Chapter 2

Author: Emerald Gains
It felt like a bomb had gone off in my head, and my mind went completely blank.

Ian's name burned into me like a red-hot branding iron.

Ten years of feelings… Ten years of affection…

The gentle way he'd made his vow while embracing me. "You're the only woman in my world," he'd said.

The times he rushed home to hug me the moment he returned from a business trip…

Could it all have been fake?

A huge sense of betrayal and humiliation flooded over me like a tide. My hands and feet turned icy cold, and even breathing became difficult.

Upon noticing my ashen complexion, Jessica's smile grew even more triumphant. "What's wrong? Stunned? Have you now realized what a huge joke you've made of yourself? How dare you impersonate Ian's wife?

"Are you even worthy? You're a penniless wretch who can't even afford decent clothes, and you dare covet my man? Take a long look in the mirror before barking up the wrong tree!"

The surrounding mocking laughter felt like countless needles piercing every inch of my skin.

No, I wouldn't believe it! I had to ask him myself!

With trembling hands, I pulled my phone from the pocket of my shorts, found the number I knew by heart, and pressed call.

I wanted him to come. I wanted him to tell this woman, in front of everyone else, who his real wife was!

The dial tone beeped steadily from the phone. It rang once, then twice, then three times…

I felt my heart sink bit by bit with each sound, seemingly plunging into the endless abyss.

Ian always answered my calls instantly. Whether in a meeting or a negotiation, he would pick up immediately, even if just to tell me he was unavailable.

Jessica clicked her tongue and crossed her arms, looking down at me sarcastically. "Can't keep up the act anymore, right? Should I lend you a power bank for your phone?"

The security guards and onlooking guests wore even more mocking expressions on their faces.

"I told you she was faking it. She can't even get through to him on the phone."

"She probably just saved a fake number and is putting on a show for us."

Just as I was feeling despair, Jessica gracefully took out her own phone from her branded handbag.

"Take a good look at what the real owner of the hotel looks like," she said mockingly.

She lightly tapped the screen, dialed a number, then smugly pressed the speakerphone button.

It rang only once before the call connected instantly.

The deep, magnetic voice of a man rang out clearly through the speaker. "Hey, Jessie. What's up?"

My body stiffened abruptly. This voice…

Jessica immediately switched to a coquettish tone and complained into the phone, "Honey, there's someone at the hotel bullying me! There's this crazy woman who's dressed in rags, insisting she's the owner of the hotel. I told her to get lost, but she won't. What should I do?"

The man on the other end of the line chuckled softly. In a doting tone that carried unquestionable authority, he said, "Who dared to bully my dear Jessie? She's just some lunatic who came out of nowhere. Why bother with her?"

He paused, then his voice turned cold and merciless. "Since she's refusing to leave and even dares to impersonate you, teach her a lesson. Let her know that The Crown Imperial isn't a place for just any stray to run wild. Handle it as you see fit. If anything happens, I've got your back."

"Okay, honey! Love you!"

Jessica blew a kiss into the phone and hung up, thoroughly satisfied. She waved her phone and looked down smugly at me.

"Did you hear that? That's how Ian treats me! And you? You're just a joke!"

I ignored her taunts and stood stunned in place.

It was wrong. That voice was wrong!

It sounded very similar, but it definitely wasn't Ian's!

I had shared a bed with Ian for ten years. I knew the rhythm of his every breath and the content of every word he said in his sleep.

His voice was unique to him alone, containing a certain cold quality to it.

It was unlike the man on the phone, who, despite deliberate imitation, had an undisguised frivolity in his inflection.

What on earth was going on?

Life returned to calm, and Ian became even more clingy than before.Every morning, I had to wake up in his embrace, and every night, he had to hold me to fall asleep. He would postpone company matters whenever possible, and if he couldn't, he would bring them home to handle. It was as if he wanted to make up for all the quality time he owed me over the past ten years all at once. One day, while I was trimming roses in the garden, Ian hugged me from behind and said, "Lena, next week is our tenth wedding anniversary. What gift would you like?"He rested his chin on my shoulder, and his warm breath tickled my neck.I put down the pruning shears, turned around, and looked straight at him. "I don't want anything."He disagreed, saying, "That won't do. There must be something you want."I thought for a moment, then said with a smile, "Then… Give me another hotel."Ian noticeably stiffened up. Then, he frowned somewhat apologetically and replied, "Lena, don't joke about that."He th

