Chapter 4

Lay Mann
After a torrent of complaints, even Victoria had to remove Hugo from clinical duties and assign him to clerical work.

Hugo responded by crying again. He sobbed and protested, "I know everyone looks down on me because of how clumsy I am, Madam Director, but I sincerely want to improve. It has always been my dream to become a great medical professional."

His social media told a different story.

[Call me the Medical Fiend for being such a clumsy silly-billy! I'm clearly not cut out for this whole adulting and working thing, but I've got the director herself protecting and encouraging me. She said she wants to protect my beautiful innocence, whatever the cost! Ngaww. Thank you! You're the sweetest and the prettiest!]

One day, the cardiology department received an important patient. It was one of our longest-standing board members, Oswell Blackadder. Despite his advanced age, his condition had been stable for years. He was only here for a routine checkup.

Victoria assigned Hugo to his medical team so he could learn on the job, at least in theory.

That afternoon, the shrill tone of a flatline and Hugo's scream rang out from Oswell's room.

I had been sitting with my mother in the ward next door, so I rushed in at once.

"Mr. Blackadder! Are you okay?" I called as I stepped inside.

His face had turned deathly pale. His heart had stopped. Hugo sat on the floor nearby, screaming uncontrollably.

I moved in immediately and began CPR. At the same time, I demanded, "What happened? Mr. Blackadder's condition was stable. He was supposed to be fine."

Hugo only cried harder. A nurse, just as shaken, forced herself to speak. "H-He said that Madam Director ordered him to i-inject some vitamin into his vein to help his heart… B-But then t-this happened…"

I quickly examined the drug. It was a highly concentrated potassium salt. Hugo had injected it directly into a hypokalemic patient without diluting it.

"Who the hell allowed this?" I roared. "This drug belongs in a different cabinet!"

"B-But Madam Director told me he needed potassium salt for his condition. This is it, isn't it?" he protested weakly.

My blood boiled. "That does not mean injecting concentrated potassium straight into someone's vein, you idiot. Lives are at stake in this job, Hugo. Does that ever cross your mind?"

My attempt to save him failed. Oswell died.

His son, the city's real estate mogul, arrived at the hospital as soon as he heard the news. The cause of his father's death was as devastating as it was unacceptable.

In his grief and rage, he grabbed Victoria by the collar and shouted, "Explain this. Explain it to me right now. He came in for a routine check. How did someone like him just… die like that?"

Victoria's first move was to pull a sobbing, nearly collapsing Hugo into her arms. Then she shot me a sharp glare.

"It was Dr. Benfort. He gave the lethal instruction without verifying the drug or its concentration. He is responsible for this tragedy," she declared. "Mark my words. We will investigate this thoroughly and punish him for malpractice. You and your family deserve nothing less."

Hugo knew exactly what to say to protect himself. As expected, he seized on Victoria's claim. "It's… It's true… Dr. Benfort told me to get this drug… He said this was the one… I shouldn't have trusted him just because he was my supervisor… And now this happened. It's all my fault…"

Marcus Blackadder glared at me. "You? You're supposed to be the expert, yet you killed my father. You're going to rot in jail for this. Do you hear me?"

He called the police. They arrived quickly. I stood there, on the verge of being taken away.

I knew I should have felt anger. Instead, I found myself looking at Hugo and Victoria with pity.

"Oh, that's the truth, huh? You and that bitch are going down!"The woman raised the broom and swung at them with all her strength, striking wildly without regard for where the blows landed. In the chaos, she jabbed straight into Victoria's waist. The impact forced a pained whimper from her, and she doubled over, clutching herself.Hugo screamed. The woman did not stop. She continued to rain blows on him, driven as if by years of pent-up resentment. "You cheated on me! You think I'm just going to let you get away with that, you little bitch?!"Everything happened in an instant. The crowd shouted and scattered.I forced myself out of my shock, pulled out my phone, and called the police and an ambulance.Supermarket security rushed in to subdue the woman. It took several men to pin her to the ground.I stepped forward and assessed Hugo and Victoria.Victoria's abdomen bled heavily, and she was losing consciousness. By contrast, Hugo remained fully alert. He had sustained multipl

