Chapter 41 –– Where Is She? Part 3

Daemon's Point of ViewTyler, Adam and I were travelling at top speed down the highway, hopefully towards Adriana. Kilometre after kilometre flitting past. Every second felt like a lifetime. None of us sought to make conversation, which I was thankful for.The road stretched endlessly ahead, but it wasn't fast enough. My fingers tightened around the wheel, knuckles turning white. Theo was restless, pacing in my mind, snarling at the delay. We were both extremely apprehensive about Adriana, and the pain in my mark irritated me and made me short-tempered. I would prefer not to snap at either Adam or Tyler."She's scared," Theo growled. "We should be there already!""I know!" I snapped back, barely stopping myself from slamming my foot harder on the accelerator. My mark ached like it was being burned into my skin all over again. It wasn't just the bond; we both knew something was wrong. The sick feeling in my gut worsened as we drew closer to the flashing lights ahead.Ahead of us, we cou

Chapter 42 –– What Hell Is This?

Adriana's Point of View Things were looking bleak. I had woken up in an unfamiliar place, with no idea where it was. A dull ache pulsed at the base of my skull, and my limbs felt like they had been weighed down with lead. My throat was raw and dry like I had been breathing in dust for hours. My fingers twitched against the cold, uneven floor, and when I tried to sit up, a sharp sting on my wrists made me suck in a breath. My skin burned where the silver cuffs bit into me. Clearly, I was inside, and it was a storage room, as evidenced by the old boxes stacked in the corner. However, it didn't seem to be used often, if at all. There was a musty, rancid smell. The kind that came from rotting produce that had been decaying for years. Many years. Panic curled in my stomach. This wasn’t just any kidnapping. Whoever had taken me knew exactly who I was. Possibly even things I didn’t know. In the room with me were five shifters. I could smell them. Four of them had been in the vehicle with

Chapter 43 –– Operation Find Adriana

Daemon's Point of View "What do you mean Alpha Brandon uses rogues?" I asked Tyler. "Alpha Brandon from the Red Devil Pack?" "It's just a rumour," he answered. "Though it is a popular rumour." “A rumour doesn’t make it fact,” Adam countered, arms crossed. “But too many whispers in the dark mean there’s some truth to it. We just need to figure out how much.” “And quickly,” I added, voice sharp. “If Brandon really has been working with rogues, then he’s been hiding in plain sight for years. That means he’s dangerous and smart.” "Why would he need to use rogues?" Adam asked. "Is there any way to find out the validity of the rumour?" "Sure," I answered. "Well, probably, but that is going to take time. Time we don't have. As for why he would need to use rogues, whatever he was doing, he would want to make sure it was off the Council of Alpha’s radar." I rubbed my neck to try to ease the painful throb from Adriana's mark there. That wasn't the only pain. For some reason, my wrists hur

Chapter 44 –– The Horrific Truth

Adriana's Point of View Alpha Brandon finally came back into the room. I don't know how long it had been since he left, but it seemed like hours. Even though there was no bed in the room, I managed to fall asleep lying on the wooden floor. I was starving and sore. My stomach twisted painfully, empty and cramping, but it was nothing compared to the searing burn at my neck. The mark, Daemon's mark, felt like it was being seared from my skin. It pulsed with every heartbeat, a cruel reminder of the bond I once thought unbreakable. A bond I now wished I could rip away myself. But worse than the hunger, worse than the pain, was the hollow void in my chest. A loneliness so suffocating it felt like drowning in shadows. The agonising throbbing in my neck was getting worse. To make matters worse, I had fallen in love with Daemon, and his betrayal left a void in my heart. "Here is some food," he sneered, dumping a tray on the floor next to me. "Enjoy it while you can." "And what do you mean

Chapter 45 –– Three Days Of Hell

Daemon's Point of ViewThe following two nights were hell. The nerve-wracking waiting for all the trackers to come back and report, hoping that at least one person had found Adriana. I knew it would take time for them to find her. A lot of preparation was needed to minimise the trackers' scent so they wouldn't endanger themselves. I totally understood this, but this was my mate and their Luna in trouble, and I was having difficulty reconciling priorities.I barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Adriana, scared, alone, hurt. My mate. My Luna. The woman I was supposed to protect.Theo paced restlessly inside me, snarling at the waiting, at the helplessness. He was on the verge of snapping, and I wasn't far behind. The only thing keeping me from losing it completely was the knowledge that if I lost control, I wouldn't be able to lead. And if I couldn't lead, I wouldn't be able to save her.Adam coordinated between the commanders, ready to put attack plans into action as soon as

