“She called in sick”
On the highest floor of Zenith inc were gathered well dressed business men referred to as ‘the board of directors’. As expected they were there to go through the current business insights and sales report of the company. It wasn’t a rare sight. It actually happened once every three months. The dormant partners were also tapped in for the meeting. They participated with telecommunication devices as they were mysterious and liked to keep their identities hidden. The meetings which were impromptu were emergency meetings, ones where the capabilities of the current employees and management were questioned. “Explain...”
“Alright, I’ll be with you shortly, sir. I’d like to get a few things,” he said. Stanford smiled, “We’ll take my car, I’ll be waiting.” He was too eager. Donovan began to think there was an ulterior motive. He canceled all his appointments for the day, then headed downstairs to the underground parking lot. Donovan stopped in his tracks. He wondered what had been so important for such a proud man to personally request his presence at home. He continued walking, spotting his grandfather’s new Maybach S680 was parked neatly. He approached the car and was greeted by Stanford’s personal bodyguard, who held the door open for him. Donovan slipped into the back seat where his grandfather sat. “Are you okay? What’s that look on your face about?” “I’m alright,” Donovan responded. He was thinking about Catherine, who was alone in his apartment, waiting to hear the good news about their victory. “Drive!” Stanford instructed the chauffeur. He obeyed immediately as the car engine turn

“Let the show begin”
“The sooner you understand that my attachment is not to this place but to you, the better,” she smiled fondly. “I like you, Donovan.” He was flushed. Was Catherine a day drinking? What was he going to say to her? She liked him? Donovan never knew the idea of love growing up. After his father left, everything turned sour. “I like you so much that I can’t help myself sometimes,” she said with a broad smile across her face. Her smile completely faded. “But how can I like someone I don’t know?” He stared at her intensely. What did she mean she didn’t know him? His heart sunk into his chest. “What do you mean?” he asked. “I know your name, your house, the names of all your family members, your company—” she paused, staring down with a wry smile pasted on her face. It was actually true. She knew nothing about him, and he knew a lot about her. Some things he found out on his own because of how open and honest she had been, others he found through Jerry. “Donovan, I don’t know you!” she sa

“Dony, are you okay?”
One week, two weeks and now three, the feeling of being watched plagued him. Donovan couldn’t tell whether his mind was playing tricks on him. The engine of his car purred as he made a way into the underground parking lot. He jumped out of his car almost immediately as his eye caught a not so distant shadow. It had now been happening too often. He would see faint shadows around and when he went in to see what it was, there would be nothing but emptiness and absolute silence. What was this new sinking feeling? He had always had confidence, but lately it seemed like everything was going to shit. Who could he trust? He scanned the area before jumping into the elevator. Donovan had been acting off for a while. He glanced out of the window after pulling up the blinds that covered the kitchen windows. He saw no one. Donovan shook his head as his thoughts were in complete disarray. He paced back and forth, glancing through the large space. “The whole street is empty. What is wrong wi

“Girlfriend?”
“Hello, am I on to Catherine Flora?” the voice spoke from the other end of the phone. She glanced at the caller ID once more, an unknown number. She didn’t get calls often, so anytime she did, she got a little tensed. Could it be mum or dad? Who wants to talk to me? Who wants to see me? Her heart would race in anticipation of something good, promising even. Was it just wishful thinking? “Yes, you are,” Catherine said hesitantly. Who was this strange female calling her? She couldn’t recognize the voice. It was definitely not her mother. “Here,” she hears the lady say, then some rustling follows before the phone is passed and she hears a familiar voice. What is happening? “Catherine, hello.” Catherine tries to decipher who the distressed voice belongs to. “Keila?” she takes a guess. But why would Keila be calling her? How did she get her number? She pauses to think, then remembers she gave it to her in the dressing room some weeks ago. “Yes, can you come pick me up?” her voice pul

“Relax, Ladybug”
When the door bell rang, Keila jumped a little, startled. Catherine sat still holding the girl with one hand and sticking the other in her mouth. She often bit her nails when she was nervous. After pressing the bell for a while, the person began to knock, hard. Catherine was scared. She didn’t think Keila’s accusation was completely baseless. She too had the feeling of being watched. For Keila it would be obvious that anyone who could get their hands on her would be generously compensated. She knew it too much, knowing the way Donovan loved his sister. As far her, she couldn’t see any reason someone would like to hold her hostage. Catherine was nobody in New York. Maybe her boss’s lover if that would count for anything. Ever lover was a strong word because Donovan never put a tag on them. A couple tense stares, violent shakes and a loud dial pad sound later, the door was open. By now Catherine and Keila were hiding in a corner, praying silently. “Catherine!” Relief washed over the

“Great, just great”
“He’s recovering but the man would be better off in his home,” the doctor patted his shoulder and walked in the other direction. Donovan contemplated carefully. Kenny sends him a look that spoke for itself. “I know what you’re thinking and no, I already have a lot on my plate as it stands.” “And that why we have Janet,” he said leaving Donovan to think about it for a second. They had run a man over, the least they could do was give him shelter for the mean time. “Stanford and Rachel don’t have to know. We can hide him in the guest house,” Kenny explained. Donovan brows were creased. His frown deepened. “Fine,” he said defeated. Kenny was making very solid points. The doctor walked back inside, “so the scan we ran finally came back,” he cleared his throat. Donovan knew it was nothing but trouble. “What Mr. Campbell?” “He has a concussion and internal bleeding. We’ve managed to do something about the internal bleeding but he won’t remember a lot of things for a while,” he explained

“See you soon Dony”
Catherine woke up very upset. She hadn’t gotten even a text from Donovan since he barged out with his sister. Even Keila hadn’t spoken to her since that day. She wondered what had happened. Even Kenny, Kenny of all people. He had ignored her texts and didn’t return any of her calls. She was tired of being understanding. Catherine packed all her things that were in the apartment . The only place we going to see her from now on was the office. She wasn’t even going to let him make up for what he did. “He loves me?” she scoffed. “Do you even know what it means to love someone Donovan Smith?” Catherine pulled her suitcase out aggressively. It got hooked into a loose nail and tore a part. She grunted then sat forcefully onto the floor, “why did I carry so much stuff?” she whined. Catherine buried her face into her tie. She began to sob, “stupid, stupid,” she face palmed herself. She had already told Rose and Teresa that she would be away for a while but she didn’t tell them how long. S
