Chapter 211: Rowen, Part 2
She punches me in the arm playfully. "Shut up. He's going to be beautiful."I'd settle for manly or handsome. Maybe has a great bend in his kick. But her assessment will work too.My dad walks back in the room, heading toward a tool box I didn't notice was on the floor. "That didn't take long.""The shelf didn't come with anchors for the wall. What kind of product that's supposed to hang doesn't come with the supplies to make it happen? Daoine dúr."Tiffany giggles at his bitching. "What did he say?" she whispers."He's dropping curses over whoever packed the box."She giggles again, this time covering her mouth with her hand. I don't get it, but she still thinks it's hilarious when he gets all riled up. We're still new enough in our relationship that we haven't had a bunch of time to get to know my parents as a couple, but I have a feeling holidays are going to be interesting when these two get on a roll.Da rats around for a few minutes longer until a huge clap of thunder makes him

Chapter 212: Tiffany, Part 1
"Would you get away from me?" I bat at Geni's hands, but she bats right back. She's driving me crazy, wanting to rub all over my belly today. "It's fucking annoying when you do that.""But I want to feel him move," she whines and moves in for the kill again. This time, I don't bother fighting her off. Whatever. If she wants to give me a belly massage, I'll let her. But if she even gets close enough when some pregnancy gas moves in, I'm not warning her in advance, nor am I holding it in. That'll teach her.Besides, waiting for my opportunity to crop dust her gives me the distraction I need. I love coming to games, but at thirty-weeks pregnant, it's not as fun anymore, even in the box, which I hate. But it's a better choice than in the stands these days. The chairs are uncomfortable; the noise is unbearable; and I've already thrown up once. We've only gotten through the first half so far. This is going to be a long game."Leave her alone, Geni." Quincy pushes her friend back into her se

Chapter 213: Tiffany, Part 2
Quincy turns to face me, pushing a stray hair behind her ear and sucking in a deep breath through her nose. I'm immediately on high alert. Somehow, I don't think I'm going to like what she's about to say."Is anyone throwing you a baby shower?"I groan and drop my head to the back of my seat. I change my mind. I prefer them whispering around me if it means not having this conversation."I'm going to take that as a no?" she says hopefully.Turning my head to look at her, I stay leaning back. I don't know if it's the massive amount of dairy I just consumed or the idea of being the center of attention at a party for a bunch of women who don't even like me, but my stomach begins to roll a bit. The only thing stopping me from giving a definitive no is the pleading look on her face. Dammit."Why do I have to have a baby shower? I can buy everything on my own."Not surprisingly, Geni rolls her eyes and Quincy snorts a laugh. "You would be surprised what kinds of crap you don't know you need u

Chapter 214: Rowen, Part 1
My wife is such a good sport. But I always knew that. She's supportive and funny and takes no shit. She recognizes when people are hurting and lets their angry words roll off her back. She doesn't offend easily and can whip out one-liners with the best of them. But the one thing she absolutely hates is being the center of attention. Most people can't tell because of her love of makeup and short shorts and how she walks with an air of confidence. But I see it. I know she'd rather be behind the scenes than front and center. That's how she ended up with the job she has. It's also how we ended up having a "couples" baby shower. Tiffany thought if all the husbands came, it would take some of the heat off her and we could share the limelight. Instead, my dad has commandeered the back porch and turned it into the men's area. Needless to say, my teammates have all gravitated toward him and his stories of "playing football the real way - when ye used to fall down for an actual injury and not

Chapter 215: Rowen, Part 2
I almost feel bad about leaving her to go be with the guys, but when I step outside, I quickly realize it's almost as bad out here as it is in there. No, there aren't decorations and ugly outfits, but apparently, my father has become the center of all conversation out here, and there's no telling what he's talking about."Hey, boyo!" my dad yells in greeting. "It's about time ye joined us. I'm regaling yer mates with stories of yer childhood."I groan, my hand reaching for a beer out of the cooler. My dad has plans to turn the porch into a fancy outdoor kitchen, but for now, we have to "rough it" with beer on ice instead of in a fridge."Did you really whip it out in the middle of a co-ed game to pee on the side of the field?" Christian asks, fist to his lips as he tries not to laugh."Hey, when you've gotta go, you've gotta go," Daniel retorts, making everyone burst out again.Rolling my eyes, I lean against the railing. "You guys really believe his stories? I was three, Da. It wasn't

