As soon as he stepped away and allowed me room, the room exhaled with me. Left standing there, wrist-bound and buzzing warm, it occurred to me quietly. Disruptively. I wasn’t waiting. I wasn’t trapped. I wasn’t being strong; I was strong because I chose to stay right where I was. That was new.
