Chapter 2

Penulis: Pantaloon
Since I'd already decided not to chase after Zac anymore, I returned to my apartment.

I started packing up and prepared to move back in with my parents. Three years ago, just because of an offhand comment Zac made, I had moved out and started living alone.

I had lived by myself for three years, and once they were up, I managed to track Zac down and ask if he still meant what he had said before.

"Zac, I've lived independently for three years, just like you asked. I've proven I can take care of myself and take care of you too. Do you still mean what you said three years ago?"

Zac didn't seem to remember what he had said. He had even asked me blankly, "What did I say three years ago?"

His question had left me speechless.

Still clinging to one last shred of hope, I had reminded him, "You said if I could live by myself for three years, you'd consider dating me."

At that, Zac finally seemed to remember. He just let out a lazy chuckle and waved his hand dismissively.

"There's nothing to consider. I'm saying no."

I had sighed internally. I had expected this answer, but it still hurt to hear it out loud.

I had quietly walked out of the room. Behind me, Zac hadn't bothered hiding his cruel sarcasm.

"A throwaway line from three years ago, and you actually took it seriously, Nancy. I can't even remember saying it, and you had the guts to ask me about it. What a joke."

The apartment wasn't big. It only took me half a day to pack everything.

Beside my suitcase was a black bag filled with jewelry and stuffed animals. They were gifts from Zac over the years.

I didn't want any of it anymore.

The doorbell rang, and a voice came through the intercom, "Hello, is Miss Sullivan home?"

I opened the door and handed the black bag to the man outside. He was the secondhand buyer I'd called earlier.

Back when we were younger, Zac had always gifted me luxury items worth a fortune. Since I no longer wanted them, I figured I might as well sell them.

Just then my best friend, Megan Powell, showed up.

She looked horrified when she saw what I was doing. Her eyes went wide in disbelief.

"These were your absolute favorites! Are you seriously selling them? Nancy, have you lost your mind?"

I turned around calmly, holding up my phone to show her the deposit notification. Over a million bucks had just hit my account.

"There's no point keeping them. This money is way more useful."

"But those were Zac's birthday gifts to you every single year. You've kept them for over twenty years! If Zac finds out you sold them–"

I suddenly hated hearing Zac's name. I grabbed Megan's hand, cut her off, and dragged her out the door with me.

"Enough. What's done is done. Don't bring him up again. He won't find out unless you plan to snitch and cozy up to that guy."

She reached up to feel my forehead, her jaw dropping like she couldn't believe what she was seeing.

"Holy crap. Did someone finally cure your love-crazed brain? Wait. Does this mean you've actually let Zac go?"

I gave her a bitter smile.

So what if I had? It was better to let go than keep hurting myself.

"Yeah. I've let go. Starting today, I'm a brand new Nancy. I've already agreed to meet someone my parents set me up with."

That left her completely stunned. Her jaw dropped. She couldn't even say a word.

"Come on," I said with a smile. "I just made some easy money today. Let me treat you to a fancy dinner."

I was completely out of it when Steven took me home. I had never imagined there had been someone in love with me for so many years."I never intended to tell you any of this," he said. "But I didn't expect you to find out."Forget the past. All I want is for you to fall in love with the version of me standing in front of you now, not out of guilt, and not because you feel like you owe me."I didn't even know how to describe how I felt at that moment. It was something Zac had never made me feel.Growing up in an environment full of power plays and transactions, every favor was returned with a contract. There was never any love like Steven's—unconditional and expecting nothing in return.I tossed and turned all night, not falling asleep until three in the morning. The next day, I slept straight through to the evening, only to be jolted awake by a string of phone calls. It was Megan inviting me to a party. It wasn't until I arrived that I realized it was more of a setup to patch th

