Chapter 3

Author: Footsteps Forest
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone. Then, Adrian's arrogant laugh was heard.

"You should have agreed to it earlier if you knew that this was going to happen sooner or later."

I interrupted him and said, "But I have one condition. I want this consultation to be live-streamed online."

Adrian's laughter stopped abruptly.

"Live-streamed?" he echoed, his voice turning cold. "Don't you know that you're being attacked left and right online right now, Stella Knight? And you still think that isn't enough? You want them to curse you even more?"

I glanced out the window, my lips curling slightly upward.

"Wouldn't that be something you want? Millions of people would see me finally giving in and bowing to you and treating your sister's treatment in real time.

"And I could even use the opportunity to admit my faults to the online community and give myself a way out of this."

Adrian fell silent. Seconds later, he let out an extremely pleased hum.

"You're a person of principle, Stella. Fine. Since you want to be openly criticized and humiliated that much, I will grant you your wish."

"One more thing," I said, cutting in. "You must not let Adeline know about the livestream. She's a patient. If she knows that millions of people are watching her, I'm afraid she will get agitated and overstimulated. And if anything happens to her because of that, I refuse to be held liable for it."

Adrian agreed at once without even lingering on the thought.

Early the next morning, I arrived at the appointment venue that he picked, which was the VIP ICU room on the top floor of Gemmington Central Hospital.

Two familiar people were standing at the door. It was a couple in their 50s. The man was tall and strong, wearing a dark gray wool sweater, while the woman was wearing a navy blue coat, looking poised and elegant.

They were Jeremy Duran and Florence White, Adrian's parents.

"You must be Dr. Stella Knight," Florence said gently to me.

I nodded. "I am."

She gave me a once-over and nodded slightly.

"I'm Adeline's mother. I've heard of you, Dr. Knight. Adeline is our daughter, and we've brought her up since she was very young. We're all very sincere about inviting you over for her consultation today."

She retrieved a business card from her purse and handed it to me, but I didn't take it. She didn't seem to mind, however.

"If you treat Adeline, you won't have to worry about your reputation or the expenses afterward. And we will also deal with your dismissal from this hospital.

"I can also guarantee to you that Duran Group's resources in the national medical system will all be at your disposal. This is how we would like to prove our sincerity to you."

I glanced at her.

Unfortunately for her, I didn't lack anything she was offering me.

"I'm here for a consultation today, Mrs. Duran. We will only discuss other matters afterward."

Florence's eyes flickered, but she quickly regained her composure a short while later.

Jeremy coughed lightly when he heard me say that. His eyes weren't as gentle as Florence's.

"Dr. Knight, what my wife said is only her intention. But what we mean is that the Durans will not mistreat you if you can cure Adeline of her illness."

He paused for a bit before continuing, "Your reputation is already destroyed. And you're the one who asked for this to be live-streamed. It's also your final chance to turn things around for yourself.

"If you fail to treat her, then the entire country will witness it in real-time, and you will also never find a footing in the medical field anywhere anymore."

I remained standing, holding my gaze with him for three whole seconds.

"I will only be able to tell if I can treat your daughter after taking a look at her, Mr. Duran."

Then, I walked right past him and pushed the room door open.

Jeremy frowned slightly like he was deliberating about something. Then, he followed me in with Florence by his side. They didn't say another word more and sat quietly by the side.

Adrian was peeling an apple for Adeline next to her hospital bed. He glanced up at me before his gaze flickered toward the air conditioner vent and then the decorative ornament on the bedside table.

He had to have hidden the cameras there.

I then turned and walked over to Dad. He hadn't said a word through the entire ordeal as he just leaned against his cane, watching me handle everything.I could see his eyes reflecting with both relief and heartache."Let's go, Dad."He nodded before turning around and glaring at the Duran family. "Knight Medical Group will cease all business dealings with Duran Group from today onward. I wish you the best of luck."The bodyguards then led us out of the room.…That livestream became a nationally sensational farce. But that wasn't just the end of it all.Adeline was officially kicked out of the family that day. They even reported her to the police for fraud. And because she'd been taking digitalis and other medications for such a long time, her heart was indeed suffering from irreversible organic damage. Her 20-year-long feigned illness had finally materialized, and it would continue plaguing her for the rest of her life.Three days after the livestream, the old woman who thre

