Chapter 2

Author: Dottie
Yelena had her hand on mine. But the moment she saw the screen, she froze before immediately turning around to answer the call.

Julian Smith’s teasing voice came from the other end of the line.

“Yelena, they said you went all the way home to get me a present? What’s taking so long?!

“Hurry back. All the food’s on the table. Everyone’s waiting for you. Today is my birthday, you know?”

After the call ended, a slight awkwardness crossed her face, and she looked at me.

While she hesitated to speak, a second call came in.

She held her phone and said to me in a low voice, “I’ll ask the butler to come get you in a bit. Just stay home and wait. I’ll bring you something good to eat tonight.”

Right after that, she turned around in a hurry. She answered the call as she strode away.

I propped myself up on my elbows and slowly crawled toward the edge of the rooftop.

The cloying laughter that had tormented me day and night along with the searing pain all over my body surged back.

It had been five years.

I had been trapped in that New Year’s Eve night just before I turned eighteen for five whole years.

I looked back at the figure who had walked away without hesitation. I chuckled lightly with teary eyes.

“It’s okay, Yelena…”

The moment she heard my voice and turned around, I tumbled over the edge without any hesitation.

“Felix!”

The last thing I remembered was Yelena’s anguished face and her hoarse, desperate scream.

The wind roared past my ears.

My consciousness faded, and I closed my eyes.

It felt like I was having a very long dream.

In my dream, Yelena was frivolous and unruly. She was obsessed with fun and was rarely ever home. As such, she had received numerous punishments.

However, the same sister silently took over all responsibilities after our parents died in an accident.

She went from walking into the kitchen with disdain at first to making full meals with ease.

She went from someone who used to be careless and could not be bothered with anything to kneeling and crawling up a thousand-step stone staircase until her legs turned raw and bled.

She did all that just to pray to God to save my life because I was always sickly.

Yelena was clumsy yet earnestly learning to be a good sister. She gave me every bit of security and favor that she could think of.

She even worried about me being lonely. So, when my father’s illegitimate son, Julian, showed up at our door, she let him stay eventually, despite the disgust in her eyes.

Julian was no pushover, though.

He would suddenly slap himself in the face when Yelena walked in, and he would tearfully accuse me of it. “Felix hit me…”

He would hide his watch in my schoolbag before he found it with exaggerated surprise and cried, “Felix stole my watch.”

Yet, it did not matter how well he acted. He even complained to Yelena that I had taken the lead to bully him at school. But all he got was a scoff from her. “Quit the act.”

That was until New Year’s Eve when the whole family gathered for dinner. Julian collapsed out of nowhere.

The family doctor examined him and removed a special type of silver needle from the back of his head.

It was the first time Yelena ever lost her temper at me.

“Felix Smith, I gave you that needle two days ago! What do you have to say for yourself now?”

In the middle of our fight, she flipped the table and stormed out.

I ran after her and tried to grab her and explain, but I was dragged into that nightmarish alley.

I struggled awake from a long haze. Before my vision even focused, Yelena’s furious voice slammed into my ear.

“Felix Smith!”

I turned sideways in a daze.

Yelena was standing by the hospital bed and looking unusually disheveled.

Her eyes were teary, and her voice trembled badly.

“Felix, you really went all out just to compete with Julian for my attention!

“You clearly knew there was a landing platform below the rooftop and you couldn’t have died from that fall. You jumped on purpose just to ruin Julian’s birthday party, didn’t you?

“Julian is right next door. The moment he heard you jump, he fainted from shock! Are you happy now?

“Haven’t you caused enough trouble over these years?

“If you really want to die, find a quiet place and don’t bother anyone on your way out!”

I stared at her blankly, and I was unable to utter a single word for a long time.

In the silence, Julian’s call came again.

“Yelena, is Felix awake? Is he okay?

“When can we go home?”

The moment his voice rang out, all the anger on Yelena’s face evaporated.

“What could possibly be wrong with him? He was just throwing a tantrum and trying to scare us. I’ve already talked some sense into him.

“I’ll throw you a bigger birthday party in a couple of days. I’m packing up now. We’re going home.”

The call ended.

The warmth on her face instantly faded, and she glared at me.

“Stay here and reflect on what you’ve done!

“If you dare cause any more trouble, don’t ever bother coming home again!”

After that, she adjusted my IV drip violently.

Only when the flow slowed down did she lower her hand. She turned around and slammed the door behind her.

I stared at the still-rattling door and barely managed a bitter smile.

My gaze slowly drifted to the fruit knife not far away, and I thought to myself, ‘Don’t worry, Yelena.

‘This time, I’ll die quietly.