What happened after was no longer any of my concern. Ian's wrath was something no one could withstand."Melvin is suspected of multiple crimes, including fraud, identity forgery, embezzlement, and intentional assault. There's a huge amount of money involved, and the circumstances are particularly severe. He has been formally arrested."Lucas adjusted his glasses, speaking in a calm tone as if he were merely relaying the weather. "With combined penalties for multiple crimes, the lawyer says he won't need to consider coming out for the rest of his life."I nodded. This outcome was what I had expected."What about his family?" I asked."His mother had a heart attack upon hearing about his arrest and didn't survive despite rescue efforts."Lucas paused, then continued, "His father was unable to handle the blow and had a mental breakdown, resulting in him being sent to a psychiatric hospital."His sister… was expelled from school. Because Melvin owed a large amount in high-interest

"I'm sorry, Lena." Ian's voice was terribly hoarse, filled with self-blame and sadness as he spoke. "I came too late. I'm sorry…"Behind him, several black-suited bodyguards immediately stepped forward. They pulled Melvin up, who was still collapsed on the floor, and Jessica, who was frozen in fear."Mr. Lambert… Spare me, Mr. Lambert!"Melvin finally found his voice and began frantically begging for mercy. "I was wrong! I'll never dare to do it again! Please, for the sake of the three years I drove for you, spare me this once!"Jessica also cried out, "Mr. Lambert, it's not my fault! It was all him! He deceived me! I didn't know anything!"Ian didn't even glance at them. All his senses were completely focused on me.He carefully took off his coat, wrapped it around me, then picked me up in his arms. "Let's go home," he said.He lowered his head and pressed a trembling kiss to my forehead. "Leave the rest to them."I leaned against his chest, listening to his steady, strong h

Well, wasn't that just great?I braced myself against the wall and shakily stood up. The intense pain made every movement feel like I was being torn apart, but I still straightened up.I looked at Melvin, the driver whom I had always treated well and who always received a holiday bonus. My voice wasn't loud, but it carried a bone-chilling coldness when I spoke again."Melvin, you've got quite the nerve. Did you think that by getting a face like my husband's, you could actually become him?"I'll tell you this—you'd better pray right now that I walk out of this door completely unharmed today. If I lose a single hair on my head, or get one more bruise on my body…"I carefully thought of my next words before saying, "Hey, Melvin. Is your mother still taking her heart medication on time?"At that, his face instantly turned pale.I continued, "And your father's kidney dialysis, three times a week. The cost isn't exactly low, is it?"Melvin's clenched fists betrayed the storm raging i

Jessica, like a startled chick, instantly dropped all her hostility. While crying sorrowfully, she threw herself into the man's arms. "Honey! You're finally here! You have no idea how awful this crazy woman has been! She not only impersonated me but also hit me. Look at my face…"She pointed at her own flawless face and distorted the truth. The man held her affectionately, gently patting her back as he comforted her softly. "There, there. Don't cry. With me here, no one can bully you."He looked up, his gaze sweeping past Jessica's shoulder and landing on me.That face was unmistakably Ian, whom I had loved for ten years. However, his gaze was filled with icy disgust and contempt, as if looking at a pile of repulsive garbage. "So you're the one bullying Jessie?" he asked in a tone as cold as ice.I felt my heart shatter completely at this moment.I looked at him and his familiar features, at the other woman nestled in his arms, and at the loathing expression he showed me—one

"What? Still not giving up?" Jessica mocked. When she saw me standing there dazed, she thought I was dumbfounded by the blow, and her disdainful expression deepened."Are you jealous? Jealous that my husband pampers me so much? I'll have you know that some people are born with silver spoons, while others are born with nothing! No matter how jealous you are, you can't change your fate!"At that, she lost her last shred of patience and waved a hand at the two security guards."Stop wasting words with her! Someone who disrupts the hotel's business like this should be taught a good lesson! Drag her to the storage room in the back!"She then turned to face me. "If you don't come up with money for the Internet costs today, don't even think about leaving through that door!""Yes, Ms. Shields!"The two security guards pounced on me like preying beasts.I instinctively stepped back, but they grabbed my arms from left and right. Their strength was terrifying, and my resistance was a futi
