Chapter 4

Author: Knit Knot
"Before, you were upset that Wendy never allowed you to touch her. Now that you've played the hero, was Wendy so moved that she cried?

"I guarantee that after today, Wendy won't refuse your advances anymore."

Even after reading the texts, my expression remained calm.

"Wen…" Lucaro's voice sounded in my ear.

I didn't look up, but I heard him let out a sigh.

A moment later, I set the phone back where it was, pretending nothing had happened.

The next morning, I woke to find Carlo gone. Only his trusted man, Enzo Lombardi, was waiting for me.

When he saw me, he explained, "Don Altieri has matters to attend to today, so he asked me to take you directly to the church."

I lightly replied, "Okay."

Enzo probably thought I was upset because Carlo wasn't with me, so he quickly added, "Don Altieri cares about you very much. He knew you were going there, so he specifically contacted the church to receive only you today."

I nodded in acknowledgement. Years ago, this church caught fire by accident. The Altieri famiglia donated money for its renovations, so naturally the priests there would show Carlo some courtesy.

"Let's go and not waste any time," I said.

Enzo hurried off to get the car.

I waited for a while, but when I still saw no sign of Enzo, I started walking toward where the car was parked.

There, I saw him instructing others. "Whatever you do, don't let it slip today that Don Altieri went shopping with Ms. Amy, understand?"

I stopped in my tracks and smiled wryly.

I really didn't mind Carlo fooling around outside. After all, the nature of my relationship with him was clear to both of us—I was just the decoy he put up to appease the famiglia.

I only complied with everything just so Lucaro could truly let me go and ascend to heaven smoothly.

But even such a performance had its limits. I couldn't truly sleep with Carlo, especially in front of Lucaro. Even sharing a bed was unacceptable to me.

Fortunately, Carlo didn't like forcing people to do things. He said he was willing to wait until I truly accepted him.

The car stopped at the church entrance, and I walked in alone. Despite the bright sunshine, it started raining the moment I stepped inside.

I saw Lucaro standing outside, unable to enter. The priest had explained before that spirits couldn't enter holy places like churches.

That was also why I could pray inside with peace of mind.

Inside the church, the priest, Piero Volta, had been waiting for me. He smiled when he saw me. "God has heard your prayers. Each candle you light brings your wish one step closer."

Father Piero and I had known each other for years. He was the first to extend a helping hand after Lucaro's incident.

After all these years, I really would never be able to repay all the kindness I had received. All I could say was, "Thank you, Father Piero."

He handed me a candle. Just as I was about to take it, I heard him say, "Ms. Santoro, it's not too late to change your mind. I believe that Mr. Ricci wouldn't want to see you do this if he knew."

I smiled, took the candle, and lit it. "Father Piero, after all these years of effort, I'm only one step away. As long as I willingly sacrifice myself when Lucaro gives up on me, he'll be able to enter heaven.

"For him, I will never regret it."

The morning light traced his silhouette, just like old times. When he noticed me, he softly remarked, "You're awake? Breakfast will be ready soon."I reached out and hugged him, almost greedily inhaling the scent on him. Lucaro felt as if he had been gripped by an invisible force, and he almost stumbled forward."Mr. Ricci, may I help you with something?" came a calm voice from the side.Lucaro turned to see Father Piero standing there."Father." Lucaro's voice trembled imperceptibly. "May I ask… who placed this memorial candle?"Father Piero gazed at the warm candlelight, his expression full of pity as he said, "A young woman lit them for her late husband. It's a very tragic story."Late husband? Suddenly, Lucaro felt his heart sink.Had I come to the church for his sake?He stepped forward urgently, asking, "Father, can you tell me more?"Father Piero studied him for a moment, then slowly explained, "That young woman's husband passed because of her, and that his deep feelings for her kept his spirit here on Earth. So, she came here seeking guidance."In my view, the departed still had unresolved attachments. He likely needed to witness his loved one finding happiness and peace before he coul

I looked at the anguish in Carlo's eyes, and a pang rose in my chest. But that only lasted for a moment."Carlo, no matter what you do, I won't love you." My voice was soft but clear. "I hope you can be your true self and live a good life."I gently pried his hand open. "Thank you for liking me."Blood dripped from his unbandaged knuckles. His eyes suddenly reddened, and a tear slid down his cheek."Just why…" His voice was extremely raspy. "I've cut ties with all the other women, and I've dealt with Mia. From now on, there will only be you. Wendy, in those three years... was there really not a single moment when you loved me?"I was stunned. This was the first time I had seen Carlo cry.I wanted to say more to console him, but the crisp sound of glass breaking came from the room behind me.Lucaro was awake!I turned and rushed into the room. "Caro!"He was half-leaning against the headboard as he stared at the glass shards on the floor. His fingers hovered midair, trembling s

The muffled sound of a bullet penetrating flesh was terrifyingly soft, yet it felt heavy enough to make my heart stop.Lucaro shuddered slightly. He looked down at the dark stain rapidly spreading across his chest, then lifted his gaze to me. His lips moved as if to speak, but only a stifled groan escaped as he slowly collapsed."Caro!"My scream tore through the dead silence of the forest as Lucaro's body fell heavily. His blood spread rapidly under the dim light, thick and stifling.I fell to my knees beside him, my hands shaking as I cupped his face. The memory of Lucaro being shot three years ago came back to me.His fingers twitched. He exerted effort to lift his hand and lightly touch my cheek, wiping away my tears. His pale lips curved into an extremely faint smile."Why…" I choked out, my tears dropping into his palm. "Don't you love Sofia? Then why would you…"His lips parted slightly, as if he wanted to speak, but only a faint, indistinct sound came out. Those eyes tha

"How bold of you! You dare touch my person?" Carlo's icy voice rang out from the dazzling glow of the headlights.Armo spat and drew his gun sharply. "Mind your own business!"Before the gun muzzle could be fully raised, Carlo had struck like a phantom, seizing Armo's wrist and twisting it inward. The sound of his bones cracking pierced through his screams. The pistol flew from his hand, and in the next moment, Armo was sent flying into a tree by a kick. He slumped to the ground.Carlo crossed to the car in a few strides and yanked the door open. His eyes swept over me urgently, confirming that I was still conscious. He pulled me out and wrapped me tightly in his arms. His arms were trembling slightly."Wendy, are you an idiot? How could you get abducted from your own home?" He spoke in a low voice, and his reproach was laced with lingering fear.My throat tightened up, and the words I wanted to say got stuck. Nearby, more footsteps and loud voices sounded."Where are the peop

As my consciousness gradually returned, I felt a violent jolt shake me.I strained to open my eyes before finding myself in the back seat of a speeding car. My hands and feet were tightly bound with rough rope, and there was a cloth gag stuffed in my mouth. Two men sat in the front. The driver, a short-haired man, was focused on the road. His passenger, a man with a scar on his face, was playing with a gun."The boss only said to grab her, not what to do with her," the scarred man rasped out.He glanced sideways, his gaze brazenly roaming over me. "She's definitely a looker… And before the handoff, no one will find out."The short-haired man—Loris Canali—shot me a look through the rearview mirror and said impatiently, "Don't get any ideas. She's specifically requested by the higher‑ups. If something goes wrong, we won't be able to pay for it even with our lives."The scarred man—Armo Trevisani—clicked his tongue but said nothing more.Icy fear gripped me, but I forced my panic d