Chapter 46 –– The Beginning Of The End Part 1

Adriana's Point of ViewIt had been two days since getting dragged off the bus. I was sure of it. At least Brandon is feeding me. I get two small meals daily, consisting of dry bread, some form of cooked meat, and stale-tasting water. I was undoubtedly used to tastier food, but it is better than nothing. Prisoners can't be choosers. I know the saying was, "Beggars can't be choosers", but I refuse to beg.I hated that I was grateful for the food, even if it was stale and tasteless. It meant he needed me alive. It meant I still had time. Time for what, though? A miracle? A last-minute escape? Or just enough time to make peace with the fact that I was going to die?No. Not like this. Not at his hands.I wasn't some broken girl waiting for rescue. If I were going down, I'd make damn sure I left my mark on that bastard before I did.My hands were still cuffed, causing welts. Despite this, I was not tied down in any other way, leaving me free to wander around the storage room. The air here w

Chapter 47 –– The Beginning Of The End Part 2

Daemon's Point of ViewWe were in position. It had been torturous creeping up on the old packhouse like that, but we had managed it without getting detected. I only hoped we would be there in time, although if we had seen Brandon and his henchmen act, we would no longer have bothered creeping. With the full moon out, it was bright, and with our shifter senses, it might as well have been daytime. So far, nothing had happened, but we still stayed in our positions, ready to attack. I took note of my surroundings in case there was someone else we hadn't accounted for.On one side stood the large packhouse. Some other smaller buildings surrounded the open flat area on the other two sides. We were hidden on the fourth side, where there was long grass and some trees. All the buildings were rundown, and it was clear they hadn't been occupied for the past 18 years. It wasn't long before something happened. We watched Alpha Brandon enter the storage shed with the unknown woman, and the door clos

Chapter 48 –– When You Think It's Over

Adriana's Point of View "We are coming to rescue you." What? Moments ago, I had wished that Daemon was here to help rescue me, but I wasn't expecting it. So when he mind-linked me, I was shocked. For starters, the wolfbane compound I'd been given had finally worn off enough that I could hear him. Maybe I could listen to and talk to my wolf, though she still wasn't responding. Secondly, it was astounding that he was still trying to mind-link to me. Why on Earth would Daemon say that he was going to rescue me? I just couldn't comprehend why he would want to contact me or know that I needed rescuing, let alone come and rescue me. "Why?" was the only thing I could think of asking him. "Adriana, you are my mate. Of course, I would come and rescue you." I guess being fated mates wasn't something he could easily throw away, even if he wanted to. How would his new Luna feel about this? Surely, it would have been better for them to let me go. Not that it mattered. There was no way I was g

Chapter 49 –– Her Life In His Hands

Daemon's Point of View In our wolf forms, Adam and I raced towards Adriana, Alpha Brandon and the witch. Adam reached the witch before I got to Brandon and leapt at her. I could see she was fast, probably due to magic, and had managed to dodge his first attack. I was sure he would be fine, though, and I left him to it so I could focus on Brandon and Adriana. As I got into combat range, Adriana stopped kicking and hitting Brandon and turned partially to face me. I could see she was puffed and needed to catch her breath. It was not surprising because, with her hands cuffed in what looked like silver, she appeared to find it hard to keep the attacking momentum going. Not to mention, she was probably in pain from the silver touching her. Brandon had been clutching his throat the whole time I was coming at him, something that Adriana had done to him. Seeing that she had stopped attacking and had turned away from him, he fumbled with something on his right side. Suddenly, he pulled out a

Chapter 50 –– It's Over

Daemon's Point of View"Bring Doc over. Adriana has been stabbed with a silver blade. She isn't healing," I mind-linked to Tyler."On our way!" he replied.Shit, shit, shit! There must have been something on the blade that was stopping her from healing. I held Adriana in my arms while trying to keep the wound closed. Adam came over, picked up the knife, and smelled it."Smells like wolfsbane," he said. "That'll be why Adriana can't heal. Her wolf will probably be dormant. Hopefully, it wasn't a large dose, but Doc will be able to tell."Fuck! Wolfsbane can be fatal to humans and wolves. If the dosage is large enough, it could kill not only her wolf but also her. If it is wolfsbane in her system, then there is no way she'll be able to use mind-link and shift into her wolf. Still, most importantly, she won't be able to heal as fast as was typical for shifters. She would only be able to recover like a fragile human.I clutched Adriana against me, my arms tightening instinctively as if I c
