Damien stood at the hospital corridor pacing endlessly. The long hall was stretched in front of him. There were white walls, bright lights and silence that felt too loud. He was. He was just walking without direction nor destination. His mind was troubled. Standing still felt like suffocation.

‘I don't want to die. I am scared of losing this child. Her words echoed in his head and he's losing it. This wasn't something he could fix and that terrified him.

For years he had controlled everything,

Sophia had already thought to herself that she wouldn't stay long. This was what was in her mind, that they would just look around for a brief minute, talk briefly and then Damien would drive her back to her father's house before the emotions of being here became too overwhelming. It looked simple, safe, temporary but somehow neither of them moved toward the door. The silence inside the mansion had changed and it no longer felt cold, it felt like something familiar like a place waiting to become something again.“Come with me”. Damien said as he stepped away first.Sophia looked at him carefully.“To where”? She asked softly.“You will see”.Normally, she would have refused immediately but today she is just curious. She followed him upstairs quietly, each step pulling memories from places she had tried hard to bury, the loneliness, tears, late nights, constant abuse, argument but also soft mornings, quiet moments that once meant everything and laughter. They reached the second hallway.

  • only one wins his heart    The Place They Lost

As she walked through those doors as a bride, crying alone in those hallways, waiting for Damien at night, begging him to choose her, packing her things after the divorce, the pain obviously lived here .“You okay”?. Damien asked softly because he noticed he was quiet and her mood changed as he watched her carefully.“No. But am I trying”. She answered honestly, drawing the fresh in and out slowly. That answer struck him harder. They both walked towards the entrance slowly, they weren't touching, they were just there. Then the front door opened, as Sophia stepped inside for the first time in months, silence greeted her.The house felt….. emptier, not physically empty but emotionally, like warmth had left it a long time ago.She moved her eyes slowly across the room, the staircase, the marble floors, the large windows; it was as if they were ghosts everywhere.“I hate this place after you left”. Damien said, his voice was quiet. He was standing behind her.“You didn't seem to”.She th

  • only one wins his heart    The First Step forward

Outside the room, Sophia walked slower than usual, still holding the pictures carefully in her hands like they were glass. She stopped near the hallway window halfway. The sunlight shone softly across the images, tiny blurred photography of a little life growing inside her.“It's weird”. She whispered.Damien stood beside her quietly.“What is it”?.“I spent so long thinking my body only knows how to lose things”.His chest felt heavy immediately.“Sophia….”.“But this ….feels like maybe my body is finally trying to give something back”.Her fingers trembled against the photos as she held it far softly. There was heavy silence between them.Damien looked at her carefully.“You were never broken”. A little bitter smile touched her lips.“That's not what it felt like” .He stepped closer slowly.“Then everyone who made you feel that way was wrong”.Her eyes shifted to his and there was a brief pause between them because he included himself in that statement and they both knew it.“I

  • only one wins his heart    The Ultrasound

The hospital waiting room was quieter than Sophia could remember or maybe it is because she was alone now or she had found peace. She curled her fingers nervously around the sleeve of her sweater as she sat beside Damien awaiting their turn in the reception area, they were absent minded staring at the television mounted on the wall without really watching it.Around them, people moved normally, talking, laughing softly, they were existing without fear. Sophia is jealous of that. You're thinking too much again”. Damien said, his voice bringing her back gently from her own thoughts. She looked at him briefly.“I am pregnant, apparently overthinking is part of the experience…it is normal to think”. She said, smiling faintly.“Pretty sure that's just your personality…I understand”. She would have rolled her eyes if anxiety wasn't clawing at her chest.Today was important, very important. It's a day for another scan, another check up, another chance to hear whether everything was still ok

  • only one wins his heart    The Distance Between Them

Sophia woke up the next morning nit from pain, nit from panic but from warmth. Fir a few seconds, she stayed still, eyes half closed half sleep. The morning light spilled through the curtain. The rain from the night before was gone and everything felt calm. Then she realized she wasn't alone. Damien had slept right beside her bed, he was still sitting on the chair he had dragged close sometime during the night. He rested one arm across the mattress near her, his hand tilted slightly awkwardly against the edge of the bed like he had refused to leave even after she fell asleep.Soptstared at him quietly. She felt something painful in her chest, something softer and more dangerous because this man, the same man who once broke her, shattered her had stayed through her worst nightmare without asking for anything in return and she didn't know what to do with that. Her gaze moved across his face slowly, his sharp jawline, his lips, his eyes, the faint exhaustion beneath those eyes, his brows

  • only one wins his heart    The Night She Broke

“But …..I don't want you to feel like you're standing outside my life anymore”.“........what dies that mean?”.“It means……you can come by whenever you want and I won't stop you. And you don't have to ask”.“....... Are you sure”?.Damien expression shifted not dramatic but real.“I am not letting you back completely”.“I understand”.“But I am not shutting you out either”.“That's is more than I expected”.“I don't get used to it”. She smiled.“I won't”.They stood there for a moment then without thinking, Sophia hand brushing lightly against his. Damien didn't react nor move closer he left it happens on her terms. Sophia noticed and this time she didn't move her hand away immediately. For the first time in a long while, Sophia smiled. She laughed not loudly, nit too long but genuinely. It happened over small things when Damien had burned the tea so badly.“You forgot to add water?” She asked, staring at the ruined pot.“I did not. I sure added water”.“You literally boiled leaves”. S
