Chapter 3

Author: I. Winter
The lights in the livestream studio were harsher than any surgical lamp I'd ever worked under. Manager Sneed stood beside me, the corner of his mouth curled into a satisfied smile. On the phone screen in front of us, comments scrolled by in an endless stream.

[Rotten doctor, get out of medicine!]

[Won't even let ten dollars slide, people like this should lose their license!]

[Glad the hospital's dealing with him, good riddance!]

My heart went cold in an instant.

Sneed nudged me with his elbow, his voice low. "Your turn to talk, Dr. Cole. Make it sound sincere."

I lifted my head and looked into the camera. I took a deep breath, and when I spoke, my voice came out hoarse. "Regarding this incident, I admit my mistake. I failed the trust my patients placed in me, and I failed everything this hospital invested in training me."

The comments exploded.

[At least he knows it!]

[Admitting it now? Where was that honesty before?!]

[A doctor like this shouldn't be allowed near patients!]

I looked at the words scrolling past, my mouth twisting into something bitter. Then, slow and clear, word by word, I said, "I am announcing, here and now, that I, Doctor Nathan Cole, am formally resigning my position as attending surgeon in the surgery department of Lyntica General Hospital, effective today."

For a moment, the studio went dead silent. Then the mockery came back even harder.

[Good, now get lost already!]

[At least the hospital's clean again!]

Manager Sneed could no longer hide the smile spreading across his face. This was exactly the outcome he'd wanted.

The broadcast ended. I didn't look back. I walked straight out through the hospital's front doors.

That night, I had a dream. In it, countless hands were pointing at me, countless mouths were cursing me.

"Liar!"

"Butcher!"

I tried desperately to explain that the two bags of glucose had been to save a patient's life. No one listened. The voices grew louder and louder until I jolted awake. It was barely five in the morning.

My wife stirred beside me, woken by my thrashing. She switched on the bedside lamp and looked at me, worried. "Another nightmare?"

She'd seen the broadcast too. These past few days, she hadn't asked me a single question. She'd just quietly stayed by my side.

She took my cold hand in hers and said softly, "Nathan, let's just walk away from all this. As long as we can look ourselves in the mirror, that's worth more than anything. With your skill, you could make a living doing just about anything."

Hearing her comfort me, I couldn't hold it in anymore. I broke down and sobbed.

What had all these years even been for? All that lost sleep, all that killing myself at work, and it had bought me nothing but a ruined reputation and the whole internet spitting on my name?

But a week later, of all things, the director called me himself. I hesitated for a moment before picking up.

"Dr. Cole! My star surgeon!" His voice was almost gleeful. "You've had enough time off by now, haven't you? Come on back to work already!"

I thought I was hearing things.

"The hospital's already lifted your disciplinary action. I'm having accounting cut you your bonus right now—double, in fact!"

I let out a cold laugh. "Why?"

On the other end, the director froze, disbelief creeping into his voice.

"Why? Dr. Cole, have you... have you not been online at all this past week?"

Director Higgins's lips moved, but no words came out. For the first time, something like shame crossed his aging face.I understood. I'm no saint. When you've been wronged, betrayed, thrown out onto a public stage to take the fall, it hurts. It leaves you cold inside. A heart that's been burned raw doesn't just warm back up because someone finally says the right thing."Director Higgins." I walked to the door and pulled it open. "Please, see yourselves out. Lyntica General is a fine hospital, but it isn't the right place for me anymore. Sterling Union needs me. So do the patients who spoke up for me online. A doctor's hands belong on a scalpel, saving the people worth saving, not wrapped around a wineglass, smoothing over dirty office politics."Director Higgins looked at me for a long moment, then turned and shuffled out, shoulders bowed, looking utterly lost. As he passed Manager Sneed, he said only one thing."Tomorrow, you're going in front of the Ethics and Compliance Board to

