Chapter 5

Autor: Premier II
Dante and Luciano, two men who were practically identical, stood in the Crownpoint night, both so frosty that they seemed to freeze the air around them.

I couldn't see their expressions clearly, nor could I hear what they were saying. But I knew that, in this moment, they were finally facing off as their true selves.

Dante resented how possessive Luciano was of me and was afraid Luciano would completely replace him. Meanwhile, Luciano resented Dante for betraying their alliance and then strutting around, flaunting his official relationship with me.

Luciano threw the first punch. Dante staggered back, his glasses flying off his face. Without the lenses to hide behind, every emotion in his eyes was laid bare. He wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and swung back.

The two Costello heirs, who were usually so untouchable and on a pedestal, were suddenly brawling like strays in some back alley. There was no technique or restraint, just raw anger and jealousy.

I stood before the window, watching with a cold detachment.

It wasn't until the estate's bodyguards rushed over at the sound of the commotion that Dante and Luciano were finally pulled apart.

They didn't linger. Each got into his own car and sped off in opposite directions. For now, the farce was over.

The next day, the one who came to see me was Luciano. There was a clear bruise at the corner of his eye, and his lip was split. None of it diminished his good looks. If anything, it gave him a more dangerous, feral edge.

He didn't lurk in the shadows the way he used to. Instead, he walked right up and rang my doorbell.

I opened the door and feigned surprise when I saw him. "You… What are you doing here? Dante—"

"Don't mention him to me," Luciano cut me off coldly, shouldering his way inside and shutting the door behind him.

He pinned me against the door, both hands braced on either side of my head. It was a familiar pose, but this time, his eyes held more than just that usual, brooding darkness. There was a raw, undisguised hunger there, too.

His body radiated heat. Even through the thin fabric of my nightgown, it burned against my skin like a brand.

"Chiara…" he murmured, dipping his head. His hot breath fanned over my face. "What did you mean by that phone call last night?"

My heart gave a hard, sharp thump. I knew this was the most critical step. One wrong word, and everything would fall apart.

I tilted my head up to meet his blazing gaze, letting confusion and a touch of hurt flicker in my eyes. "I just… didn't want you two to fight."

Luciano let out a short, humorless laugh. His fingers clamped around my chin as he forced me to look at him. "Chiara, don't play dumb with me."

His thumb dragged roughly across my lips, the touch sharp and invasive. "That call was you begging for help. You told your 'lover' that you were afraid of me, and then you came to me and hinted that he was useless and couldn't protect you."

Every word he spoke hit dead center, like a nail hammered right into the core of my plan. My heart clenched tight. I had underestimated Luciano. He was much smarter than I'd given him credit for.

When I didn't respond, his eyes grew brighter. "You've already figured it out, haven't you?"

I didn't say anything. I just looked at him as my eyes slowly reddened and filled with tears.

That wasn't an act. That was the fear of having my plan torn open and the bone-deep dread of the terrifying clarity in the man standing before me.

My reaction pleased him. He laughed, a low, deep sound that rumbled in his chest.

"Interesting. You're really something." Luciano let go of my chin, but his fingers didn't leave. His thumb lingered, stroking my lips with a lazy, suggestive pressure.

"I wouldn't have expected anything less from the woman I've set my sights on." He leaned in, whispering into my ear, "Since you already know, how about we start a new game?"

His lips were almost pressed to my ear, his breath scorching against my skin. It sent a shiver down my spine. "Let's kick Dante out of the picture for good."

Luciano's downfall sent shockwaves through Crownpoint.Every single piece of evidence Leo helped me pass to the Global Criminal Bureau was enough to condemn Luciano for good. Illegal arms deals, hostile takeovers, offshore money laundering, plus aggravated assault and orchestrating the dock incident to frame Dante…Stacked together, the charges were enough to bury him. He would spend the rest of his life in permanent lockdown in the federal system's strictest prison, Fort Caldera Penitentiary. The Costello family was finished. One heir was insane, and the other was in prison. That once untouchable Crownpoint mafia empire collapsed overnight.…I went to see Dante once in that dungeon-like room of the psychiatric facility. His head was shaved, and he wore an oversized hospital gown. His limbs were strapped to the bed. His eyes were vacant, and he kept mumbling to himself."Chiara, don't be afraid. You've got me. Chiara, you're mine."Over and over, he repeated those lines.I wa

