Chapter 13: Breaking Point

The rotting stench of dried blood and stale sweat hit my nose a fraction of a second before the creature's teeth snapped shut in the empty air, missing Derrick's nose by less than an inch.

"Get back!" I screamed.

I scrambled backward across the concrete, my hand slamming against the tool chest until my fingers wrapped around a heavy iron tire iron. The infected runner thrashed wildly, its upper body squeezed halfway beneath the heavy steel loading shutter. Its milky, bloodshot eyes rolled violently in its skull as it tried to drag its ruined body forward, clawing the rough floor with black-nailed fingers.

Derrick was trapped flat on his stomach, his right arm pinned beneath the massive iron gear assembly. His face was pressed against the dusty concrete, sweat pouring down his forehead, but he wasn't screaming. He was gritting his teeth so hard a thin line of crimson leaked from the corner of his lip.

"Evelyn... the jack," Derrick choked out, his voice strained and breathless as he stared at the snapping jaws just inches from his face. "Under the workbench... use the hydraulic jack..."

I didn't hesitate. I dropped the tire iron, dove across the floor, and yanked the heavy hydraulic car jack out from beneath the metal table. Dragging it back across the concrete, I jammed the base of the jack right beneath the bottom edge of the stuck shutter, right next to Derrick's trapped arm.

I pumped the handle with everything I had.

Hiss—clank. Hiss—clank.

The heavy steel frame inched upward by two agonizing inches. It wasn't much, but it was enough.

Derrick yanked his arm free with a sharp gasp of pain, rolling backward onto his shoulder just as the infected runner lunged forward again.

I grabbed the heavy tire iron with both hands, raised it high above my head, and brought it down with all my weight directly onto the creature's skull.

CRACK.

The iron rod crushed bone and cartilage with a sickening crunch. The runner's body went instantly limp, its jaws snapping shut one last time before sliding sideways into a pool of dark, sluggish blood.

Silence crashed back into the warehouse, save for the heavy, deafening hum of the backup diesel generator overhead and Maya’s terrified weeping from the corner.

I dropped the bloody tire iron, my arms shaking so badly I could barely keep my balance. I leaned back against a stack of supply crates, gasping for oxygen, my chest burning from the sheer adrenaline crash.

A few feet away, Derrick was sitting on the floor, clutching his right forearm. His work shirt was torn, and a deep, purple bruise was already swelling across his skin where the heavy gear had caught him. He looked down at his arm, then up at the dead monster lying in a heap on the floor, and finally over at Maya, who was trembling violently on her cot.

He didn't say a word. The arrogance, the biting sarcasm, the bitter fury that had defined him for years—it was all gone, stripped away by the raw, brutal reality of the blood on the floor.

"Is your arm broken?" I asked quietly, pushing myself up off the crates and walking over to him.

Derrick flinched as I knelt down beside him. He pulled his arm back instinctively, his jaw tight. "It's just bruised," he muttered, his voice rough and stripped of its usual defensive edge. "I'll live."

"Let me see it," I ordered, my tone leaving no room for argument.

I reached out and gently rolled back his torn sleeve. The skin was bruised a deep, ugly black-and-blue, but the bone was intact. I pulled a roll of medical wrap and a cold compress out of the first-aid kit I still had in my hand, pressing the cold pack firmly against his forearm.

Derrick hissed through his teeth at the sudden chill, but he didn't push me away. He sat there in the dim, flickering light of the backup generator, letting me bandage his arm.

"You saved me back there," Derrick said after a long, heavy silence. He didn't look at me; his eyes were fixed on the floor between his boots. "Again."

"I told you," I said softly, securing the medical tape with a sharp snap. "You're staying on this block. And I need you alive if we're going to hold this building together."

Derrick let out a low, humorless chuckle—a broken sound that held no joy. He finally raised his head, looking straight into my eyes. The hatred wasn't entirely gone, but it was buried beneath a crushing weight of realization. He knew I hadn't lied to him. He knew the world outside was gone.

"What do we do about the door?" Derrick asked, nodding toward the half-open cargo shutter where the dead runner lay.

"We weld it shut from the inside," I stood up, grabbing my flashlight. "And then we move your shop equipment, your tools, and every last bag of food from your garage into this warehouse. We are sealing this entire building into a single fortress. Starting right now."

Derrick looked over at his little sister, who had finally quieted down, her eyes closed in exhaustion on the cot. He took a deep, shaky breath, stood up on unsteady legs, and picked up his heavy breaker bar.

"Let's get to work," he said quietly.

Upstairs in the control room, my phone buzzed against the desk. I walked over and picked it up. The encrypted message from earlier—the photo of my northern valley bunker gate—was still glowing on the screen.

Julian hadn't just run away. He was watching. And he was waiting for the right moment to strike.

