Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Orange Tart
A flash of reluctance crossed Alain's face. He glanced at me, keeping his hands at his sides.

Jonathan pouted, his eyes glistening with tears. "Dad, don't you love me anymore?"

Mabel met my gaze and shivered. Her hand quickly clamped over Jonathan's mouth. "I'm sorry, but the kindergarten requires a family photo and a song. I didn't want to intrude, but Alain didn't check his phone. The homework is due tomorrow, so..."

Mabel lowered her eyes, guilt etched on her face. I maintained a stern expression, struggling to contain my anger.

They had been together all day, and now she remembered the homework.

She continued, "Could you do me a favor? I don't want Jonathan to be seen as a fatherless child."

My anger exploded. "Get lost! All of you!"

Jonathan had a father who helped with homework and attended every milestone.

In contrast, Jeff had a father who missed every parent-teacher meeting, never touched his homework, and was never there when he was sick. He was more like a fatherless child.

Alain covered Jonathan's ears, his expression darkening. "There's a child present. Watch your language."

The rims of Mabel's eyes reddened, and she tightened her grip on Jonathan. "Marie, I know you hate me. Hit me or cuss me out. I'll take it all. Just let Jonathan out of it. He is innocent."

Her shoulders shook as she buried her face and wept. "You've been a mother too. I believe you understand how I feel."

Suddenly, Jonathan jumped down and charged at me, slamming his head into my belly. I stumbled, barely managing to steady myself with the table, as pain shot through me.

Before I could react, his fists began to rain down on me, each blow amplifying my discomfort. "Don't bully my mom, you witch! I won't let you steal my dad!"

I pushed him away despite the pain, my face pale as I clutched my belly.

He fell to the ground, wailing, "I hate you! You took my dad away and bullied my mom. My family fell apart because of you. I'm not a happy little boy anymore."

Alain scooped him up, patting his back. "Don't cry, Jonathan. I will protect you."

His cold gaze sliced toward me. "Bullying my son comes with a price!"

"I'm sorry for putting you into this, sweetheart," Mabel sobbed, clutching Jonathan. "We're going home."

Alain's expression softened. He pulled them both into his arms. "No, don't go. This is your home now."

I watched their display of family affection with bitter sarcasm. The sharp pain in my belly made every detail painfully clear.

Sensing my gaze, Alain awkwardly released Mabel and shouted at me. "Marie, you're vicious! Why take adult problems out on a child? He is too young to understand anything."

Tears blurred my vision as I glanced at the boy in his arms. While Alain wasn't paying attention, Jonathan stuck his tongue out at me.

"What kind of child demands to sleep with you at night?" I shot back. "What kind of child pushes others and looks for praise? Sure enough, a mistress's child only knows dirty tricks!"

Veins bulged on Alain's forehead. "Enough! He just misses his dad and wants to protect his mom. I know you can't get over your loss, but that doesn't mean you can vent it on anyone."

That afternoon, a disheveled Mabel cornered me in a café.She glanced around nervously, relaxing only when she confirmed Alain was not with me.I sized her up discreetly. She looked like she had just gone through something terrifying. Fear was evident in her eyes, and her mental state seemed precarious."I'll give Alain back to you," she said, her voice trembling. "In exchange, I want one million dollars. Once I have the money, I'll disappear forever and never interfere in your marriage again."I was unimpressed. "I don't have a hobby of recycling garbage."She frowned. "Stop pretending. $900,000 is my final offer. I know you can afford it."I stood up to leave. "Keep whatever you stole. I'm not interested."She panicked, grabbing my arm. "How much can you offer?"I shook her off, picked up the glass of water on the table, and splashed it straight into her face. "Keep the garbage you took!"Enraged, she snatched another glass and tried to splash me back. Just then, a steady ha

