Beep! Beep! Beep! I groan into my pillow, blindly grabbing beneath it in search of my phone to quiet the blaring alarm waking me from my peaceful dreams. Bang! Bang! Bang! I wake up to a loud thumping on my front door. I crack open an eye, glancing at the clock: 7:30AM. Maybe if I ignore them, they'll go away. I think and cover my head with the pillow. Bang! Bang! Bang! "Mr. Romano!" A nasally voice calls. I groan, and tear out of bed ready to slam the door in the nose of whatever piece of shit thinks that it is okay to wake someone up at seven thirty on a Saturday. I storm across the living room tense, and practically tear open the door to find a scrawny man with blonde hair and a portfolio standing in front of me. I pull into the parking lot of my apartment with heavy eyes, tired from staring at a computer screen. My fingers are cramped from writing notes, and there's a crick in my neck that should be absent on a Saturday. But I finished my work in record time and that is what's important. Now it's time to tackle whatever Audrey and Dan have cooking in our apartment right now. I trudge up the stairs to our third-floor apartment, shove my key in the lock, and step into the mayhem. I study my reflection in the mirror: casual black suit pants and a white button-up, jacket hanging over my shoulder. It might be a little over the top for a downtown club, but this is for business after all. I slip on a gold watch that stands out in contrast against the black. I spritz on some light cologne and fix my cuffs. Nine o'clock. I should probably head out in a minute. I sigh at this bullshit of a test my father decided to give me, rubbing a hand down my face. I lock up and slip behind the wheel of my car. The club is about a fifteen-minute drive from my house, and I make the whole trip in silence contemplating what tonight might bring. I stumble my way back onto the dance floor where I left Audrey, Dan, and Mark to get a drink and cool off. I can't wrap my mind around what just happened. Who was that man? I wake up energized, minutes before my alarm is set to ring. I have a big interview with the CEO of a major corporation today. This interview is big; like potential promotion big. No one has ever managed a true interview with the head boss of Brinewick Corp. In truth, I have been burnt out with this job; a job that was what I thought I wanted, but turned out to be more tedious tasks and unsatisfying workloads. But this job, this interview, is a once-in-a-career opportunity that I am finally excited for. I get ready quickly, washing and curling and swiping on makeup. I give myself an assessing once-over at my reflection in the mirror.