Chapter 20: Safe PassageI watched Elena clutch Lily closer as the little girl stirred in her sleep. The woman looked exhausted, and despite the tension between us, I knew she couldn't keep hiding in the bunker forever."You and Lily need to leave," I said.Elena stared at me. "You told me to stay away from your workshop. Now you're telling me to leave the bunker?""Because this place is about to become a battleground." I kept my voice low. "I can't promise I'll be able to protect you both when things get worse."She hesitated, clearly unsure whether to trust me.I understood her hesitation. I'd threatened to throw her out only hours earlier. But keeping her and Lily here while Derrick and I prepared to break through the blockade would put them in danger. I couldn't afford to let that happen.I opened the emergency exit and glanced toward the alley. The floodlights were still blazing across the compound, washing the surrounding walls in harsh white light. I couldn't tell whether the s

Chapter 19: Sparks and Silent EyesThe smell of hot oil, rusted iron, and burning rubber filled the dark back bay.Derrick had positioned his heavy diesel shop truck right over the central maintenance pit. Blue welding sparks exploded into the darkness as he worked on the front bumper, his thick leather apron covered in black grease.I stood near the open hood, holding a heavy flashlight on his work. We had already bolted a massive steel snowplow blade across the front grille to smash through street barricades. Next came the windows."We need reinforced steel mesh over the windshield," I said, keeping my voice low over the hum of the portable battery pack. "It needs to offer some protection against bullets from Julian's men while still giving you enough vision to steer through a horde. We'll use steel plates with narrow viewing slits for the side windows."Derrick lifted his welding mask, wiping a line of sweat from his forehead with the back of his gloved hand."I've got three sheets

Their beams pointed directly at the top floor of the parking garage. On the thermal monitor, I saw the orange shape of the sniper move suddenly. The bright lights were shining directly into his night-vision scope. He couldn't see properly anymore. He raised his arms to protect his eyes, moved away from his rifle, and hid behind a concrete wall to escape the bright light."Now you know I'm watching you, you bastard," I muttered. The sniper now knew that I had discovered him. He could no longer use his night-vision equipment properly because of the bright lights.I pressed the intercom button to speak to the room downstairs."Derrick, move away from the gate and come to

Chapter 17: Glare in the ScopeElena sat on a blanket in the corner of the staging room, holding her daughter close. Derrick brought them two bottles of water and a couple of protein bars. His face looked much calmer now that he knew the little girl wasn't bitten."They'll be safe here for the night," Derrick said, walking over to me by the stairs. His voice was quiet, the anger from earlier gone. "Maya's fever dropped a bit. Thank you... for letting them in.""They stay in the staging room, Derrick," I said firmly, keeping my voice down. "The main food storage stays locked. We don't know these people, and our supplies won't last if we keep feeding extra mouths."Derrick looked like he wanted to argue, but he was too exhausted. He just nodded once and rubbed his bruised arm. "I'll watch the door down here. You go check the cameras."I walked up the metal stairs to the second-floor control room. The heavy steel door locked behind me with a solid click.I sat down at the console a

Chapter 16: Cold Steel and White KnucklesThe silence inside the tiny security cage was suffocating, broken only by the mother’s frantic, ragged breathing and the low, wet thudding of infected bodies beating against the outer iron mesh behind them.Derrick stepped closer to the child, his chest heavy, his boots clicking softly on the cold concrete. "Evelyn... look at her leg.""Don't touch her!" the mother shrieked, instantly scrambling backward and shielding the little girl with her own body. Her eyes were wide, bloodshot, and wild with pure, maternal desperation. "She’s not bitten! She fell on the pavement when we were running! I swear to God, she just scraped her ankle!""Step back, ma'am," I said through the inner viewing slot, my voice cold, calm, and utterly unyielding. I grabbed a pair of heavy leather gloves and a short steel inspection rod from the wall rack. "If it's just a scrape, you have nothing to fear. But if teeth touched that skin, neither of you enters my buildin

Chapter 15: The CompromiseFor three excruciating seconds, neither of us moved.Derrick’s hand remained glued to the iron latch, his knuckles white, his chest rising and falling in deep, furious breaths. My taser stayed leveled directly at his chest, the faint blue hum of the prongs the only sound in the dark entryway besides the frantic pounding outside."Shoot me, then," Derrick growled, his jaw locked in a rigid line. "Go on, Evelyn. Prove to me that you're no better than the monsters ripping through the street.""I am keeping your sister alive," I said, my voice dangerously steady. "Look at the monitor, Derrick. Look at the man on the left!"Derrick flicked his eyes to the security screen mounted beside the door frame.Through the grainy infrared camera, the man clutching his shoulder was trembling violently. He wasn't just bleeding—his skin was slick with cold sweat, his veins bulging black against his neck. He was turning. In less than two minutes, his central nervous syst