"Are these enough to make rose petal jam?" Erik held out some freshly plucked petals in his palm.I examined them happily, my fingertips accidentally brushing his skin. His face flushed a deep red."Marie!" Alain charged in, grabbed Erik by the collar, and punched him hard. "How dare you covet my wife?""Alain, stop!" I reached out to separate them, but they were already tangled in a fierce scuffle.Moments later, Erik relied on his years of training to subdue his opponent. Alain kept cursing even in defeat. "You'll pay for seducing my wife!""Uncle Erik, are you alright?" I asked worriedly.Alain's curses stopped, and his eyes widened. It was normal that he didn't recognize Erik. The latter rarely appeared in public, not even at my wedding.Erik stood up and dusted off his clothes. "I'm fine."His gaze fell on Alain's bruised and swollen face. In the next moment, his body went limp, and he collapsed into my arms. "My head is spinning."I quickly supported him. "I'll call a do

"I..." Mabele stammered, struggling to form a response.Alain snatched the luggage from her hands, opened it, and saw the pile of valuables inside. His eyes narrowed, and pain surged through his chest. "Why?"Mabele lowered her head, speechless. Alain reached out to grab Jonathan, but someone else beat him to it.The man scooped up Jonathan and planted a kiss on his cheek. "My son indeed. You look just like me!"Jonathan looked at Mabele in confusion. A glance showed the obvious resemblance, especially around the eyes and brows."What did you say?" Alain swayed, colors draining from his face. The man spoke haughtily. "I didn't know Mabel was carrying my child while flirting with others. Now that I know Jonathan is my seed, I have every right to take him home and claim my heritage." Alain looked at Mabele, who stepped back in trepidation. Clearly, she knew this man.His body began to tremble with rage. All this time, he had been raising another man's son, while his own flesh an

A metal object hit the floor with a resounding crash. Alain stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, his face dark and brooding."Release the news about her affair," he commanded. "I'd like to see whether she values the Perez family's reputation or that pretty boy."His assistant nodded, fear written across his face.Mabel gently rubbed Jonathan's face, urging him to go with the assistant. Once they were gone, she wrapped her arms around Alain from behind. "Don't get so worked up. Marie is just jealous and throwing a tantrum. Just don't be so nice to me when she is around."Alain turned around, covering her mouth to stop her following words. "What's wrong with me treating you well? You're kind and gentle. I want to give you the best. Do I need her permission to care for whoever I like? Who does she think she is?"A happy smile spread across Mabel's face as she leaned against his chest, her hand soothingly stroking him. "I know you're a good man. You paid for my education and gave me

"Your wife has an ectopic pregnancy, and you didn't even know? Have you ever taken her for checkups? A little longer, and it wouldn't have been just a miscarriage. She could have died! What kind of husband are you?"The doctor's angry voice echoed down the hallway, directed at Erik Perez. The usually cold man lowered his head in silence, regret clear on his face.I turned away, my eyes hollow as my hands rested on my flat belly. It was confusing. How was I pregnant after years of sleeping in separate rooms from Alain?Fragmented memories flashed through my mind. On our wedding anniversary, I took my sleeping pills and drifted off.In a haze, I felt someone lying beside me. But when I woke up, all that remained was a faint scent of alcohol.Realization struck me as I clasped my fingers. Alain, inebriated, had come to the wrong room and slept with me.A sharp headache stabbed through my skull, and I clutched it in agony. After losing Jeff, I had been on psychiatric medication for

With feigned anxiety, Mabel pulled Jonathan from Alain's arms and apologized to me profusely, "I'm truly sorry. Jonathan is too little to understand. Please don't hold it against him. I never wanted to ruin your family. Just please let him see his dad once in a while."I watched with cold detachment. When I didn't budge, she amped up her act. "Please don't divorce Alain. You are his whole world; he cannot live without you. Jonathan and I don't matter."She clutched Jonathan protectively, but I remained silent. In a flash, she grabbed him and slapped his bottom hard. "If you're not satisfied, I'll help you get even!"Jonathan wailed, "Mom, don't hit me! I'm sorry. I shouldn't have clung to Dad."Mabel choked back her tears, but her slap grew harder. "This is what happens when you misbehave!"Alain snatched him away. "What are you doing? Don't hit the child!"Mabel glared. "Will you do it again?"Jonathan ran back to her and clutched her hand. "Mom, I won't do it again.""Good. N