After that, Cayden Trundell really did come from Parienna. When he arrived, Steven and Zac were both busy all day accompanying and entertaining Cayden.I was the only one left with nothing to do, so I figured I might as well visit our old lecturer, Sean Dunkirk, at the college. After all, Steven and I's previous plan to visit together had been delayed. This time, I wanted to make it up."Nancy, it's been ages since you last came to see me," Sean greeted me.I felt a little guilty. It really had been a long time.I'd spent the past three years so focused on Zac that I'd neglected a lot of people around me."I'm sorry, Professor Dunkirk. That's on me. I promise I'll visit more often from now on."He laughed heartily. "There's no need to visit that often. I have a feeling you'll be coming to bother me for something sooner or later anyway."I looked at him in confusion, but he changed the subject."I heard you've been spending a lot of time with Steven lately. Did something good

In the days that followed, Zac kept reaching out to me from time to time.Eventually, I lost my patience and blocked him. It felt a lot like the way he used to treat me.One day, Steven and I had plans to visit one of our old lecturers at the college. Just as I got into Steven's car, my phone rang.It was my father."Nancy, do you have a minute? There's an issue with the contract you signed with the Jesselton family's company. I need you to come in and deal with it."I frowned, not wanting to get involved."Dad, if it's work-related, just handle it yourself.""It's Zac. He insisted on you doing it. He said you were the one who signed the deal, so it has to be you."I sighed and hung up. I then turned to Steven with an apologetic look."Sorry, Steven. Something's come up at work. I need to head to the office. Looks like we'll have to postpone visiting our lecturer.""It's fine," Steven said with a smile. "We can go see him any time. I'm free now anyway, I'll go with you."-

I went on four dates in just one day.By the time I got home, I felt more exhausted than if I'd worked a full shift. I was mentally and physically drained. As soon as mom saw me, she came rushing over. Concern was written all over her face."So? Nancy, out of the four guys today, was there at least one you liked? If not, I've still got more lined up."I quickly cut her off. "They were all fine today. There's no need to add more."She gave a thoughtful nod.Without waiting for her to say anything else, I ran upstairs and collapsed onto my bed.I hadn't even been lying down for long when my phone rang.I had two numbers, one for work and one personal. Hardly anyone had my personal number. Thinking it might be important, I picked up.Zac's voice came through the line, "Nancy, I wanted to talk to you about some work stuff. Maybe over dinner tonight?""Sorry, I'm busy. And if it's about work, call the work number. It's after hours. I don't discuss work in my personal time."There

I had been so absorbed in my thoughts I didn't realise he hadn't left."Zac, why are you still here?"That one question seemed to hit him hard. He reflexively stepped back and bumped into the wall behind him.I didn't mean to sound cold. But for the past three years, Zac had rarely shown up around me of his own accord, much less stayed in the same room for more than a minute.Whenever he got the chance, he'd leave without hesitation. He'd put as much distance between us as possible."Nancy, what's that supposed to mean? Are you saying you don't even want to see me now?" he demanded.I looked up at him, feeling confused, and met his gaze.Wasn't this exactly what he wanted? Why did he look so angry?Still, I stayed calm and explained, "I'm in the middle of a date. Zac, please don't interrupt. I don't want to leave a bad impression."He stared at me in disbelief. He seemed visibly shaken. "You're talking to me like this? You're actually going on dates behind my back?"I forced

As soon as I stepped back into my parents' house, mom threw her arms around me. She hugged me tightly, eyes already brimming with tears.I hadn't been home much in the past three years.Every time I came back, I worried my parents would pressure me again about dating, marriage, and settling down. But this time, I brought it up myself."Mom, that blind date you mentioned the other day, is it all set? I'm free to go tomorrow."Mom beamed and said everything was arranged. She even pulled out her phone and showed me a photo album."Nancy, take a look. See if there's anyone you like."I couldn't help but laugh. I picked two at random."Take your time setting them up," I said. "I'm serious about getting married this time."-The next morning, I went to the spot mom had arranged. It was a tea house. I'd never liked coffee, but tea? I've always had a soft spot for it.There was something about the process of brewing it that made me feel completely relaxed."After all these years, y
