Chapter 1
"I CAN'T DO it, Arthur." Laura sobbed. "I just can't. That is not the way of life I want to live. That is not the way of life I want to carve out for…" Arthur hushed her. He took a step to embrace her but she recoiled slightly. He clenched his fists beside him and looked around the room they were in. A guard stood at the door, and about 3 or 4 more were positioned outside. "Laurie, I can leave the family. I can leave all these behind if it would mean I have to stay with you." Arthur said, gently. "We would start all over. Together. From scratch." Even as the words left his mouth, his brain registered two things. One was, it was easier said than done. You can not just wake up one morning and decide to back out from the third biggest and deadliest mafia family in the New York underground. Especially when you're the first son of the godfather and the heir to the family. The second thing his brain registered was that Laura would not agree to it. She was scared. She shook her head. H

Chapter 2
A MONTH OR two HAS passed since Laura walked out on him and he had kept to the promise he made himself that day about not having anything to do with her. But her face constantly flitted across his mind and haunted his dreams. He missed her. Badly. Rain was drizzling lazily and the sun peeked out of the clouds at the same time - like the sky had not concluded which one to pick. Arthur drove his Lamborgini sports car across the street twice before mustering up the courage to step out of the car and enter the building. The lobby man was at his desk. Arthur walked up to the man. "Is Laura in?" He asked. The man looked stunned and lost for a second. "Um, No, sir. Ms McKenna is, um…" He stammered. Arthur waved him off. "I'll just wait for her in her apartment. I have a key." He walked up the stairs and headed straight for apartment 15 and tried the door. It was unlocked. He stepped into the apartment and had to cover his mouth to hold back his shock. The apartment was stripped. It w

ARTHUR DROVE LIKE a madman as he thought of the text that Diego had sent to him. He zoomed into the estate and drove directly to the mansion. No time for garage parking. He stepped out and felt a wave of nostalgia wash over him. This mansion does not hold fond memories for him and since old Papi had refused to sell it, he avoided coming here at all costs. It had happened 16 years ago, almost a month before Arthur’s eighth year old birthday. It was a bright day. But it had that sort of New York City weather where the sun and the rain had not decided on who will take the day. So the sun shone on and the rain fell in a lazy drizzle which floated aimlessly in the air. It was more like dew.Mrs Sofia Salvatore, Arthur’s mother was going out to do birthday shopping for little Arthur who had begged to go along but had been shunned.“Requesting to see your birthday gift before the day is only asking for bad luck, Chico.” She had said, softly. “You don’t want bad luck to follow me and you fore

Chapter 4
ARTHUR FELT LIKE the walls were closing in on him and started to get itchy and claustrophobic. He gently manoeuvred his way out of the circle as another round of champagne started flowing around again, nobody noticed when he left. He headed for the willow tree in the backyard, he used to come here after his mother died. He had not been here in years. He sighed and rubbed the ark of the tree fondly with his hand. "I am in a mess." He muttered to himself. He sighed again and sat on an exposed root. "Getting married into a Japanese family when I am still in love with another girl. Shit." He picked up a dry fallen leaf from the floor. "Talking to trees now, are we?" He turned to see his father allying towards him. After the accident with Arthur's mother, Fernando kept a close watchful eye on his son. Arthur scoffed and looked away. "What is the matter, son?" Fernando asked in that gentle voice he used to manipulate people to do his bidding. "What? Because I'm not jumping and drinki