‘I won’t bother any of you anymore.’

He was so scared that he screamed. Then, he grabbed his bag and tried to run, but Yelena yanked him back.“I was wrong! Yelena, I know I was wrong! Please save me!”He slumped to the floor and cried at the top of his lungs. He crawled to Yelena’s feet and clutched the hems of her pants tightly.“Yelena, help me! You said you’d forgive me no matter what I did!”Yelena let out a cold laugh and kicked his hands away.“You faked your illness. You framed and killed my own brother!”She suddenly reached out to grip his neck tightly, and her eyes were filled with fury.Julian only snapped out of his daze when the police dragged him away. His pupils instantly dilated in fear.“No, you can’t take me! That night, Yelena did not sleep. She dipped gauze in warm water before she gently cleaned every single wound on my body on her own. They were old and new as well as overlapping and intersecting. Some were even deep enough to reveal bone. After she cleaned me up, she contacted the funeral home, chose a graveyard, and arranged for the simplest procedure. She did not inform anyone.By the time the sun rose, her eyes were fully bloodshot after she finished taking care of everything. She pushed open the door and wanted to go to Julian, the “good little brother” whom she had protected and trusted all these years. As soon as the door opened, a tearful figure threw himself into her arms.“Yelena, where did you go? I was so scared by myself…”Julian lifted his face, which was full of tears. There were a few clear swollen red finger marks on his cheeks.“When you weren’t around, Felix came and bullied me again.“He stormed into my room, grabbed my hair, and slapped me many times. He

The phone in Yelena’s pocket started to vibrate, and the buzzing snapped her out of her daze. She took out her phone and threw it aside without looking at it.However, her finger accidentally hit the answer button.A strange, rough male voice echoed through the room.“Julian, we agreed that you’d pay up after we faked the car accident and bribed the doctors to falsify the medical records. It’s been half a day. Where’s the money?“You’re not trying to stiff us, are you?“I’m telling you. We’ve got more than just the evidence for this job on our hands! We still have the videos from back when you paid us to ‘spice things up’ and mess that guy up for good!“If you dare pull any tricks, you won’t get off easy!”Yelena stared blankly at the phone screen. Only then did she realize that she had taken the wrong phone in her haste. This was Julian’s phone. The caller hung up as he cursed. When she called back again, all she received was a busy signal. She sat on the cold floor while

“Felix…” Yelena’s voice trembled. She stared at my face, as though she was searching for some sign that I was just throwing a tantrum or playing a trick on her. After a long moment, she finally snapped back to reality. She lunged forward and held her trembling fingers under my nose. There was no breath. She anxiously pressed her fingers to the side of my neck. There was no pulse.Yelena instantly fell straight to the floor as if all her strength had been drained. Her fall was so violent that she knocked over the nightstand beside her.The food scattered everywhere and left a mess on the floor. It was only at this time that she saw the shattered glass and the fruit knife under the bed. Both the glass shards and the knife were stained with dried blood.Everything had been too chaotic earlier, so no one had cleaned up.Something seemed to occur to her, and she staggered back to her feet. Her hands shook as she rolled up the sleeve on my other arm.My bone-deep wound was full

There were screams, hurried footsteps, and the pungent smell of medicine.I was soon surrounded by a swarm of white figures. My wound was roughly stitched up, and I received countless injections that were barely keeping me alive.Bits and pieces of conversation drifted into my ears.“Miss Smith is really unlucky. I heard that they got into a car accident when she was on the way home with her step brother, and his old illness flared up on the spot.”“Don’t bring it up. The doctor said they needed a bone marrow transplant to save his life. Miss Smith and the other brother are the only matches in the whole hospital.”“She passed out three times during the procedure but still refused to switch to the other brother. She said he’s weak and afraid of pain. He wouldn’t be able to take it.”“But Mr. Julian Smith’s condition seems to be getting worse…”The door opened again.Someone stumbled to my bedside and covered my eyes.Yelena’s voice was hoarse with exhaustion.“Felix, don’t be

A nurse had probably heard the noise.I held my breath. However, I soon heard Yelena’s impatient voice from the hallway.“He recovered a long time ago. I think he’s just faking it. He’s causing trouble over and over again. He just can’t stop.“Don’t bother with him. The more you care, the worse he gets.“Julian, the driver’s at the door. Let’s go.”The footsteps faded away, and no one pushed the door open.I stared straight at the knife nearby.I looked at it for a long time until my eyes felt sore and became swollen.Yelena had been getting careless lately. In my memory, ever since I started self-harming, she had never left anything within my sight that I could use to hurt myself.I tried to push myself up again, but pain er
