Chapter 4

Author: Explosive King
The financial crimes unit worked with remarkable efficiency. As they reviewed the forged signature, the fraudulent guarantee agreement, and the clear bank transaction records spread across the desk, their expressions darkened.

"He forged an official company seal and used someone else's identity to take out 300 thousand dollars in online loans! Paired with home invasion and extortion, the nature of these crimes is egregiously severe!"

The officer slammed his stamp onto the case file and issued an order on the spot, "Bring the suspect in right now!"

The moment I received the case acceptance receipt, my phone began vibrating nonstop. My oh-so-loving family was busy showering each other with money and showing off in the family group chat.

Bonnie sent more than a dozen videos in rapid succession, flooding the screen with blinding flashes of red.

Elio stood in front of a brand-new BMW in the videos, a large red celebratory rosette pinned to his chest, his face beaming with pride. Mom was dressed in a brand-new gown, grinning from ear to ear.

The document she was holding was the exact agreement they'd forced me to sign the night before, surrendering my rights to the property.

"This is all thanks to Elio! This car cost more than 500 thousand dollars out the door!"

Uncle Axel instantly accepted the transfer and piled on the praise. "Elio's really made something of himself. Your mom's finally getting to enjoy the good life! Unlike a certain ungrateful wretch who only knows how to scheme against her own family."

Aunt Anna sent a voice message as well, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "That bitch, Irene, is nothing but a jinx and a parasite. Sons are the only ones you can count on! Bonnie's the real MVP for carrying this baby!"

Elio's ego inflated to the absolute limit. He sent a voice message into the group, his tone unbearably arrogant, almost as if he was doing everyone a favor.

"I'll treat everyone to dinner at the seafood restaurant tonight, Uncle Axel and Aunt Anna! I'm booking the whole place, so order whatever you want! Next month, I'll cash out Irene's 100 thousand dollars provident fund.

"Then, I'll marry her off to some rich old man so we can get at least another 300 thousand dollars from them. When that happens, I'll book Bonnie the best postpartum care center in the city!

"Irene's an old hag anyway. There's no point in leaving all that money with her. It's going to end up in our family's hands eventually!"

I stared at the screen, a chilling smile curling at the corners of my lips. Elio wanted to take my provident fund and marry me off for money? The only thing he was going to be doing was spending his days behind bars.

Bonnie immediately posted a carousel of nine photos on her social media. "My hubby bought me this BMW outright, and my mother-in-law has my back. A certain unwanted old hag is only fit to rot in some crappy rental for the rest of her life!"

Even while everyone was celebrating, Mom still didn't forget to take a jab at me. She tagged me in the family group chat and sent a 60-second voice message.

I played it.

Her voice was shrill and grating as she cursed, "See that, Irene? This is what your brother is capable of! If you know what's good for you, wire your salary to your brother as soon as you get paid next month!

"If you dare bring up that 700 thousand dollars again, I'll go to your company and hold up a banner, telling everyone that you abused your own mother and drove a pregnant woman to her grave!"

The suffocating despair I had felt in my previous life as I lay on a hospital bed and waited for death to claim me came rushing back. I swallowed the metallic tang of blood in my throat, my eyes completely drained of warmth.

With one hand, I replied in the family group chat, "Nice car. Too bad you won't get to drive it. Eat up all the seafood you can tonight. After all, prison food isn't half as grand."

The instant the message was sent, the group chat exploded. In less than three seconds, Mom video-called me.

I answered it coldly.

The private dining room was awash in neon lights and liquor on the screen, with king crab and lobster piled high on the table.

Mom's eyes were narrowed into slits, and her face trembled violently with rage. Glaring viciously into the lens, she cussed at me, spittle flying from her mouth, "Who do you think you're jinxing, you bitch? You damn jinx—"

However, the very next second, a piercing police siren suddenly blared in the background. Then came a deafening crash.

Four fully armed police officers barged into the private dining room, their faces stern and their presence menacing. The instant the cops broke into the room, the image in the video shook violently.