Adeline's face turned ashen the moment she heard me mention the livestream. She immediately turned her head around, her eyes darting around the room before finally realizing where the cameras had been hidden. Her eyes were filled with fear.Dr. Pearson stared at the blood analysis report and finally lowered his head. The room was silent for a few seconds. Then, Adeline broke down. "Mom, Dad… I can explain…"She fell to her feet and crawled over to Jeremy, tugging at his pants. "I didn't mean to do it! I was just scared that I would lose you… I was afraid that she would come back and take away everything from me…"Tears streamed down her face, but this time, nobody was there to wipe them away for her.Jeremy looked at her, a hint of disgust surfacing in his eyes. "Since you're not even sick in the first place, you might as well stand up."He took a step backward, his pant leg slipping from Adeline's grasp. He continued, saying, "The Duran family raised you for 20 years, and I be

I straightened my disheveled collar and walked over to the old woman. The bodyguards had seated her down on a chair. She was still shaking, but she wasn't crying anymore."Ma'am, you said your son died yesterday. May I know the reason why you aren't handling his funeral arrangements now and instead found your way to this VIP private room that's not even open to the public?"I paused for a bit before continuing, "And since you said that I was the doctor who treated your son, may I know what his name was? What was he diagnosed with? And what medicine did I give him?"The old woman's eyes began to flicker and dart away. She didn't dare to look me in the eyes and instead glanced all over the room."M-My son… My son's name is…" she stammered. "H-He had a heart disease.""What kind of heart disease? A myocardial infarction? Heart failure? Arrhythmia? Or something else?""I-It's just a heart disease!""Then, what medication did I prescribe for him?""I… How am I supposed to know what

Less than two minutes later, there was a loud commotion outside the hospital room. Someone was crying and shouting loudly in the hallway, and the sound only grew louder and louder. The door was then thrown open with a loud slam.An elderly woman with gray hair and dressed in an old coat stumbled in, her face covered in tears, her eyes red and swollen, and her mouth downturned in an ugly yowl. Two bodyguards pretended to try and hold her back, but she flung them off without any issues."Stella Knight! Give me my son back!"The old lady screamed my name the moment she appeared at the door and lunged at me, grabbing at my doctor's coat. She was very rough and much too strong for her appearance."How could you just prescribe some random medicine to my son to get rid of us simply because we couldn't afford to bribe you! He died last night! You're the one who killed him!"She cried and screamed loudly while yanking roughly at me. Her nails dug deep into my flesh as she tore at my arms

Dr. Pearson's eyes flickered. "This is slander, Dr. Knight! I absolutely did not do such a thing! Mr. and Mrs. Duran, this doctor here is questioning my professional ethics!"Adeline also sat up, her face pale and lips pallid, her voice filled with anger and grievance. "Dr. Knight! It's one thing to target me, but why must you drag Dr. Pearson into this as well? You say that I'm faking my illness? What proof do you have?""Proof?"I retrieved my phone from my pocket, casually tapping on a voice recording. The room was filled with Adeline's voice at once."Dr. Knight, I know that you're very good at your job, but I'm just letting you know that my illness isn't exactly that serious."When you come in for my consultation tomorrow, I hope that you will tell Mom, Dad, and Adrian that my condition has only worsened further and that I need to be resting in complete solidarity without any further stimulation."If you help me with this, I will personally transfer another five million dol

"What?"The look on Adrian's face changed at once. He stared at me with tightly furrowed brows. "Are you serious, Dr. Knight?"I pointed at the medical reports and shoved them toward him. "I said, Adeline Duran is not sick at all."Silence ensued for a couple of seconds.Adeline coughed twice and spoke as though she were squeezing the words out of her mouth, "Forget about it, Adrian… I don't think Dr. Knight can treat me after all… Don't make it hard for her anymore."Adrian grabbed her hand and turned to me with a cold smirk."Can't you see just how pale Adeline's face is now, Dr. Knight? And do none of the other hospital reports and top expert consultations mean anything to you? You still dare to say that she's not sick?"If you don't have the confidence to treat her, just say that you can't. What's the point of coming up with a blatant lie like this?"The live comments continued exploding online."What the hell is wrong with this doctor? How could she say that advanced hear
