Chapter 6

Author: Hello Spring
Jane had never planned to pay Xena any attention. Honestly, she wasn’t worth the energy.

But earlier, Xena had been sitting right behind them at the restaurant, loudly bragging to her friend. She claimed that when Zac went to the bridal boutique with Liz, he brought her along too. Not only did he let her try on wedding dresses too, but he even pushed Liz aside for her.

That alone was enough to make Jane’s blood boil. And when she remembered how quiet Liz had been that day and the red, swollen ankle she noticed later, everything suddenly clicked.

Jane didn’t have Liz’s patience. Giving Xena just two slaps? That was Jane being polite.

Zac’s expression darkened. “This is between me and Liz. You have no right to interfere.”

As he spoke, his cold eyes landed on Liz, who had just walked up. His expression was full of contempt.

“I thought if I gave you a few days, you’d cool off. But instead, you ran off and told Jane about what happened at the boutique just to pick a fight with Xena?”

William ignored the small talk and got straight to the point. “I have a friend who’s a lawyer, experienced, and she just left her old firm today. Do you need a divorce attorney?”“We’re not exactly short on people,” the man replied, “but one more wouldn’t hurt. If you’re calling me personally, your friend must be special. Is it a man or a woman?”“A woman.”The other end perked up immediately. “Oh? Girlfriend?”William’s Adam’s apple shifted as his voice dropped lower. “No.”“Then you’re still chasing her? You’re using me to do her a favor without offering me anything in return. Isn’t that a little unfair?”Leaning back on the couch, William spoke lazily. “What do you want?”“That limited-edition Cullinan in your garage. Let me take it for a spin.”“It’s yours.”“You’re kidding me?!” The man’s voice shot up in disbelief. He had tried just to touch that car before, and William would not allow it. Now he was giving it away? This woman must really matter to him.“Pick it up tomo

When William saw the box in Liz’s arms, surprise flickered in his eyes.“You quit?”Liz nodded. “Something like that.”“Do you have plans to look for a new job?”“Not yet. I’m going to take some time off before deciding.”Until things with Zac were completely resolved, any job she tried to take would almost certainly be sabotaged by him. Warren had also suggested grad school, and that was on her mind too.Back in college, her grades in her core courses had been strong enough for guaranteed admission to a graduate program. But Zac had been launching his business at the time and needed financial support, so she had gone straight to work after graduation to help fund him.Missing out on grad school had always been a regret. Now that the chance had come around again, she was seriously weighing whether to go back to school or continue working.“I know a few managing partners at other firms,” William said. “If you want a job, I can make some introductions.”Liz looked at him. “Thank

“Ma’am, Ms. Smith is coming out.”Kimberly looked up and spotted Liz walking slowly toward her, a cardboard box in her arms. From the look of it, she had just been fired from the firm.“Useless,” Kimberly muttered under her breath. If her friends had found out that Liz had been fired, they would have laughed about it behind her back for days.Suppressing her irritation, Kimberly stepped forward and blocked Liz’s path. “You sounded so tough on the phone earlier, but look at you now—fired in no time. Other than bringing shame to the Smith family, what exactly are you good for?”Liz hadn’t expected Kimberly to wait downstairs all this time. A flicker of surprise crossed her eyes before they turned cold.“Mrs. Smith, do I need to remind you again that I’ve already cut ties with the Smith family? Even if I embarrass myself, it won’t reflect on you.”“If there’s nothing else, please step aside. You’re in my way.”Kimberly’s expression hardened. “You think blood ties disappear just be

By the time Liz finished her exit paperwork, it was close to six o’clock. She shut down her computer, said goodbye to Hunter and Naomi, and stood with a box in her arms, ready to leave the firm.Hunter hurried after her. “Liz, let me walk you down.”“No need. It’s not heavy. Just focus on your work and aim to start handling your own cases soon.”“Okay.”He hesitated, clearly wanting to say something, but the elevator arrived.Liz looked up at him. “I’ll get going then. See you.”“Liz…”Before he could finish, Jenna called out from nearby. “Mr. Sanders, Mr. Quinn wants to see you.”Just then, Liz stepped into the elevator. After pressing the button for the first floor, she smiled and waved at Hunter. “Go on. Don’t keep Mr. Quinn waiting.”As the doors closed, frustration flickered across Hunter’s face. “Of all times, Uncle Warren had to call for me now,” he thought bitterly. The courage he had worked up disappeared in an instant. Guess he would have to wait until next time.

When Hunter started to get up and head toward Warren’s office, Liz quickly grabbed his arm.“Keep your voice down. This has nothing to do with Mr. Quinn. Going to him won’t help.”“But you haven’t done anything wrong. Why should you have to quit?”“Sit down first.”Hunter hesitated for a moment, then reluctantly obeyed.“Don’t go looking for Mr. Quinn. He’s in a tough spot too. I’m leaving because my personal issues have started to affect my work. It has nothing to do with him.”“If you leave, there won’t be any lawyer here to mentor me. Just wait a bit. There has to be another way.”If all else failed, he could always swallow his pride and ask his parents for help.“The other lawyers here are just as capable. And Mr. Quinn knows plenty of attorneys. He’ll find someone to take you on soon.”“I don’t want someone else. I want you to mentor me.”Seeing his stubborn, almost pouty expression, Liz couldn’t help smiling. “Come on. This is just temporary. I’m not leaving the profess

“You!”Kimberly’s face turned an ugly shade of gray, then she let out a cold laugh. “Well, look at you. A few years running wild out there, and now you’ve learned to talk back. Absolutely no manners at all. Keeping Mandy instead of you was clearly the right choice. If I had to deal with you every day, you would have driven me to my grave by now.”Liz’s tone was icy. “If I have no manners, that is because my parents never taught me any. Giving birth without raising your child does not make you worthy of the title ‘parent.’”With that, she hung up without hesitation.Hearing the busy tone on the other end, Kimberly’s face went from pale to livid. “Call her back,” she barked. She wanted to ask how Liz could dare claim she had not been raised. When they brought her back to the Smith family, she ate and dressed no worse than Mandy. If she had not insisted on getting involved with Zac, the Smiths would never have cut ties with her. What right did she have to accuse them of abandoning he