Time flew by, and two years passed in the blink of an eye. Without those bloodsuckers weighing me down, my life had changed dramatically in those two years. Thanks to my outstanding performance and decisive leadership, I had risen through the ranks and was now the company's regional director. I had bought myself a car worth more than 300 thousand dollars, and I was living an elegant and free life. Meanwhile, life for the Campbells had gone from bad to worse. Elio had worked himself to the bone in prison in hopes of receiving a reduced sentence. He behaved well and was rewarded with a six-month reduction. However, with an eleven-year sentence, it was still a distant dream for him to get out of prison. Bonnie remarried soon after her divorce. Her new husband was a divorced man who ran a wholesale seafood business. She had no intention of bringing her son into her new marriage, so she dumped the Campbell family's only heir on her parents and washed her hands of him. Mom, on th

Three months later, the civil court's final ruling was officially handed down. The house I had spent ten years paying off—the one Mom had secretly transferred into Elio's name—was put up for court-ordered foreclosure. After paying off the remaining mortgage, the proceeds from the auction netted 860 thousand dollars. Based on the contribution ratios determined by the court, my share came out to 620 thousand dollars. Mom, on the other hand, was left with a measly 240 thousand dollars. Because she was currently on probation and her movements were restricted, and Elio was still serving his prison sentence, she had no choice but to humiliatingly grant me full power of attorney to handle the final signatures and paperwork for the sale of the house. Mom sat in a wheelchair in the signing hall of the housing authority. Her hair was completely white, and her plump face had sunken. She looked like the walking dead. Her hand trembled violently as she gripped the pen, her eyes glued to th

Three months later, as the biting winds of early winter swept in with freezing rain, the criminal case finally went to trial in the district court. As the victim, I sat in the front row of the gallery. The moment the bailiffs brought Elio and Mom into the courtroom, I could barely recognize them. Mom was gaunt beyond recognition. Her hair, which had previously been dyed jet black and styled in glossy curls, was now more than half gray. Elio, on the other hand, looked like a walking skeleton, his eyes vacant. The judge struck the gavel, and the trial officially began. The prosecutor opened by reading the indictment, laying out each of Elio's charges—forging a company seal, defrauding the victim of 300 thousand dollars, breaking into the victim's house and committing robbery, and extortion. The moment the judge asked the defendant whether she disputed the allegations, Mom suddenly dropped to her knees in the dock as if she'd lost her mind. Her voice was hoarse as she wailed at th

A month later, the criminal case officially entered the public prosecution stage. Uncle Axel was the first unlucky scoundrel to face the music. That morning, he was standing under the old oak tree at the village entrance, bragging to anyone who would listen about the new house his son had just bought. The postal courier rode up on a motorcycle and handed him a court summons in front of the entire village. I had sued him to recover the full 80 thousand dollar loan, plus interest, and had also applied for a court-ordered asset freeze. The court immediately froze the bank accounts and pension account in his name.Uncle Axel's blood pressure shot through the roof. He nearly suffered a stroke on the spot. Not long after, Aunt Anna also received a court summons. I had my lawyer calculate the original 20 thousand dollar debt along with the accrued interest over the past year down to the last cent. I wouldn't let a single cent slide. That sent the dead family group chat into another fren

The officer in charge mercilessly cut Mom off, "The legal system doesn't bend to your whims, Nora. Do you think you can just take the fall because you want to? "The surveillance footage clearly shows that your son was the one who assaulted Irene, forged her signature, and masterminded the loan fraud! You're an accomplice and an accessory at best. No one can save him now!"After Mom heard that, her eyes rolled back, and she fainted in her chair.…Bonnie's comeuppance arrived even faster. After being kicked out of the hospital once the tests confirmed she was fine, she was so terrified that she packed her bags that very night and fled back to her parents' home.Yet, the moment she stepped through the door, her mother, who had learned that Elio had been arrested for fraud and robbery and was facing ten years in prison, immediately turned on Bonnie. "I told you the Campbells were unreliable, but you insisted on marrying into it, you jinx! Look at you now, married to a convict. Do

The financial crimes unit moved with far more speed and force than Elio had ever imagined. The following afternoon, I was called in as the victim to give my statement. Elio sat in the interrogation chair, his hands cuffed behind him. He held his chin stubbornly high as he brazenly defended himself. "Officer, you've got the wrong guy! That 300 thousand dollar online loan was taken out with Irene's consent! It's a personal loan between siblings. How the hell is that fraud? "Also, that whole home-invasion robbery thing is a joke! She signed that agreement willingly!" The more he talked, the more convinced he became that he was in the right. He even slammed his fist against the table. "That surveillance footage was definitely edited by her! She's just trying to frame me!"Detective Eden Lane, who was in charge of the interrogation, sneered and pulled out a thick stack of documents from the case file, tossing them onto the table in front of Elio. "Oh? Elio Campbell, you're still
