Chapter 1 A Toast to Betrayal

作者: Inspo Spark
"Ms. Ellwood, I really should thank you. If you hadn't taken such good care of Levi, we wouldn't be where we are today." Luna Wyllow walked up to me with a glass of champagne, smiling as if nothing in the world could trouble her.

In an instant, every gaze in the room shifted toward us—some mocking, some eager for entertainment.

I used to be the brightest jewel of the Evermont elite circle. Now, I had become its favorite joke.

I gently swirled the red wine in my glass, the crimson liquid rippling in slow circles.

"You're too kind, Ms. Wyllow." I curved my lips into a faint smile, though it never reached my eyes. "After all, not everyone gets the chance to pick up someone else's trash—and treat it like a treasure."

Luna's expression froze instantly. Clearly, she had not expected someone from a fallen family like mine to still dare talk back.

"You—"

"What about me?" I took a slow sip of wine, glancing over her face as it paled with anger. "Did I say anything wrong? A man who needed a woman to help him claw his way back up… Only someone with your taste, Ms. Wyllow, would see that as a prize."

A few suppressed laughs rippled through the crowd.

Luna's eyes reddened instantly as she turned, aggrieved, toward Levi Coleman, who had just approached. "Levi… I… I only wanted to thank Ms. Ellwood. I think she misunderstood."

Levi immediately pulled Luna behind him. His brows knitted together as he faced me.

"Stella! Don't be mean." There was a trace of impatience in his voice. "Luna just wants to greet you. Why must you be so aggressive? Apologize to her and stop making a scene."

My heart clenched sharply, pain spreading through me in waves.

Five years ago, he had told me to wait until he reclaimed everything that belonged to him, and then he would come back and marry me in glory.

I believed him.

For that one promise, I rejected every arranged match my family had set up for me.

I had even staked everything I had on him—my family's connections, the resources in my hands—building him a path straight to the top behind everyone's backs.

Five years later, he did come back. He had reclaimed everything. He had even risen as a powerful new force in the business world.

But he had also personally devoured my family's company.

And the woman standing beside him was none other than my sworn rival, Luna Wyllow.

Now, he was even defending her against me.

I looked at his handsome yet unfamiliar profile and suddenly thought that I truly was a joke.

"Levi, did I provoke her, or did she come looking for trouble?"

"Stella." His tone hardened, his eyes full of warning. "Don't be unreasonable."

"I'm being unreasonable?" I let out a soft, incredulous laugh. "Levi, are you hearing yourself? You used the first investment I gave you to rebuild everything, and the moment you succeeded, you swallowed my family's company whole. Now you're standing here with another woman, calling her the love of your life, and you're telling me I'm unreasonable?"

The murmurs around us grew louder.

Levi's expression darkened instantly, embarrassment and anger flashing across his eyes. "That's enough, Stella. Don't make a voluntary investment sound like some grand favor."

He glanced back at Luna before returning his gaze to me. "My heart is now with Luna. The way you keep clinging on like this… It's honestly beneath you."

'Beneath me?'

"Fine. I won't meddle in your great love story." I lifted my glass and drained the wine in one go. "Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness."

Without another word, I turned and walked toward the garden outside the banquet hall.

When news of Levi's imprisonment reached me, I was in Ian's study.Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, warm and gentle. The housekeeper placed a newspaper in front of me. On the front page was a photo of Levi in prison uniform, being escorted into court. I only glanced at it once before pushing the paper aside. "You don't need to bring me this kind of news anymore.""Yes, ma'am." The housekeeper bowed slightly and withdrew."Still thinking about him?" Ian's voice came from behind me as he wrapped his arms around me."No." I shook my head. "I was just wondering… if five years ago I hadn't chosen to wait for him, and instead accepted the arranged marriage my family proposed, would things have turned out differently?""No," he said without skipping a beat, then turned me around to face him, his gaze steady. "Stella, you were meant to stand at the top. No matter which path you chose, you would have ended up shining, while I…"He lowered his head and pressed a gen

