Chapter 20
It was well into the evening before the last of the supernatural leaders arrived and a meeting could be held.  They unanimously agreed to remain in the shadows until absolutely necessary and wait for Bartholomew to make the first move.  It was hoped by all that something would occur -either by magic or just a change in events- to sway the army from the path it was on and dissipate the threat of their world.Upon closing the meeting, the attendees went off into various directions to form small social groups.  It was at this time that Belle took on human form and asked me to take a short walk with her.  Overwhelming curiosity, mixed with the desire to stretch my legs, prompted me to readily agree.“You do not remember me, do you?” Belle said in a soft voice meant for my ears only.“Did you visit me at my grandparent’s home?” I asked with uncertainty. “No, silly,” she giggled.  “I

Chapter 21
I sipped the tea Gwendoline practically forced on me to help calm my nerves while I pondered the information I’d just pried from her unwilling lips.  It was not only difficult to believe, but it was devastating to hear.I was hurt to discover those I loved lied to me. Gwendoline said it wasn’t her story to tell, which was why she hadn’t said anything.  I could relate, since I was holding on to a secret about Geo and Luthias being true brothers from her womb -instead of cousins who were raised like brothers- because it wasn’t my secret to tell.  Even so, there were plenty owning the secret who could have told me.Yet, they didn’t.Belle confirmed what they all suspected.  I was Shona reincarnated.  Worse than that.  I was Shona’s doppelganger.  Shona was a fey who married Geo, but only after she’d been with Luthias for some time. It was thought Luthias and Shona would marry,

Chapter 22
The remaining part of our trek to the subterranean mutant-vampire kingdom was long, tedious, and grueling. By the time we settled into the meeting room of Sybil’s grand house, my mood was anything but good.  Making such a difficult trip as a pregnant vampire was enough to justify my attitude without compounding it with constant concerns of encountering Bartholomew’s men or mutants; as well as thoughts of where I fit in the love triangle of Shona, Geo, and Luthias milling through my mind.Word from Geo didn’t reach us before we were ready to leave Nikodem’s place, so Luthias and Jason decided to leave Gwendoline in the company of the faes.  We didn’t want her returning to Verso, since it would be a longer trek to the subterranean kingdom should I need her, but we also didn’t want her being unnecessarily exposed to the potential dangers while journeying there.  I would have stayed behind with her, had I been given the opportuni

Chapter 23
“We need to finish our talk,” I said as I nestled my naked body next to Geo beneath the bed linens.“I thought we covered the important points,” he said.“I need more clarity on the love triangle between Shona, you, and Luthias,” I said.“You have quite a curiosity,” he mused. “I’m not sure I can satisfy it.  I can’t speak for Luthias and why he loved Shona.  I can only speak for me.”“All this talk about magic and doppelgangers makes me wonder if I inherited the spell Mari put on Shona,” I said.  “I can’t help wonder if that’s why I can’t choose between you and Luthias.”“You’re still unsure?” he said disappointedly, as he propped himself on his elbow to better look at me.“It’s more complicated than you might think,” I said, reluctantly.“That’s my line,&rdqu

I was both surprised and pleased at how quickly Gwendoline appeared at my bedside.  It was impossible to travel from Nikodem’s place so quickly. Had she followed us without our knowledge?“I used teleportation,” she said once she’d completed her own examination on me.“We could have teleported here?” I exclaimed as I recalled the horrific journey I’d endured.“There were too many of ye to teleport,” she explained.  “’Tis best to stick to one or two; maybe three. Belle and I were the only ones to come.”“Belle is here?” I squealed with joy.“She will be in to check on ye shortly,” Gwendoline said with a smile.“I really like her,” I mused.“Ye always did,” Gwendoline said.“You think I’m Shona too?” I pouted. “I feel displaced.”“Ye are Casey.  Don&rsquo

I can’t decide if it was a good thing or a bad thing to have Belle in the room at such a time.  She was an old fey of fairy lineage who possessed absolutely no filter when it came to speaking her mind.“Finally… the truth comes out!” Belle exclaimed with pleasure.“Hush!” Gwendoline snapped.“What is going on mother?” Geo asked. I’d never heard him call Gwendoline mother when he addressed her.  I later learned he reverted to using the term only when he was under some type of duress or was feeling emotional.“Something’s wrong,” Gwendoline gasped as she looked at Geo and Luthias.  “What’s happening?”“We captured a few of Bartholomew’s scouts near the tunnel surface,” Luthias said, anxiously.“Do you think they reported it?” I asked.“We aren’t sure,” Luthias said as he s

It took Belle several nerve-wracking hours to return with information. We were officially at war.  The news that Bartholomew’s men were in the tunnels came during Gwendoline, Geo, and Luthias’s little pow wow.  Apparently, the sitting room had several secret doors of which Julia was well acquainted.  She rushed in and delivered the news to him herself.  Geo sent her off to assemble their army and then rushed out to see me to safety. The eminent threat to the kingdom was why he was so preoccupied and unwilling to stay and argue with me about my going to my room.  I shook my head.  Dear Geo had a lot to learn about bedside manner.  He would do well to take a few lessons from Luthias.  I wondered if it was just his centuries of womanizing that gave Luthias such charismatic people skills or if it was something inherent within him. If it was the latter, then poor Geo was cheated.  I loved him dearly, but his ser

“You made your decision,” Luthias said as he swept me into his arms and whirled around the room.“I suppose I did,” I said, hesitantly, as I clung to him for fear of centrifugal force ripping me out into space. I don’t know what got into me to respond to Pierre’s angst about Gwendoline’s referral to Luthias as Lord Luthias the way I did.  He truly should be called Lord Luthias in Verso Land, so Gwendoline using that title made sense.  In my heart, I still hadn’t made up my mind who to choose, but my mouth chose even if my mind couldn’t.When we finally stopped spinning, the joy Luthias felt overtook all else and he kissed me with a fervor; mindless of the fact that Gwendoline was still in the room.“That’s enough, my boy,” Gwendoline said. “Ye do not want to over excite the lass.  We both know the line I fed them was untrue.  The baby is still at risk o

Luthias stayed with me in my rooms until Gwendoline returned the following day. She brought with her very sad news.  Not only had she not been able to locate -or even sense- Geo while scrying, but she’d heard word that Barthomew’s army was a three-day march away from Vampire Land.  A battle was inevitable.Luthias called for an assembly of warriors and we met them in the great hall. Although I knew I needed to address them, I was finding it difficult to think.  News of Geo’s complete disappearance and concern for his life was all I could think of.  It took some heavy duty lecturing on Gwendoline’s part to snap me out of panic mode.Although she was worried about Geo, she was equally concerned about Luthias.  She took me aside and quietly informed me that I’d only stated my plans to wed Luthias before her, Luthias, and Pierre.  Therefore, although it would probably rip Luthias’s heart out, I still had tim

Chapter 29
Our volunteers were successful in confiscating one of the notorious weapons from Bartholomew’s army.  They’d kidnapped a few of the guards and managed to get them to confess that the army was still uncertain as to the location of Vampire Land.  It was true they were a few days away, but they’d chosen a direction to search that would lead them further from us. The volunteers took it upon themselves to leave clues that would encourage the army scouts to believe the path they chose was the correct one.The kingdom was encouraged. After sending the weapon off to be analyzed by members of Vampire Land’s scientific and military communities, Lord Basha suggested we move forward with the wedding plans.  He felt strongly that the distraction of such a happy event was just what the kingdom needed to ease the stress of waiting for an attack that may or may not come.Luthias was understandably eager to wed.  It took me a lit
