Chapter Eleven
The Time Traveler     I was staring at his profile photo on F******k when I heard a loud slam of the door from the living room. I quickly make it to the living room to check but I only see a closed door. Maybe it is nothing. I grab the door knob and slowly open the door. I step barefoot on the grass which covers the floor of the front yard. Chi-Chan runs with excitement when he sees me. He raises his two legs and tries to reach me. And then he bites my hand, but it does not hurt. ‘Hello Chi-chan,’ I said and embraced the dog. ‘Would you like to sleep with us tonight?’ I added. ‘Oh you like it.’ I run my left hand on Chi-Chan’s fur, and they are very soft to touch. He has white and black thick fur that covers his entire body. And his fur feels soft and smooth better than any stuffed toy. I walked closer to the huge tree planted near the gate. Below the tree there is a single swing where Mallory loves

I Saw You December 2019, less than an hour before my shift ends. I was occupied with washing the cutlery and dishes. Mostly during the afternoons and nights the coffee shop is jam packed with customers, which makes the sink overflow with dirty dishes. I gripped the wet sponge filled with bubbles from the liquid soap, and removed the stain from the white plates and cups. I firmly grabbed the numbers of wet silver spoons and forks, and positioned them on top of a white clean towel to dry. ‘Here, please wash these.’ said Jane behind me as she put the used cups and plates in the sink below the running water from the faucet. After I washed the dishes, I used another wet towel to scrub and clean the sink. ‘Who is assign for the inventory later tonight?’ Charlie asked while he is mopping the floor. ‘There are still plenty of paper cups inside the cabinet.’ he added.I wa

Brave I perceived a knife stabbed unswerving into my chest. The pointed tip of the knife landed through the skin of my heart. I am certain that very moment my heart does not wish to continue. Damn, my heart breaks. Oh man it is very painful. My heart is pounding very weak. It feels like my heart admits defeat and does not want to fight anymore. I couldn’t stop crying. And just when worse is not enough, my lungs are suddenly filled with water. I couldn’t breath. I feel like my head is underwater drowning helplessly. Is it too late now?  I put my right feet forward with tears filled my eyes. Can I go back? I take one step followed by the next. I don’t want to die. I walk faster until I come running. And while I ran I heard a song play, but I guess it should not bother me anymore now that I know I am dead.

The Rain  The rain made a very loud noise tonight. Heavy rain falls and hits hard on the roof of the houses and also on the ground. I listened to the sound of the rain and felt the heavy weight of the water streaming like it will never end. The rain constantly poured followed by a very strong sound of thunder which made Chi-Chan barked in panic. I saw Mallory quickly jumped on her mother’s lamp as soon as she heard the sound of the thunder. ‘Mama, I’m afraid.’ Mallory cried as she embraced her mother tightly in fear.  ‘Don’t be afraid, the thunder cannot enter the house.’ Her mother said. ‘Baby listen, our roof won’t break because of the thunder.’I wanted to tell them not to fear or worry, for they are just fine. From a distance I watched how they lived their lives. I looked at Irina as she comforted Mallory. I honestly admire her a

The Wake   11 PM, Mallory is already sleeping beside me on the bed. With a very pale light I look at her face, she looks so placid with her eyes closed. And she breathed with her mouth slightly opened. Her left hand is placed near her chin and her other hand is on top of a pillow. I stood up and turned off the moon light on top of the table near the bed. And then I lay again on the bed and I looked at the ceiling, even though the room was already dark and I couldn’t see anything, not even shadows. I let out a heavy sigh. Am I dreaming or just imagining things? Did I really travel through time? I thought it was impossible, and it only happens in movies and books. Movies and books, huh?  I instantly jumped out of the bed and rushed to the living room. I turned on the lights and began to scroll the bookshelf near the window. I found i

Slowly I entered through the open door of the house. And I am more surprised to find out it is the wake of a person, that is why there are people outside the house. I see a coffin in one side of the wall of the living room. And there are white flowers to both the right and left side of the coffin.  A little girl, maybe three or four year old, plays with her orange ball beside the coffin. She wears a white knee length dress without sleeves. She has a shoulder length light brown hair and fair skin. I watched her open a pack of M&M’s chocolate. She takes out a blue small rounded chocolate and puts it in her small pinkish mouth. As she chews she takes another one, red this time and tries to reach the coffin. ‘Wake up,’ she said. ‘Mama is crying again.’ The little girl stood up and climbed to a white mono-block chair, which made her possible to reach the coffin.  I watched how she repeatedly strike the top glass of the coffin

A Promise I Won’t Keep 6:00 PM, the sun is setting, soon it will be dark and Mallory will be home. Maybe I should clean the bedroom before she gets home. I slowly climbed the wooden stairs with my bare feet. ‘Come it’s almost 9 o'clock you should be sleeping, you still have school tomorrow.’ I said and took Mallory by hand as we climbed upstairs to the bedroom.‘My feet hurt, carry me Mama.’‘Okay here you go.’‘Strong Mama,’ she said. ‘I love you, Mama.’‘I love you too, baby.’ I open the door to the bedroom. There is a dark brown framed window at one corner where the light comes from. The yellow and orange light freely pushes through the open window. The yellow orange light hits the wooden floor.  I see Eric stand right there

The Rain  May 2021, Manila -  The Philippines reported its first two cases of the Indian Covid variant on Tuesday. The variant was identified in two overseas Filipino workers who returned from UAE and Oman, said the news anchor.  I turned off the television as there is really not much good news in the world today. Sadly the pandemic is not getting any better. And honestly I think it won't be better anytime soon. It appears to me like the pandemic is here to stay, for longer. Some people say the pandemic could last for three to five years or more. Sadly, people are already suffering, and suffering more because of the pandemic. Some people are losing jobs and livelihood and some are losing a family member or a loved one. While the pandemic is here to stay, we painfully learn to live and bend. I looked at the clock and it said 4:20 PM. I am prepa

I passed by one or two salons, they resumed operations but with very limited numbers of customers only are allowed inside the shop. Only 30% only capacity of the store is allowed, and you will see only one or two customers inside the salon. And to me it’s like a sad picture of an economy falling apart, although it’s one of the harsh reality of the pandemic. And yes I come across few people on the street all wearing face masks. Tuesday afternoon the town looks dead and very quiet.5:00 PM, I reached my destination, the exact pedestrian line where Eric was hit by a car. I stood at one safe corner of the road and waited for 20 minutes. A group of people crossed the pedestrian line as the traffic light turned to green. And you will not see a child or senior citizen among these group of people. Children and senior citizens are not allowed to go outdoor, since they are the most vulnerable ones, and most cases of death comes from senior citizens