The moment Levi spat out that threat, the villa doors were shoved open from outside, and Ian walked in with two bodyguards. The instant he saw that I was unharmed, the tension in his expression eased. But when Levi recognized him, the madness on his face froze. In its place came sheer disbelief. "How are you here? No, that's impossible… This can't be happening!"A faint sense of dread crept into my chest at his reaction.Ian approached him leisurely. "Why not? Because according to your plan, I shouldn't be here? Or more accurately, I should be a dead man? Unfortunately for you, the people you sent to block me on the highway weren't very professional. In fact, they're probably busy explaining to the police right now why they showed up to greet me with weapons."At those words, the last of Levi's composure shattered. With a hoarse roar, he lunged at Ian. "Haverford, I'll kill you!"But Ian simply remained still. His two bodyguards stepped forward in perfect sync, pinning Levi to the

In the days that followed, preparations for my wedding with Ian proceeded smoothly and in perfect order. And with his help, Ellwood Global made it through its most dangerous period and gradually returned to stability. Our partnership grew more seamless by the day. We attended meetings together, met clients together, and stayed up late working through projects side by side. The more time I spent with him, the more I began to see just how remarkable he was.He respected every decision I made and listened attentively to every idea I had. He remembered my preferences. He knew I did not eat parsley. He knew I preferred warm water. When I was tired, he would quietly drape a coat over my shoulders. This feeling of being valued and respected was something I had never once experienced with Levi. And Ian's actions made me wonder. Would anyone really treat a mere business partner like this?"Why are you so good to me?" I looked at him and finally asked what had been on my mind.He stepped be

After I hung up on him, Levi was so furious he nearly tore his office apart. He had probably never suffered a humiliation like this in his life. A woman he believed he had completely under control had slipped through his fingers in an instant. Worse, she had landed beside his greatest enemy and slapped him hard across the face while doing it.There was no way he could swallow that insult. So that very afternoon, he made his move. He began targeting Ellwood Global's suppliers—the ones he had not yet fully absorbed—cutting them off and applying pressure. It was his way of warning me. His way of telling me that without him, I was nothing.…When I received calls for help from several long-time suppliers, I was sitting in a meeting with Ian's team.Inside the conference room, Haverford Corporation's top business minds were analyzing the core documents I had brought with me."Ms. Ellwood, Coleman has started making moves," my assistant whispered at my side, her voice laced with co

Levi had probably assumed that I would come back obediently and apologize to him. He had even been in a good enough mood to buy Luna the latest Hermes bag, as compensation for the fright she had suffered the night before. But at that very moment, a bombshell exploded across Evermont's entire business circle.'Haverford Corporation CEO Ian Haverford Marries Stella Ellwood, Former Heiress of Ellwood Global—Marriage Registered Today, Century Wedding to Be Held This Saturday at 7 P.M.'Beneath the announcement was a photograph. In it, Ian and I stood side by side. He wore a perfectly tailored bespoke suit, his posture straight and imposing. But he was not looking at the camera. Instead, his head was slightly tilted, his gaze fixed intently on me.The moment the news broke, the entire internet erupted.Levi's call came almost immediately. I looked at the flashing name on my screen, answered it, and casually put him on speaker."Stella, what the hell are you doing?" His furious roar bu

There was a brief pause on the other end of the line, as if Ian had been momentarily caught off guard. Then came a low chuckle, light as a feather, brushing against my heart with a trace of amusement."Of course." His voice carried through the line, steady and unhurried. "But Ms. Ellwood, I don't like engagements. They drag on too long."My heart sank. "So…""So, we meet tomorrow morning at ten, at the vital records office entrance. We get married first. Then, we'll hold the grandest wedding this city has ever seen. Everyone will know that you, Stella Ellwood, are now my wife."His words left me stunned into silence."What? Afraid?" he said lightly, as if he had already sensed my hesitation. "Ms. Ellwood, the best way to deal with a starving wolf isn't to hide. It's to stand beside a stronger beast. Since you made this call, you should be ready to go all in."His words reignited something that had long gone cold inside me.He was right. I could not afford to be weak anymore."