"He's not lying."A calm, steady voice came from the doorway. All three of us turned at once. Marcus stood there, arms crossed, leaning against the frame. The arm I'd repaired was out of its cast now, moving freely. Behind him stood two grim-faced men in black suits."Mr... Mr. Callahan?" Director Higgins's eyes went wide the second he recognized who'd walked in.Manager Sneed froze too. He clearly hadn't expected the patient he'd been calling "unreasonable" to turn out to be Marcus Callahan, the property tycoon known across all of Rivermont.Marcus ignored them both and walked straight over to me, an easy grin on his face. "Dr. Cole, hope I'm not interrupting.""Not at all." I shook my head."Good." He nodded, then turned around, and the grin dropped off his face instantly."Director Higgins. Manager Sneed." He bit off each word, deliberate. "My family didn't know any better, I own that. I'll apologize for them, I'll cover whatever damages, I own that too. But there's one thing

For a long moment, neither of us spoke. Then Director Higgins broke the silence."Dr. Cole..." He took a step forward, an almost ingratiating smile on his face. "Could we... come in and talk?"I said nothing. I just stepped aside and let them through the doorway.Manager Sneed gave a cold snort and pushed his way in first. Director Higgins sighed and followed, casting a careful, appraising look around my home."Sit wherever," I said flatly, then turned to go pour them some water."Don't bother!" Manager Sneed slammed a hand down on the arm of the couch, his voice sharp. "Don't push your luck! The hospital has already lifted your disciplinary action, and your bonus has been paid out double. What more do you want? We've all seen the videos going around online. Just because your name's clean again, does that mean you get to forget who gave you the platform to shine in the first place?"I carried two glasses of water over to them. I set one down gently on the coffee table in front of

One after another, face after face appeared on the screen—some lined with age, some young, some worn down, some lit up with hope. They were all my former patients. Some of them, I couldn't even remember by name anymore. But every one of them remembered me.They told their stories in the plainest words they had. Not one accusation. Not one insult. Just line after line of "we believe in you" and "Dr. Cole is a good man."The video closed on a single line of text: [We believe a surgeon's hands are worth more trust than any rumor.]When it ended, I covered my face, my shoulders shaking. So I hadn't been alone after all. What I'd fought so hard to save hadn't just been lives, one after another. It had been real, honest hearts, still beating for me.That was enough. More than enough.Right then, my phone rang. I wiped my eyes, cleared my throat, and picked up."Hey, Ethan.""Dr. Cole! You... you finally picked up!" His voice was thick with tears. "Did you see the video? We all saw it!

The video seemed to have been filmed right in a hospital room. A burly, crew-cut man in his middle years sat with his left arm in a cast, suspended in a sling across his chest. It was Marcus, the patient I'd pulled back from the brink of death that day. His eyes were bloodshot, and he was roaring at a few people standing just off-camera."Get on your knees!"The camera jolted, and a middle-aged woman and two young people dropped straight to the floor with a thud. They were the same family who'd strutted around the Medical Affairs Office that day, throwing their weight around at my expense."You bunch of idiots! Have you lost your damn minds?" Marcus jabbed a finger at them, spit flying as he tore into them. "Dr. Cole pulled this arm of mine back from the grave, one cut, one stitch at a time! And you wanted to ruin the man who saved my life over ten dollars' worth of glucose solution? Did the dogs eat your conscience?"The middle-aged woman sobbed out a defense. "I... I didn't know

For the past week, I'd turned off every notification on every social app I had. I'd uninstalled the news apps too. I was afraid that seeing those vicious comments again would tear open a wound that had only just started to heal. But the director didn't sound like he was joking."What do you mean?" I asked."The patient's family posted a public apology to you online! The video's been trending for days! It's Marcus Callahan, the patient you saved, he's the one who went on camera to say it himself!"There was an excitement in the director's voice he couldn't quite contain, as if I were the one who'd gotten the better end of some incredible deal.I felt nothing. If anything, it struck me as almost funny."Oh," I said flatly. On the other end, the director's breath caught. He'd probably imagined every possible reaction from me—fury, elation, disbelief. But certainly not a weightless, throwaway "oh.""Dr. Cole! What kind of attitude is that? The misunderstanding's been cleared up, th
