Chapter 3

Author: Dottie
I struggled to get up and fell off the bed with a heavy thud.

The IV needle tore out of the back of my hand and splattered drops of blood across the bedsheet.

In the end, I still could not stand.

Just then, footsteps approached from outside the door. A nurse had probably heard the noise.

I held my breath.

However, I soon heard Yelena’s impatient voice from the hallway.

“He recovered a long time ago. I think he’s just faking it. He’s causing trouble over and over again. He just can’t stop.

“Don’t bother with him. The more you care, the worse he gets.

“Julian, the driver’s at the door. Let’s go.”

The footsteps faded away, and no one pushed the door open.

I stared straight at the knife nearby.

I looked at it for a long time until my eyes felt sore and became swollen.

Yelena had been getting careless lately.

In my memory, ever since I started self-harming, she had never left anything within my sight that I could use to hurt myself.

I tried to push myself up again, but pain erupted from deep inside my body and the old injuries in my legs.

My arms weakened, and I crumpled back down.

My whole body hurt. I curled up on the floor and struggled to catch my breath for a long while.

It would be great if I were dead.

I would not feel pain anymore if I were dead.

With that thought, I clawed at the floor and crawled bit by bit toward the knife.

Shards of glass from the IV bottle pierced my palms and knees, which left a trail of blood behind me, but I did not even feel it.

Finally, I grabbed the knife.

Without hesitation, I slashed it across my wrist.

Among the old crisscrossing scars on my wrist, a fresh red gash instantly bloomed.

For some reason, I suddenly thought of Yelena.

The wounds on her body were actually no fewer than mine.

Maybe it really was the Smith family genes at work. I had also never been the obedient and gentle type.

At eighteen, I was just about to start college, but I ended up in that alley.

I broke down, screamed, smashed everything I could reach, and turned the blade on myself again and again.

Yelena would snatch the knife away and stab herself instead.

Blood would spurt out, but she seemed to feel no pain. She would just use her clean hand to wipe my face over and over.

Back then, I did not cry, but my face would be wet from Yelena’s tears.

After that, no matter how much pain I was in, I never hurt myself again.

I was afraid that she would worry, feel guilty, and cry. I was even more afraid that she would bleed alongside me.

However, it was all an act.

She had even hired those thugs herself.

Even her becoming a psychiatrist was just so that she could use her professional knowledge to keep me erratic and control my condition.

My strength drained away with the blood, and I slumped against the corner of the wall.

Suddenly, I was laughing and crying at the same time.

When one was about to die, I supposed one would feel a little more aggrieved than usual.

“I didn’t stick a needle in his head… I didn’t steal his stuff… I wasn’t causing trouble…”

My voice grew softer and softer until even my sobs would not come out in the end.

I collapsed weakly in a pool of blood, and my vision slowly went dark.

Right then, the door abruptly burst open.

Yelena kept backup copies of all the evidence, and it was irrefutable. All the principal offenders were eventually sentenced to death. When the police showed up, Julian scrambled out the window and tried to escape.Halfway through, he heard the door opening. He was so scared that he screamed. Then, he grabbed his bag and tried to run, but Yelena yanked him back.“I was wrong! Yelena, I know I was wrong! Please save me!”He slumped to the floor and cried at the top of his lungs. He crawled to Yelena’s feet and clutched the hems of her pants tightly.“Yelena, help me! You said you’d forgive me no matter what I did!”Yelena let out a cold laugh and kicked his hands away.“You faked your illness. You framed and killed my own brother!”She suddenly reached out to grip his neck tightly, and her eyes were filled with fury.Julian only snapped out of his daze when the police dragged him away. His pupils instantly dilated in fear.“No, you can’t take me! I’m the heir of the Smith fa

That night, Yelena did not sleep. She dipped gauze in warm water before she gently cleaned every single wound on my body on her own. They were old and new as well as overlapping and intersecting. Some were even deep enough to reveal bone. After she cleaned me up, she contacted the funeral home, chose a graveyard, and arranged for the simplest procedure. She did not inform anyone.By the time the sun rose, her eyes were fully bloodshot after she finished taking care of everything. She pushed open the door and wanted to go to Julian, the “good little brother” whom she had protected and trusted all these years. As soon as the door opened, a tearful figure threw himself into her arms.“Yelena, where did you go? I was so scared by myself…”Julian lifted his face, which was full of tears. There were a few clear swollen red finger marks on his cheeks.“When you weren’t around, Felix came and bullied me again.“He stormed into my room, grabbed my hair, and slapped me many times. He

The phone in Yelena’s pocket started to vibrate, and the buzzing snapped her out of her daze. She took out her phone and threw it aside without looking at it.However, her finger accidentally hit the answer button.A strange, rough male voice echoed through the room.“Julian, we agreed that you’d pay up after we faked the car accident and bribed the doctors to falsify the medical records. It’s been half a day. Where’s the money?“You’re not trying to stiff us, are you?“I’m telling you. We’ve got more than just the evidence for this job on our hands! We still have the videos from back when you paid us to ‘spice things up’ and mess that guy up for good!“If you dare pull any tricks, you won’t get off easy!”Yelena stared blankly at the phone screen. Only then did she realize that she had taken the wrong phone in her haste. This was Julian’s phone. The caller hung up as he cursed. When she called back again, all she received was a busy signal. She sat on the cold floor while

“Felix…” Yelena’s voice trembled. She stared at my face, as though she was searching for some sign that I was just throwing a tantrum or playing a trick on her. After a long moment, she finally snapped back to reality. She lunged forward and held her trembling fingers under my nose. There was no breath. She anxiously pressed her fingers to the side of my neck. There was no pulse.Yelena instantly fell straight to the floor as if all her strength had been drained. Her fall was so violent that she knocked over the nightstand beside her.The food scattered everywhere and left a mess on the floor. It was only at this time that she saw the shattered glass and the fruit knife under the bed. Both the glass shards and the knife were stained with dried blood.Everything had been too chaotic earlier, so no one had cleaned up.Something seemed to occur to her, and she staggered back to her feet. Her hands shook as she rolled up the sleeve on my other arm.My bone-deep wound was full

There were screams, hurried footsteps, and the pungent smell of medicine.I was soon surrounded by a swarm of white figures. My wound was roughly stitched up, and I received countless injections that were barely keeping me alive.Bits and pieces of conversation drifted into my ears.“Miss Smith is really unlucky. I heard that they got into a car accident when she was on the way home with her step brother, and his old illness flared up on the spot.”“Don’t bring it up. The doctor said they needed a bone marrow transplant to save his life. Miss Smith and the other brother are the only matches in the whole hospital.”“She passed out three times during the procedure but still refused to switch to the other brother. She said he’s weak and afraid of pain. He wouldn’t be able to take it.”“But Mr. Julian Smith’s condition seems to be getting worse…”The door opened again.Someone stumbled to my bedside and covered my eyes.Yelena’s voice was hoarse with exhaustion.“Felix, don’t be
