.I heard a soft, familiar chuckle of a devil, a sound that could either charm a snake or make a saint want to throw something. I kept my eyes clamped shut, pretending to be a particularly lumpy piece of furniture. To my surprise, he didn't come closer. The silence that followed was a small, precious gift, the kind you get from an enemy when they think you're not looking. I could finally breathe. My tense shoulders slumped a little, and I was just starting to drift o

He held me in place, his grip like iron, and I couldn't escape. My eyes were a witness to a horror I wished I could unsee. Every glance was a dagger to my heart. Each familiar face, now contorted in a grotesque display, made my stomach churn with a sickening mix of anger, grief, and disgust. The vibrant colors of their habits felt tainted, the air thick with the stench of cheap perfume and sin. I wanted to scream, to run, to bury my head in the ground and pretend none of this was real. But all I could do was stand there, paralyzed, as my world shattered around me. The innocent, loving sisters I knew were a fantasy, and this nightmare was my new reality."Do you see it now?" Ryker's voice was a low, guttural growl as he seized my chin, his fingers digging into my skin. He forced me to look, to witness the desecration of everything I believed in. "Where is the purity you spoke of? All I see are whores, starving for attention. They don't care who gives it to them—a decrepit old man, a ma

Meanwhile, Ryker sauntered into the attached bathroom, a cheerful tune escaping his lips as if he'd just had the best day of his life. The sound of the shower turning on was a stark, jarring contrast to the tense silence that had settled in the room, and the water ran for an agonizingly long time. When he finally emerged, a wave of cold dread washed over me, instantly dissolving all the calming thoughts and self-consolation I'd spent the last hour meticulously building. The memory of what had happened before he left flooded back, and my carefully constructed composure vanished in a puff of smoke. My scowl deepened as I remembered how this monster had violated me.“Hello there, kitten,” he purred, a taunting smirk playing on his lips. He jumped onto the bed with the uncivilized grace of a monkey. Calling him a monkey felt like the highest praise one could give him; he was so much worse. With a face like a hyena and a personality as venomous as a toad, there wasn't a single animal in th

That Ryker wasn't coming home was supposed to be my golden ticket to a peaceful night. A quiet house, a king-sized bed all to myself—it was a dream I’d been chasing the last two days. But as I finally lay down, pulling the duvet up to my chin and sinking into the plush mattress, my mind, of course, had other plans. It was like a switch had flipped the wrong way. Instead of the blissful silence and rest I'd craved, a highlight reel of every minor and major thing that had gone wrong in my life started playing behind my eyelids. The last encounter, his careless words, my own frustrated retort—each memory was a tiny, sharp stone in a quiet pond, sending out ripples of unease.I tossed, I turned, and I punched my pillow in frustration, trying to shove the unwanted thoughts from my head. The calm I'd expected was nowhere to be found, replaced by a restless energy that made my skin crawl. Every chirp of the crickets, rustle of the leaves outside my window felt magnified, each sound a tiny

My disgusted grimace was a mask I barely controlled, but his next move was what truly made my skin crawl. He licked his fingers clean, a slow, deliberate act that felt like a personal insult, a vulgar claim on the air, on everything in this room. My stomach churned, the small meal I’d been forced to eat threatening to come back up.“You’re disgusting,” I growled, the words a bitter taste in my mouth. “I thought you couldn’t sink any lower than forcefully marrying me, but you just stamped on my dignity as if it meant nothing.” A sickening realization dawned on me, and I felt a million phantom bugs crawling over every inch of my skin he had touched. He wasn't just a monster; he was a predator who reveled in the fear he inspired, in the utter helplessness of his victims. My outburst made the maids stiffen, their faces pale with terror. They looked at me as if I had just signed my own death warrant for speaking the truth. And if it came to that, so be it. This time, it wasn't just my ra

"You don't get it," Alessandra said, her voice laced with a weary resignation that made her seem much older than she looked. "We've been here forever, so we know how things work." She took a deep breath, and continued, "There's really only one rule that matters: once you're in a syndicate family, the only way out is death."I felt a chill run down my spine as she spoke, the reality of their situation settling in. "That's why we're all just dreamers," she said, a sad smile playing on her lips. "Some of us get lucky. They have connections and can assist the men on a mission, so they get to see the places we've only ever dreamed of." She paused, her eyes looking past me as if seeing a far-off memory. "We all live in hope that one day we'll get our chance to go, too. But the truth is, living outside this mansion is a dream none of us can afford. We love our lives here, and rebelling would only cost us our lives."“This place is hell,” I announced. “It's filled with only devils and sinne
