John's POV

John's POV

I saw Elena stop walking before she even made it to the main aisle. Her shoulders pulled tight under her sweater, and all the light left her face.

I stood up, setting my glass down on the table. I walked three steps, coming up right beside her, and placed myself directly in front of Julian.

The man stopped dead in his tracks. His blue eyes were wild, staring straight past my shoulder at Elena.

His eyes snapped to my face and looked me up and down. I could see the gears tur

Elena's POVI sat across from Chloe and wiped my mouth with a paper napkin. The floorboards under my chair creaked when I moved. Chloe set her fork down on her plate and looked at me. "Look at you.""What about me?" I asked."You look different," she said. She reached across the table and touched my wrist. "Your face isn't tight. You don't look like you're waiting for someone to yell at you."I looked down at my plate. "I'm just tired from carrying boxes.""No," Chloe said, shaking her head. "It's not that. You handed in your notice. You actually did it, Elena. I was worried you were going to stay at Jenkins Holdings forever.""I couldn't stay," I said. "Not after what I saw. I have twenty-seven days left on my notice, but at least I don't have to sleep under his roof anymore.""Well, you look alive now," Chloe said. She took a sip of her water and leaned back in her chair. "You look like yourself again."I picked up a piece of bread and tore it. "It feels strange. I wake up in the m

Julian's POVThe leather seat of the car was cold. I sat in the corner with my hands between my knees, trying to stop the shaking. My tie was pulled sideways, and the seam under my right armpit had split when the bouncers dragged me through the lobby.Marie sat on the far side of the backseat, pressed against the door. She held her black purse against her chest and looked out the side window. She didn't look at me once."Did you see them?" I asked. "Did you see the way he moved?"Marie didn't answer."He stepped out of the way on purpose," I said. "He didn't even try to hit me back. He just let me fall so I would look bad in front of everyone."I closed my eyes, but the picture was right there. I saw the floor of the bar. I felt my shoes sliding on the polish. I heard the loud thud my hip made when I hit the ground, and I heard Elena laughing."Say something, Marie," I said. She kept her eyes on the streetlights outside. "There is nothing to say, Julian.""He's just a laborer," I said

Elena's POVThe walk back to my new building was quiet. The cold night air hit my face, cutting straight through the lingering heat from the bar.I kept my arm wrapped through John's. Every few steps, my thumb brushed against the coarse fabric of his dark jacket. He didn't rush his stride. He walked at a steady, easy pace, matching my steps on the damp sidewalk."He actually thought he could hit you," I said softly, looking straight ahead at the yellow streetlamps."He tried," John said. His voice was calm, carrying no anger at all. "He put everything he had into that first swing."A short laugh broke out of my throat before I could stop it. "And he missed. Four times.""He was swinging with his eyes closed," John said, a small grin pulling at the corner of his mouth. "A man like that doesn't know how to move when someone doesn't run away from him."We stopped at the corner to wait for a passing taxi. I looked up at the tall glass buildings lining the street. For four years, those bui

I could see the gears turning behind his eyes. His mouth pressed into a thin line, and his jaw tightened up.A woman stepped out from behind his shoulder. She held his arm tight against her side, her chin lifted high. She looked at Elena, her lips curving into a fake smile."Elena?" the woman said. "I didn't think you frequented places like this anymore. Don't you have work to prepare for on Monday?"Elena didn't answer her. She didn't even look at the woman. Her eyes stayed glued to the man in the suit. The man didn't

  • You Chose Her, I Took Your Empire   St. Regis

Elena's POVWe walked up the wide stone steps of the St. Regis hotel. A doorman opened the door for us as we passed into the lobby. The lobby smelled of polished wood and warm leather. My feet slowed down on the thick carpet. My stomach tightened up a little. This was Julian’s world. For four years, every venue like this meant I had to check my coat, straighten my dress, and get ready to take notes on my phone. Places like this were for work, corporate dinners, and quiet threats from board members.John stopped beside me. He didn't look at the crystal lights or the marble pillars. He just pulled off his jacket, threw it over one arm, and looked down at me with a calm smile."You okay?" he asked."I am fine," I said. I pulled my shoulders back. "Just used to coming to places like this with a clipboard.""No clipboards tonight," John said. He rested his hand against the small of my back, guiding me gently past the front desk toward the heavy oak doors of the bar. "Just drinks."His hand

  • You Chose Her, I Took Your Empire   I Know A Place

Elena's POVOur laughter died down as we stood up straight, both of us holding the back of our heads where our foreheads had collided.John rubbed his forehead, wiping away a thin sheen of sweat."That box of books was heavy," he said, breathing out through his mouth. "My head is still spinning from that hit.""You were the one who dropped your end too fast," I said. I felt a stitch in my side from laughing so hard. My legs were sore from walking up and down the stairs. "I told you to wait on three.""I heard two," he said. He smiled. He looked around the kitchen again, opening the fridge door with his thumb. It was empty, save for a single jug of tap water. "Okay, we are done. No more boxes tonight. Let me take you out to get some dinner.""No," I said, shaking my head right away. "You spent four hours lifting my bed frame and carrying my dresser up those narrow stairs. I am paying for dinner."John bent his right arm, flexing his bicep through his damp cotton sleeve. "Are you kiddin
