The call ended, and Lina was already grinning.

“Damn, he has a nice voice,” she said dreamily, tossing Kara’s phone onto the couch.

But Kara didn’t smile. She was deep in thought. Lina caught the shift in her mood and tilted her head.

“What’s wrong? Is it about the job?”

“No, it’s not that,” she answered quickly, lowering herself onto the couch. “When my things fell that day… I only remember my phone… and my heels slipping out. That’s it. Nothing else.”

She glanced up to meet Lina’s eyes, who was frowning now.

“Okay… and?” she asked slowly.

Kara exhaled sharply. “Lina, think about it. First, he finds out where I live. Then somehow convinces me to call him. And now, out of nowhere… a PA job?”

Lina still didn’t get it.

“We literally googled him. He’s one of the top CEOs in the country. Powerful people can pull strings.”

“I’m not done,” Kara cut in, “The first time he saw me, he called me Emilia. And today… he did it again. What if he’s not actually seeing me? I mean, what if he thinks I’m someone else? What if he’s only helping because… because he believes I’m her?”

Lina just shrugged. “So what? Who the hell cares? Look, babe, all that matters is… you’ve got an Italian CEO with fine taste who tracked you down and offered you a job. A real job. Like, hello? Opportunities!” She gave a sly grin, winking.

Kara narrowed her eyes, longer then smacked her shoulder.

“Ow! What was that for?” She winced.

“You know exactly why. You’re only hyping this because of that guy — the one who delivered the envelope.”

“That’s not true.” Lina said, standing up already.

“Girl, I know you like I know the back of my hand. You don’t do favors unless there’s something in it for you.”

She groaned and covered her ears. “I’m not hearing this…”

“Well, I could help you get close to him once I get the job.” Kara offered, crossing her arms.

Lina turned around fast. “For real?”

“Yup. On one condition.”

Lina’s brows raised in suspicious, “And.. what's that?”

“You pay the full rent.”

Lina’s mouth dropped open. “You’ve got to be fvcking kidding me.”

“Are you in or not?”

“You’re acting all cocky now after I helped you call your knight in shining armor?”

“Fine. You win. But right now, I've got no money. I'll pay you back.”

She huffed, looking away.

“So?” Kara pressed. “Deal?”

“Fine. But you’ve got one week to get me his number.”

She grinned. “Deal, baby girl!”

They laughed and she jumped onto Lina’s back playfully. For a moment, things felt normal again.

“Looks like we are about to upgrade our relationship status,” Lina teased as they started clearing the dining table.

“Maybe you. Not me.”

“Why not?”

“He can’t date me.”

“Oh, come on. The guy’s gorgeous.”

“I never said he wasn’t,” Kara countered, grabbing plates. “I just don’t see it happening. I mean… ugh.” She let out a tired sigh. “You’re starting to put all these weird ideas in my head. He didn’t even ask me out.”

“Yet,” Lina added with a mischievous grin.

Kara rolled her eyes, biting down a smile. Men weren’t her goal right now. Only money was. In the middle of their clean up, she received his message.

Monday came faster and the interview went smooth. Suspiciously smooth. She was barely asked any tough questions, and the contract was waiting for her like it had been printed before she arrived. There was even talk of accommodation and it all felt too good to be true. Still, like Lina said, maybe it was finally her turn to be happy and her dream really had come true. Stepping out of the building, she strode out gently then out of nowhere, a sleek black car rolled up in front of her and parked. Before she could react, the window rolled down, and her stomach dropped. Jairo. “Hey,” he greeted, grinning. His presence was so unexpected. He leaned over and opened the passenger door, making Kara stared at it. He wasn't asking. He was telling her to come in. She stood still for a few seconds unsure. Maybe out of courtesy, her legs moved before her brain could protest. “Hey.” She returned, sliding into the passenger seat. Jairo didn’t reply and just stared at her. His eyes dr

Kara pushed the door open and stepped into the apartment, holding it open for Jairo. He followed, tall and composed, but somehow his presence seemed too large for the tiny space. His eyes scanned the room — simple, a little cramped, but clean. Exactly what he expected. She deserves so much more, he thought. His eyes paused on a pair of men’s slippers by the door. His gaze shifted to Kara with a questioning look. She followed his line of sight and quickly spoke. “Oh… those… my roommate bought them for her ex. He used to come around. They’re not together anymore. We just kept them there for when we have male guests.” As soon as the words left her mouth, she cringed internally. Why am I explaining this? Jairo, however, only picked up on two words. “Do you have male friends, Kara?” His tone had a sudden edge to it; harder than he meant. In that split second, he was already doubting the background report Donald gave him, the one that said she was single. Kara blinked at

Jairo quickly snatched his phone on the table when he got a call from an unknown number, swiping the screen with zero hesitation.“Emilia?” His voice cracked with hope.Right then, Donald walked in, pausing a few steps from the door when he noticed how he was hunched forward in his chair. But he said nothing. Jairo didn’t even glance at him only focused on the sound of the voice he was so desperate to hear. The silence stretched for too long. “It… it’s Kara Bennett, Mr. Jairo Vitale.”Warmth surged through his chest, curling under his ribs immediately he heard her voice.“How are you, Kara?” the calmness in his voice was a contrast to how pounding his heart was.“I’m fine… sir. How are you too?” She was worried about him.“Hearing from you makes everything perfect. And there’s no sir. It’s Jairo.”A second passed. “Well… I can’t call a man as big as you by your first name.”He smirked. “This was the same man who sabotaged your interview.”There was a long pause before Kara spoke u

Four Days Later“You’ve got three seconds to talk. You sold the port codes to Anthonio, didn't you?” Jairo asked coldly, flicking his lighter to life. The man tied to the chair spat blood, sneering through a busted lip with defiance thick in his eyes.“Uccidimi e basta. Non mi tirerai fuori un bel niente, capo.”[Just kill me. You won’t get any damn thing out of me, boss]Jairo let out a low, amused chuckle. He loved this part. He ran the blade of his knife through the flame, the steel glinting red-hot. He brought it close to his face, inspecting it from the side as his gaze shifted back to the man.“That so?” he murmured. “Then you’re useless to me.”Without warning, the blade plunged into the man’s throat. One swift, practiced motion. The man’s body jerked violently, his eyes widening as the defiance in his eyes melted into sheer fear. Jairo watched, a slow grin forming.“I heard you’ve got a beautiful wife and a daughter,” He twisted the knife, “I hope you remembered to tell them

Kara looked down when she couldn't keep up with the staring contest.“I don’t know what just happened, but… maybe you mistook me for someone else. I'm not the name you mentioned.” She explained, picking up her bag and the heels she had tossed aside earlier. Jairo didn't move but stood up with her, watched her, stunned and silent. She turned to leave, but his voice stopped her.“Are you hurt somewhere?” His words were clear this time. She turned around to meet his forest green eyes. Somehow, the gentleness behind his words made her chest tightened.“Yes,” she whispered with a nod, “I'm hurt in here.” She pointed to her chest, her voice cracking as tears threatened to rise again. Her heart ached from everything she had endured.Jairo’s gaze followed her gesture. Her chest? His brows pulled together. Had he hit her?He glanced quickly at his car, wondering if he had injured her without realizing.“We need to get you to the hospital.” He told her with urgency but she shook her head.“My