Chapter 216: Tiffany, Part 1
"Holy shit!" Caleb exclaims, jumping out of his seat as he watches in disbelief. "Did you see that?"I should be excited. I should be jumping out of my office chair and cheering. Or at least wobbling out of my chair. A major league grand slam doesn't happen that often, and it came just when it looked like our beloved Astros were going to lose. That makes it even more exciting. For Caleb."I saw. That was cool.""Cool?" He furrows his brow. "Tiffany, they just tied up the game in the ninth.""I know, Caleb. I saw," I say grumpily and get back to my typing. I'm paying attention to the game; it's just easier for me to put in the major highlights of a story as they're happening, instead of hand writing it or trying to remember as I scroll through the video later.Caleb drops back into his chair, visibly frustrated by my bad mood. "Geez, you used to love this stuff. What's the matter with you?"My eyes snap up to his. "Besides being forty-plus weeks pregnant?"He looks at me like I've lost

"I take it by your silence you're starting to wonder the same thing.""Yeah. Yeah, I am. But how will I know for sure?"She laughs lightly, but I don't feel like it's at me. At least I hope not. "Early labor is really hard to detect. Once you're in hard labor, you will absolutely know. Somehow I don't think you're going to get off with an easy delivery.""Not with the way things have been going," I mutter."You have had a rough go of it," she agrees. "I think the other symptoms showing up today combined with the back pain may mean things are starting to happen.""God, I hope so," I huff out. "I don't know how much more I can take.""Oh honey, you're going to find out you can take so much more than you realize. Welcome to motherhood."I grunt my thanks, noncommittally, just before Caleb jumps up from his chair, cheering for a third strike out, moving this game right back into the grasp of his beloved team at the top of the tenth."Anyway, I can tell by the cheering that you're busy. I'l

Chapter 218: Rowen, Part 1
When my mam stopped by my place at dinnertime, I thought she was dropping off more food for my wife. I took the opportunity to show her the nursery that was finally complete. Tiffany eventually decided the elephant theme was kind of cute, which made it easier to pick out paint colors and furniture for our former office space. I think it turned out great.Light gray walls with a white crib and matching dresser, a few stuffed animals and cardboard books ready for when he's old enough to play with them, and a white wooden rocking chair with grey and white striped cushions. It's calm and soothing and ready for my son to grow up in.My mam agreed it turned out nicely. Then she told me to grab Tiffany's hospital bag because it was time to bring that son into the world.Needless to say, my first instinct was to race out the front door for my car. It wasn't until I actually got to said car that I realized I didn't have the hospital bag. Or the car keys. Or even shoes. At that point, it made se

Chapter 219: Rowen, Part 2
"Like all of my insides are trying to be ripped out of my body."Making quick work of washing her hands, the doctor grabs some rubber gloves. "Well let's see if we can't get an estimate on how much longer we have, shall we? Can you hop up on this bed for me?"Tiffany laughs humorlessly. "No. But I can do my best to climb up there.""Good enough for me."I help Tiffany get on the bed, taking a break when another contraction hits, and do my best to settle her. I'm exhausted from being up all night, but it's nothing compared to what she's going through. I understand why men in decades past stayed in the waiting rooms during this process. I feel so helpless.Tiffany tenses and grabs my hand when the doctor puts her hand between her legs to check on her progress. I watch the doctor's face closely, looking for any indication that we're almost done, but what I see isn't encouraging. She doesn't look how I imagine a doctor getting ready to deliver a baby would be. There's no sense of urgency.

Chapter 220: Rowen, Part 3
Another eight hours. Another one centimeter dilated. Almost. I may be rounding up out of my own feeling of desperation. This entire experience is not at all like I expected. Not that I knew what was supposed to happen. Sure, we'd taken a birthing class one Saturday, but that was months ago when our schedules allowed us both to be there. And it never told us what would happen if Tiffany's body refused to do what it should. At least Tiffany's sleeping now. About four hours after the Pitocin began, she started crying, saying she couldn't do it anymore. She'd been awake for almost twenty-four hours and had been in some form of labor for over half of it. Plus, once the drugs kicked in, her contractions went from being painful to downright excruciating. It didn't take much convincing for her to finally decide to have the epidural. But it did take my Mam physically moving me out of the way to help her through all her fears - fear of a needle in her spine, fear of the drugs hurting the baby,
