College life

Things were back to normal between James and me in the next few weeks. We went on dates and enjoyed our time together as always. I knew I could not trust him to be all mine, and I had to accept that. Though that was the case, I could not ultimately come to terms with it. The number of women fighting for him was ever-increasing. Some of them even had the guts to threaten me to leave him. All these hurt me, but I stood my ground. My man is mine alone.

For the next three years, things were good between us, and we planned to go to the next step. But first, we agreed for me to finish college first.

James had taken his family business seriously. Things were moving smoothly, but I got a few calls from people I didn’t know. I didn’t pay much attention to the threats I got from the calls. At first, I did not tell James about them, but it became too much when someone stopped the Uber I was riding on to college one day. A young woman threatened me to leave James if I wanted to live.

I didn’t take that lightly and confronted James for the threat. He became furious and stormed out of the apartment, taking his car and driving away. I didn’t know the woman, but he seemed to have known who she was.

He came back late at night.

“Who is she?” I asked him, standing on my feet from the coach and taking his coat from him hanging at the hanger at the corner wall.

“You have nothing to worry about. She is nothing to me. You are the only one in my life.” He said to me, holding my face to his palm giving me a kiss on my forehead

“No matter what they say, don’t give up on me,” He continued looking into my eyes saying. I could sense things were more than what they seemed.

“What happened?” I could not help but ask him

“Nothing to worry about. I will sort it out. You just concentrate on your upcoming graduation.” He said, giving me a peck on my lips

“Are you sure everything is okay?”

“Yes, babe. Don’t worry. I will sort everything out. If they come to you again, don’t hesitate to tell me everything.” He said in a deep serious tone.

Over the years, I had seen his changes. He had grown to be a loyal, sensitive man that would put me first before everything. Even his friends would have to wait when it came to me.

I was growing comfortable and accustomed to his presence that when he was not around, I would miss him like crazy.

My graduation was around the corner, and I was busy preparing for it. I looked for a company to intern for, but he opposed it. He wanted me to be close to him. He offered to work at his company as an intern. It was a good idea, but it was not okay for me. The environment would not be conducive for us. I wanted somewhere I could grow and make something of my own.

Though my family was not as rich as his, we were better off. We had money that could last us for generations. At least I knew my family was low-key and didn’t want people knowing much about us. We had a big company that was doing so well. My father was a proud man, but he loved us. Nothing was more important than our happiness. I had told him about James the moment I was sure about him.

He had asked me a few had questions about him, but I could not answer. All I did was assure him that we were in love, and he loved me sincerely.

My graduation came, but James was not available. Two days before graduation, his father encountered a problem abroad, and he had to go help.

“There is something I want to tell you.”  I wanted to work on my laptop when he came to me in the dining room. In the last few months, we have started living together.

“What is it, Hun?” I asked him back, looking at his serious expression and troubled look. I stood from the chair and had him sit on it before sitting in his lab. I got accustomed to sitting on his lap. It was a norm. He loved it when I did that.

“I will not be able to accompany you to your graduation.” BOOM, and there it was. What I was afraid of.

“Why?” I calmly asked him though I was disappointed

“My dad just called me now. He has encountered a problem in Singapore. He wants me to go and help him sort it out.” He explained in detail. There was nothing I could do about it

“I know I promised to go with you, but this is very important.” He looked at my disappointed face and said to me

“It’s okay. I know you have no choice either. I will just do it on my own. I wanted to introduce you to my dad.” I said to myself in a low tone. It’s true. I wanted to take that opportunity and introduce him to my dad

“I know you are disappointed. Let me make it up to you when I come back from this trip,” he said to me, hugging me tightly, which brought my head to his neck. A tear drooped from my eyes, but I did not want him to see. I quickly excused myself and went to the restroom in my room.

The graduation ended, and I received my certificate in smiles, but somehow I was disappointed.

My dad was the happiest. My younger brother also came. He was a year behind me and was graduating the following year. I saw how eager he was to graduate as well. We booked a room in a restaurant to celebrate my graduation.

My mum was late, and we lived with just dad and my younger brother.

“Where is the young man? I thought you said he would be here. “My dad started, and the smile on my face dropped.

“He was supposed to be here, but something huge came up.” I sat straight on the chair and said to my dad. “His company encountered a problem in Singapore, and he was required to go and help out” My dad had furrowed his brows when I said something important came up. But the following statement I said eased his brows.

“So, he is a hard-working young man?” he asked, but it was more of a self-statement

“Yes, dad,” I answered him back in excitement. Each time someone said something good about James, it made my heart flutter.

“He better be a good man, as you have said. Otherwise, I will have him suffer even if his family is influential here in the city.” My father said in a serious tone I have never had

“Don’t worry, dad. He will not disappoint you.”

While we were eating, my phone rang, indicating several messages. I wanted to ignore it, but the subsequent ringing of the phone alarmed me.

I took out my phone and saw an unknown number had sent me messages on what Sapp. I did not waste a moment and opened it.

What I saw broke my heart once again….