Luciano took full control of the Costello family. He gave me everything other women could only dream of—a mansion on Longshore Isle, the newest sports car, and more jewelry than I could ever count. He even burned that three-million-dollar contract right in front of me.All of Crownpoint knew that the newly crowned, poker-faced Don of the Costello family had a woman he kept at the center of his world. That woman was me, Chiara Bellini. But only I knew that all of this was just another, more luxurious cage. The flames in Luciano's eyes burned brighter with each passing day when he looked at me, and the possessiveness intensified. In the middle of the night, he would run his hands over my face again and again, just to make sure I was really there.Once, because I glanced at Leo for a second too long, he made sure one of Leo's family's cargo ships had an "accident" and sank out on the open sea.Compared to Dante, he knew far better how to use tenderness to weave an inescapable web.

For a split second, Dante froze. I took advantage of that to drive the dagger I'd been hiding up my sleeve straight into his abdomen without hesitation. He stared at me in disbelief. The butterfly knife slipped from his hand and hit the ground with a loud clang."You—"I didn't give him the chance to finish. I yanked the blade out, then plunged it back into the same spot. Blood burst out in a hot spray, soaking the front of my white trench coat. His eyes rolled back, and the strength drained from his body. He crumpled to the floor. Blood spread quickly beneath him, pooling out in a dark, growing stain. Everything had happened in a matter of seconds.I pulled the dagger free and walked toward Luciano. I looked into his shell-shocked eyes and smiled. "Luciano, it's our turn now."His whole body was wound tight."What do you want?" His voice came out muffled under the duct tape.I slowly traced the tip of the blade along the contour of his face. "Weren't you the one who wanted me

It was a month before I saw Dante again. He'd lost a lot of weight, and the light in his eyes had dimmed. However, he still wore a perfectly tailored suit and clung to that last bit of dignity. When he saw Luciano walk in with a group of men who had pledged loyalty to him, he didn't look surprised. There was only a kind of ashen calm on his face.Maybe he'd seen this day coming for a long time. When Luciano's attorney announced that Luciano now controlled more than 50% of the family's businesses and armed forces, the room exploded.Dante's mother, the pampered Donna who'd always lived in comfort, fainted on the spot. Dante caught her as she fell. Then, he lifted his head, his gaze cutting through the crowd and landing directly on me.There was a storm in his eyes. Hate, pain, and defiance swirled in them, along with a trace of… a kind of despair I couldn't quite understand. Then, he smiled. He looked straight at me and mouthed a few words, "We die together."I gave him a small

Luciano's movements instantly halted. He stared at me, his eyes surging with shock. "What did you say?""I said, if I get pregnant," I repeated calmly, "whose child would it be?"He fell silent. In the dead stillness, I suddenly laughed. "You two pass me around like some toy and take turns having your way with me. You feel pretty proud of yourselves, don't you?"It takes 40 weeks to carry a child to term, but it would only take me a few minutes to get rid of it. Luciano, I don't want my child to be born without a father. Even more than that, I don't want him or her to end up being the plaything of psychos like you and Dante."With that, I turned around and walked out. But Luciano yanked me back, dragging me into his arms."I'm not like him!" It was like I'd stomped on a raw nerve. Even his voice was shaking. "Chiara, don't go. Don't leave me."I lowered my gaze. His heartbeat thudded against my cheek, steady and powerful. So, even the strongest devil had a vulnerable spot, and I

I jolted. I hadn't expected Luciano to be so blunt. Was he… trying to turn me?"Why should I help you?" I finally found my voice, though it trembled a little."Because," he murmured against my ear, teeth grazing my earlobe, his voice both seductive and cruel, "you don't have a choice. I'm the only one who can tear up that three-million-dollar contract of servitude for you."He paused, a playful, dangerous note slipping into his tone. "And don't you want to see what your elegant, perfect Underboss looks like when I've got him under my heel?"His words were the devil's whisper, laced with fatal temptation.I closed my eyes and drew in a deep breath. When I opened them again, the haze was gone. My gaze was clear and steady."Fine," I heard myself say. "I'll help you."…After forming this "alliance" with Luciano, life seemed to slip back into its old routine.During the day, Dante stayed by my side as always. The bruising on his cheek had faded. He'd put his glasses back on and r
