I plopped down on a bench outside the high school cafeteria taking in my surroundings for one of the last times. To me, Las Cruces was dry and dusty, it sat right on the edge of the Chihuahuan dessert, it’s only saving grace are the mountains. Ch. 2

As the last bell of the day rung I walked quickly to my car, it was already 2:15pm. My father had sent me a text message telling me that even though tonight was the party, I was still expected to train from 3-5pm. I shuddered, I hated training, hopefully he will go easy on me today because of the fact that I’ll have to look perfect tonight, it would be an embarrassment to him otherwise. Ch. 3

I pulled up to our house a few minutes later, house, if you could even call it that. It had 12 rooms and 7 bathrooms, its own gym, its own theatre. Most nights after my father was asleep, I’d sneak out to my car to sleep, it’s the only thing that’s mine and that feels safe. I turned off the ignition and decided to wait outside for Cami. “Will you stop fidgeting please? The two seconds it took for Bennett to complete his shift stretched on for what felt like an eternity, I could hear his bones cracking and could see them distorting over his skin at awkward angles.