With that, I turned away from her and entered the apartment, swiping my keycard.Victoria might have worn a look of regret or shame. It was impossible to tell, and it was no longer my concern. I simply did not care."The world is full of couples like us, isn't it? People who can face adversity together yet cannot stay together when everything should be in their favor," I muttered.…The next time I ran into Hugo by chance, it was an ordinary weekend afternoon. I was buying groceries for the week when I spotted that incompetent bum across the aisle. He looked far more gaunt than before. He no longer seemed to care about grooming himself into a polished image, and his clothes were plain. He looked tired and embittered, like a man worn down by life who had come to resent the world. He was arguing in a low voice with a woman in a skintight dress over the price of vegetables. Something about her felt overtly worldly. When he looked up, his eyes locked onto mine.He froze. Then his e

He paused, then added, "I heard that after she left her position, she started acting more and more like a stereotypical unemployed bum. She spends her days drinking now."Then she somehow heard about how well you've been doing and began telling everyone how close the two of you were back then. She says you'll definitely come back to her one day."I smirked and said nothing. Now that was a joke.…A few days later, on my way back to my apartment, I found Victoria lingering near the lobby. She looked frailer and more worn than before. The proud, self-assured aura she once projected had vanished. Even her clothes looked dowdy. She held a grocery bag.Her eyes brightened when she saw me."Albert!" she called, hurrying over with feigned warmth. "I've come to visit your mother. I heard she's been recovering well. How is she? I brought some fruit."I stepped away and did not reach for the bag. "Are we friends, Miss Gideon? You shouldn't have."She froze mid-motion, a flicker of embarr

Hugo grabbed Victoria and burst into hysterical sobs. "You told me you'd love me forever! You said you'd protect me no matter what happened! But you're not doing any of that now. You're cutting me off. How could you? Why?"Disgust filled Victoria's eyes. She slapped his hands away. "Get off me, you madman! How did I even fall for someone like you? I must have been blind.""That makes two of us. You used me, and now you're trying to use me one last time to get yourself out of jail. You piece of shit," Hugo shot back. The crowd watched in pained silence as the two launched into a loud, grating public spat. They shouted over each other, screeching as though the world were their stage, laying bare each other's schemes and selfish motives.Marcus' expression darkened. At last, one of the officers snapped, "Break them up. Now!"Several officers stepped in and pulled them apart, then cuffed them both. "Victoria Gideon, Hugo Spencer, you are both detained on suspicion of involvement in a

My mother turned to face Victoria."Do you still remember what you said when you and Albert got married?" she asked, her voice heavy with disappointment.Victoria froze. She looked away, her eyes avoiding my mother's gaze.My mother was not the type to let that pass."You said you would always be his first line of defense… and his last, his eternal sanctuary," she continued. "But you're cheating with this… This…"She trailed off. She could not find the right word for Hugo, so she gave up. "It's bad enough that you cheated, but you're working with him to hurt the man you swore to defend and care for. You're lying to protect this… jerk, even if it sends Albert to jail on a murder charge."A lump formed in my throat. Victoria might have changed her heart and forgotten her vows, but my mother had not. She still remembered what my ex-wife had promised me.Victoria said nothing. She looked away, her face pale with guilt. She avoided my gaze.Hugo, however, did not back down. "How dar

"You swear that I was the one who instructed you to prescribe that drug to Mr. Blackadder?" I asked Hugo carefully. He nodded firmly and replied loudly, "I swear it on my medical credentials. I did not lie about this at all. You told me to do it. You approved it when I asked for confirmation."I sighed. "Oh God. Swearing on your nonexistent medical credentials cannot be good.""How dare you?!" Victoria snapped. "What is that supposed to mean? You are trying to turn an intern into your fall guy? That is low. How could any medical professional be this low?"Hugo cried harder. "I knew it! You have it out for me. You always have. You are jealous of my relationship with your ex-wife, so you set me up. When are you finally going to let us go? And how could you just kill someone over a personal vendetta against me? Where is your heart?"I nodded. "I agree. No one who practices medicine should ever forget how much power they wield over other people's lives. Our work demands that we respec
