ONE

The time was 9:00am on Saturday. Dave Walters had been in bed all night, wide awake with hurtful emotions as he tried to navigate his mind around his crush and bestie, Julie, who he summoned the courage to ask out the previous night. TWO

The atmosphere in Liverpool on Monday morning was 12 degrees Celsius. It looked like it was going to rain. Dave’s first lecture for the day, Spanish Language, was slated for 10:00am. He was beginning to get worried that his lecture would get disrupted, yet he was a bit glad it would deny him the opportunity of meeting with his ‘ex’. As to him, Julie’s refusal meant they had broken up. After taking his bath, he quickly dressed and moved outside to have a view of the sky above. He was feeling nervous, yet he never wanted to skip lectures. The first time he did so in his first year during a rainy day, the lecturer ended up giving an impromptu test, which later earned him a ‘C’ in the course.As he stood observing, the atmosphere suddenly turned grey with the pregnant clouds forming large curls as though they would fall off in heavy downpours. It was barely five minutes after 10:00am before Dave stepped into the lecture hall. He felt all his mates’ eyes on him as the attention given to the lecturer was now deviated to him.Walking briskly up the slope of the hall, he took the back seat, and when he had resumed full consciousness, his eyes met Julie’s. She occupied the space by his left side. Dave tried opening his lips to say ‘hi’, but his mouth only gaped and still closed back. He thought about all Lindsey had told him a few minutes back about keeping to himself for a few weeks, but he lacked the guts. He was too addicted to Julie to do so. He said to himself: “Besides, laws are made to be broken.”“Hi!” Dave managed to say at last.Julie gave a deafening ear as she pretended to be listening keenly to the Spanish lecturer.Dave’s heartbeat now increased. He wished he had just kept his big mouth shut.

FOUR

A month had passed and Dave was getting used to the ritual of taking a different route whenever he and Julie were close to facing each other. It was May 8th 2019 and the University was embarking on a mid-semester break. The school’s football team had planned a friendly football fixture with Cobra, a football team of the Division 2 of the England Premier League. Dave was also a player in the school’s football team. He played the defensive midfield role and was very good at his position. He was unlucky as he sustained an injury on his calf muscle, which made him to leap while he walked.The match was played the following day after the break commenced. The kick-off time was 4:00pm. Julie woke up to the sound of her mum’s solemn voice saying: “I’ve brought you breakfast my Angel.” When Lucy, Julie’s mum, saw how her daughter’s head nestled in sleep in her pillow.How sweetly and snugly she had met her sleeping, she envied her. She had barely enjoyed a peaceful sleep since her husband’s betrayal. Looking at her still, she knew her daughter had the peace she lacked. Because only the contented in heart could sleep like that.Julie opened her mouth in a large yawn.“Good morning mum.” Julie’s words sounded unclear as a result of the yawn.Kissing her on the forehead, Lucy dropped Julie’s breakfast on the stool by her bedside.“You seem to be enjoying your mid-semester break?”“Sure, I’m.” Julie got down stretching her limbs as she subsequently put her hands in akimbo.

It was Sunday morning, the morning before resumption from the mid-semester break. Dave had already woken up early by 4:05am. He had barely slept throughout the night. He was beginning to wish that school wouldn’t resume the following day as his injured feet had not fully healed, and of course, he’d continue to see his old friend, Julie.Somehow, he couldn’t deny that seeing her troubled him much. But he needed to be a man like Lindsey always encouraged.Stretching on the mattress, he sat in a yoga position as though he was having a meditation. Using his right forefinger, he then cleared out the debris that clung onto his eyelids. Dave was still wide awake. The time was 5:00am. He ran a warm bath as his emotions were becoming to make him feel uncomfortable and hot at the same time.After taking his bath, he felt a lot better and was preparing to sleep, before he heard another knock on his door. It was half past six now in the evening on Thursday. The trees were standing still except for the bird songs that proved it still served a purpose.Julie and Nancy were seated at a distance not too far from where Tom was having his football training. Julie was putting on an orange tee-shirt that revealed her novel and a pair of jean trouser. She also had a jean jacket on, in case the weather becomes too cold for her. Nancy on the other hand was putting on a short ox-blood gown that revealed most of her cleavage. She was also putting on a jacket, though an ash cotton one, different from Julie’s. The night was still young when Julie reached home. On the veranda, she could observe the lights from the chandeliers that were visible through the curtains. At once, she knew her mum must be back from the boutique which she owned and managed.And so, holding the handle of the front door, she lightly pushed the door open to get in. The large beautifully well decorated square room which doubled as the living room didn’t make any sense to her. It was at times as this, the wealth she and her mum shared together looked worthless. She always use to think that with her natural beauty, perfect shape and the silver spoon she was given birth to with; the qualities were enough to excuse her from misfortunes, insults and embarrassments of all kinds.
